I agree! I unmounted all of mine about 2 years ago and I am so glad I did. Now I can find stamps I need and they are not stashed in boxes in every closet in the house.

I have seen people doing this but I was not sure of what to put on the backs of the stamps. Some of my unmounted ones have easy mount (?) and some are just plain rubber. (Most of my stamps are SU)
Thanks for any help.

I mounted mine for cheap, I bought vinyl from J's for about $2.50 a yard (1 yard was more then enough for me) and if my SU set was not yet mounted on the wood I just stuck it onto the vinyl instead and then trimmed it down. If it was already wood mounted I stuck it in the microwave for about 8-10 seconds and peeled the foam and rubber off the block, and then applied tombow multi mono adhesive, let it dry, then stuck it to the vinyl.

It was so easy and cheaper then EZ-mount.
How do you do this? I have unmounted with EZmount but how does the vinyl work? Does it have static cling as well?
I agree...EZmount is not cheap, but love having my sets unmounted!

I love spending as much time as possible in my Color Studio
Hello! I would also like to know more about this! I have 100+ sets of SU stamps that I think I would love to unmount. I know you can place them in the microwave to help remove the backing. Once removed what is the next step? Then how is everyone storing them? I read a post or 2 before about this and know that ez mount is expensive. I cant imagine how much it would cost to do this to all the sets I have, not to mention he time involved. Any informaion would be greatly appreciated. I have 3 white wire shelves with all my sets now, gosh what space I would have left! What would I fill it up with !!! LOL
Here is my favorite reference thread on unmounting with links to photos and resources for CD cases etc
It took a long time for me to unmount my 100+ sets, but I love love love the ability to easily organize them and the tiny amount of space they now use! I had the space, but now I can find what I want much easier!
But there are ways other than EZMount that have big fans here on SCS. Do a search on unmounted and you will have a days worth of reading material! At least a day!
Hi Shannon! Thank-you for your advice. I will have to look into this more, as I would like to do this. I'm sure it will take awhile though. Should of thought about this earlier in the week as we are on mid-winter break here in Buffalo!! A few sets at a time, little by little!!
I got the idea from this blog http://www.stampsomefun.com, she does some extra steps and even puts the image on the back, I was in a rush in the beginning so I didn't do that but it really is easy, a few extra steps and a little messier then the EZ-mount, but I'll do anything to save some money.
EZ-mount, is just foam that has one side that is super sticky (to stick to the rubber) and another that is coated in vinyl. You might as well skip the EZ-mount way since most stamps already come with foam attached to the rubber, and save your money too since you can find vinyl in the upholstery section of your fabric store.
I dont know how the vinyl does it but it sticks to the acrylic blocks, the same way that the vinyl cling decorations for the holidays stick to your windows.
I bought all the supplies I needed from J's (including that to put the image on the back under the vinyl) and I only spent $15 (vinyl, tissue paper, stazon, and tombow mono multi adhesive), I have enough vinyl to cover all my stamps I buy from now until forever and $15 worth of EZ-mount would definitely not cover the amount of stamps I currently own.
Oooh, I'm so nervous to unmount mine. But the more I hear you ladies talk about how much you are loving it, the closer I get to taking the plunge!
I felt the same way, but now that I have started, I just want to keep going. It will be so nice to get them all in one place and organized. I had them stored in so many different places that I forgot what I had. So, go ahead and take the plunge. You will be glad you did.

Thank you sooooo much for this sight. It's going to save a bundle on EZ mount. Now I can unmount with vinyl! YEAH!!!!!
I would love to unmount mine as well BUT I do not have the time...or the patience!!! Also, I noticed when reselling on here umounted sets sell for a lot cheaper. I'm just wondering why that is if the stamps are the stamps regardless of how they're mounted?
When SU came out with the unmounted i took the plunge and did all of mine. Most were su anyway so i put in microwave and just removed from wood foam and all peeled the sticker off and put that on the sticky foam and cut around it to clean it up.brushed it with aleene's tack-it over and over let dry overnight and then put them in cd cases. 41/2 x4 1/2 paper stamped with the stamps i also cut a 1/4 x 4 1/2 for the side labels. there are good tutorials on youtube. I have limited space so this has opened up a whole new world and tons more space. oh yeah bought 10 blank cd cases at walmart for 3.98 and aleenes at michaels for $4
I have read the concern of resale value for stamps they unmounted.
IF you unmount your stamps and have more space, can enjoy your stamps more and use them more often because you can easily find them will a dollar or two less on the resale value be a good trade off? Furthermore who knows what the resale value of any stamps will be in the future.
We all remember people checking Beanie Babies with a magnifying glass and not putting them out to enjoy because they wanted to preserve resale value. And we all know how that worked out.
I use my stuff and make it work for me. If they have good resale value when I no longer need/ want them thats great and if not well I enjoyed them
The unmounted sets might sell for a better price now that it's becoming more common. There are so many people unmounting their SU sets, that it shouldn't be a problem selling unmounted sets going forward.

The resale value discussion reminds me of a tale told to me by an architech I know.
He was designing a home for his parents who were Seniors. His mother had a friend who was a Real Estate agent. Every time he turned around his mother wanted him to make this or that modification because her friend said they should have these features for " resale value"
Finally he said to his mother ," Find the people who will buy your house when you die and I will design a home to satisfy them"
His mother was surprised by his comment.
He said, " Mother if there is a house with the features YOU want, I guarantee you there is someone else who wants the exact same house and features! I want to design a home that has what you and Dad want and let the future resale value take care of it's self"
Just posted an idea on storing unmounted stamps on my blog. However, it may not be a system that works for you, but I am thrilled at how it meets my needs. TFL!

Oh my Gosh! I never dreamed that just plain old regular vinyl does this! I have been using TIOO over the stickers and have not been 100% happy - sometimes too sticky, sometimes not enough, older ones leave the sticker on the page when I try to peel off to use, etc... I am stopping at Joann's for some vinyl tonight and giving this a try!
I am wondering - if you have the stickers that came with the SU stamps, couldn't you just use those instead of using the tissue paper to index? Will the vinyl still stick well enough if you coat the sticker with tombow? Has anyone tried this?
Yes, it works! Tried it last night. The sticker doesnt stick to the block so used the tombow glue and put the vinyl from joanns on top and works great. I did find that the thicker 16 gauge has a stronger hold to the clear block then the 8. The 8 does work, but I prefer the 16. Also, for the stamps I dont have the stickers for or couldnt get them off the blocks, I made copies of the image on the wood block on regular copy paper and put that on the foam with the glue (the same way as the tissue paper). Works great, no ripping and it didnt smudge. It is easier to see w/the white background on the foam too. I made the copies on a regular copy machine w/toner, I didnt try it on my printer with inkjet. Goes much faster then stamping each stamp. I only have to stamp the ones that I bought bare unmounted.

you already answered the question I was going to post.... both my Joann's are out of the 8 vinyl, so was wondering whether the 4 or 12 would work. Sounds like I should go up rather than lower.
I just tried this and it works great!! I then needed to figure out a way to make them cling to my binder pages... I use the univenture binders. So I took a piece of vinyl and covered a piece of white chipboard from my dsp packs.. and punched holes in it.. and Voila! A vinyl binder page
Just make sure that when you buy vinyl, it sticks to itself when folded over. I bought something labeled as vinyl at Joanns, but it does not stick to the acrylic blocks. So glad I found that out before I unmounted more than 1 set! The lady at stampsomefun.com will send you a sample of what you need...information is on her blog.

I bought printable cling vinyl and printed up the stamp images on it (in reverse, since when you mount them they get flipped.) Then I just stuck the unmounted stamps onto it and presto! They look just the like SU ones without having to use messy glue.

I use Photoshop and choose the mirror image option. I know you can also use Microsoft Picture Manager and probably Word too ("edit" -> "rotate/flip" -> flip horizontally") The only reason I prefer Photoshop is because I can fit multiple images on a page all at once. I just ordered more supplies to do another batch of non-SU stamps and will post the tutorial on my blog when they get here in about 4-5 days.

Ok, at the risk of sounding stupid.... where did you buy the printable cling vinyl?

It doesn't sound stupid. It took me forever to find it! Papilio.com They have both ink jet and laser for $13.36 for 10 sheets. It sounds like a lot, but I justified it by buying multiple packs to qualify for free shipping, the fact that I don't have to buy any special glue and the time saver from the Stazon-tissue sheet tutorial I've seen. Plus, I can fit about 4-5 sets on a single sheet. Probably more, but I leave myself wiggle room around each image.
I was so excited when I read about using vinyl to unmount stamps so I went to JoAnn's and got the 8 gauge that was recommended. It didn't stick at all so like the other person said be very careful your buy the right kind. I was so disappointed so now I am thinking of just using the Aleenes tack it over.
