I have a bunch of dies. They are in the towers right now but since my scrapping area is a built in wet bar I am having some problem getting them to fit. Anyone have any idea on how to store them.
I store mine in a iris cart. All red in one drawer, yellow in one drawer, blue in one drawer and green in one drawer. I find it to be so much easier to find what you need. I had the towers but got rid of them because I had way to many sizzix dies over 200 of them and didnt have room for all them towers. Keep your towers because you can put your ink pads in them. I find this out after I had gooten rid of my towers.
An iris cart is the plastic drawers that have the wheels that you can put on if you want to or leave the wheels off if you want to stack them on top of each other. some of the iris carts have 2 big drawers on the bottom and 1 small one on top. You can find these at walmart, dollar stores or office supply stores. You can google iris cart to see what they look like.
I store some of mine in a plastic shoe box I got at Walmart for $1.74. They will hold about 10-15 of them. I have towers as well. They do take up a lot of room but, I am going to keep them. I took my alphabets out of them and put them in a photo box. Works for me.
I know you are talking about the red, yellow, green and blue thicker dies, but I just wanted to pop in and let you know that the thin sizzlit dies will slip into those clear sheets that hold baseball cards, and then into a 3 ring binder.
I purchased some stackable shelves from OSH. I have stacked them before, but was nervous about the kids coming into my craft room even though I have it closed. I just place them side by side. I like them because the dies fit perfectly from end to end.

And I thought I had ALOT of dies!!!LOL We are in the process of making my craft room and my husband built skinny shelves made to fit the dies. When we are done I will take pictures of the room and post them on my blog.
I have some Napa Valley (wooden) 8 track tape holders... and they fit into the slots. ( have the same thing (smaller slots) for cassette tapes holding ink pads.
I don't have very many of them anymore i sold off the bulk of them over the years but, the only thing is the wider SU topnote type dies do not fit into the slot, so only the old red, yellow or the newer black ones do.
I have sold off or given away a bunch of my dies in the last year as I just don't use them anymore. However, when I had them I used a tall CD rack that spun (had 2 sides to it.) My husband built a sturdy pedastal for it it I didn't have to sit on the ground to see the ones on the bottom, it spun so I had easy access, and it was 5 shelves high (by shelves I mean the height of a CD case.) The red fit perfectly.
I am starting to build my collection of Sizzix dies so these ideas are very helpful! Does it make a difference whether the dies are stored standing upright or laying flat on top of each other (like if I put them in a drawer)?
I bought some leather covered boxes used for storing dvds. They have little hanging folders in them. They are just the right size for sizzlets, folders, and nestabilities. The bigz dies stand up sideways so I can see which die it is.
