12x12 paper file cabinet?

Help! I need file cabinets for my 12x12 papers! And can't find them! My husband smokes and it discolors my papers so I need to keep it closed up. I store my 8 1/2 x 11 in file cabinets and it works great but I'm having trouble finding them for my 12x12's. Can someone tell me where to find them? Or brand names to start looking for? Links would be greatly appreciated! ;-) Thanks!

LOL maybe - I know I like the size of it but I haven't bought one yet because I would like one that looked less modern/specific furniture-y...

So I'm stalking this thread for an option that is the size I need, and strong and won't break down nor need me to hire an elephant to put the drawer in and out and looks more traditional.

I have also decided that I would like the drawers to be large enough to store actual scrapbooks the empty ones that are for filling. ;)

I might go to a local cabinet maker and see what they can do and for what cost.

I got three of the white Store in Style 12x12 filer cubes for $12.50 each at Michaels on clearance about 6 months ago. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. LOL~

I got mine at IKEA. You can switch the size to either 81/2" x 11" or 12" x 12". I love them. I use it for my DSP, Cardstock, Scrap Kits, Keepers, Chipboard -- basically everything!! They also have 3 drawers (about 6" high) but really long. One drawer at top and 2 drawers inside file cabinet (hidden when drawer is closed). If you use the cabinet for 12" x 12" stuff, you take one of the inside drawers out. They have combination locks and automatically slide shut. They were a little over $200 if I remember correctly. I think they were the Ganton? brand. See pics in my gallery; in the album called "New Studio." HTH

Nice that it has a support castor for the drawer. The lack of support/ease of the drawer is what has put me off the smaller cube units.

Yes, this is the brand (wasn't too far off on the spelling) I got the files in white so they were $140. They are very, very sturdy -- will last more than my lifetime and clean up really nice (glitter, glitter everywhere -- LOL). Yes, they cost more than cubes, but even if you bought just one -- you will not regret and I promise you will go back for more (as you can see, I have 6). I have all 48 colors and new in-colors in two of them (most have 2 packs of paper in each file, plus baggie o scraps). I store current 12" x 12" items (DSP, chipboard, scrap kits, etc.) in another; and discontinued of same in another. In my other 2, I have one for 8 1/2" x 11 cardstock, paper bought before I became a demonstrator from that other company and the other cabinet for 12" x 12" contrabande (which I will never use, but keep it for kids projects). I store all my punches, projects I'm working on, cutters, matts, stencils, rub-ons, etc. (basically tons of stuff) in the drawers.

Oops, I forgot to mention that a couple of my drawers hold my really thick 12" x 12" albums (25-30 pages completed) that are in progress along with embellishments for that album in SU 12" x 12" keeper. So the drawers are tall enough to accommodate your albums.

I had found the one at Oriental Trading but was hesitant because the reviews said they had trouble opening and closing and that it was hard to fit the files in it. I think the $499 is just a weeeee bit outta my price range. LOL But I think I'm going to try the one from IKEA. Not a bad price and if I llove it I can save up for the next one. I'll let ya know how it goes.

That's true about Ikea s/h. If you have an IKEA within a 2 hr distance, it's worth it! I go to IKEA every other month and it's about 2 hrs+ one way but I stock up on our food that we buy there. (My husband is Norwegian so we find the Scandinavian food we can't find elsewhere there) I make a day of it and it's so worth the trip.

I bought my 12x12 storage containers from Wal-Mart about 3 - 3 1/2 years ago. Each cube has 3 drawers that hold quite a bit of paper. They weren't that expensive so I bought 3. I have my 12x12 paper sorted by color with each color in a different drawer.

The Ikea option isn't as pricey, but I still consider it a considered option I know I'm not buying until I have a better plan of what will go where.

I have 12 x 12 plastic drawer stacking cabinets that I keep my paper in. I found them at Walmart and I think they have them at Target as well, very reasonable around $10 -12 for a set with 3 drawers. I sort the paper by colors. I have them for my 8 x 11 paper as well. My DH made me a cabinet to put them in. I'm working on him to make me one for the 12 x 12 ones next. Here is a link to a picture.

I wish horizontal filing worked for me - I have tried it and it just doesn't. However it does make me happy when people say it works for them! :mrgreen:

I started out storing them vertically but had problems with my paper bending. How do you keep your paper from bending? I do think it saves space to store them that way.

What I like best about these plastic drawers is that you can see the colors even when closed.

So far I have too much for it too bend. :oops:

My plan was to use the cropper hopper files if necessary to limit bending.

I love the cabinet your husband built! I also have the 12x12 (4 of them) and have the same problem with them sagging - this is a great solution. I also love these because I can take a whole drawer out and take it to my work space. Hadn't thought about them for the 8.5 x 11 but now I just might ... Thanks for sharing!

I have a 2 shelf bookshelf with doors that I bought at office depot or office max. I keep mine in there so light can't get to them. I keep them in the bags they come in, or the plastic envelopes and stand them upright on the bottom shelf, and the 8 1/2 x 11 paper on the top shelf.

I'm afraid that if I stored my 12x12 in the drawers they would get dog eared from searching through the stack to find what I want. Does that happen to you?
I guess my vertical 81/2x11 paper doesn't bend because it's in hanging files and I have 2 color families hanging in one drawer so it's pushed close enough together for the files to support each other.

I checked Joann's and it looks like there are two pieces to the cart. The first is the rolling cart, which is on sale now for 29.99. I'll try and leave a link...Rolling Cart

The next piece was a box with a lid that sits in the cart. It was called a class tote but I cannot seem to locate it any where. I'm guessing CH is no longer selling it. I came across a similiar product from RubberMaid. Hope this helps...

I have the cropper hopper and it has a lid and the files for hanging them. When you buy a cropper hopper it gives you the info you need to buy more of the hanging folders.
However I am now living in a smaller place and need to downsize my paper, I like that cabnit table, so i saved the link and going to see if i can find someone who is good with woodworking to make it for me.

I don't have problems with my Iris cart- I got at JoAnns. I just make sure I "stack" the paper nicely to put it back in. I also have one of the 12X12 stand up things from SU. I don't know how happy I am with it for storage but it is good for transporting.

I haven't had that problem because I take out the whole stack from the drawer to look through the patterned paper. The solid colors I can see through the drawers and I also keep them in color families (3 drawers per family, 4 colors in each drawer)

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I love the price of the plastic drawers, but hate that they do that leaning thing when you fill them up, and they definitely aren't pretty. This cabinet idea solves ALL of the issues i have with the plastic drawers! My DH is too busy (and uninterested) in building a cabinet for me, but I'm okay doing DIY. I have a dresser that I already stole all of the drawers out of to make a shelving unit (you can see it HERE), so I think I'll just take the drawer supports out and call it a "cabinet". Thanks for the inspiration!
