minor updates have been made to the Stack Rules chart - added additional dies, grouped similar dies - hope this is easier for all!

Hello
Beate asked me to contact the forum about a sandwiching problem I am having. Has anybody cut thin cotton cloth with the bug? I have some old shirts of my husbands that weren't fit to pass on to charity. I thought I might try to make some lavender bags or use some of the fabric for patchwork squares but although my bug cuts felt well, I cannot find a successful sandwich for the thin cotton. Can anyone help please?

Thank you very much

It may depend on what kind of die you are using. The Sizzix Bigz dies cut through fabric without any problem. You should be able to cut through about 8 layers of thin material, fewer layers of something heavier.

Default The dies I am using are Nesties

Thanks for getting back to me Lacy, I have mainly got Nesties, I should have mentioned that. Will it be better to try to cut more than one layer of cotton at a time, I have just been using single sheets so far?

Thanks

i would DEFINITELY cut more than a single ply of cotton... i think you'd have better luck. or, try using a piece of cardstock with the cotton.

Default Several layers it is then

Thanks a lot Cat, I'll try more layers. I have been trying with more card and paper but perhaps the secret is more fabric.

Best wishes

Also something to consider is where you place the items in your sandwich.

When I did a sandwich of Plate A, Plate B, 1 layer of fabric, nestie (cut side down), Plate C, it did not cut thru the fabric, except in a couple of spots. (My B plates are pretty chewed up)

I added 1 thin piece of cardstock underneath Plate B and got most of the die cut... several spots didn't cut thru clean.

However, when I used the same sandwich, but with the cardstock directly under the fabric, it cut thru perfectly.

I have a question regarding the B Plates for the Cuttlebug. I've been using mine for awhile, and the one plate is bowed. It still works, but can someone tell me if this is normal, or am I doing something wrong. Thanks

Yes, this is completely normal. To help prevent this, periodically flip your B plate over when running it through the Bug.

Thank you so much for such a quick reply. I was sure concerned I was doing something wrong. I have flipped over occassionally, but I will do so more often. Thanks again.

i always try to make sure that only one of my B plates gets "cut". the more marked the plate, the more likely it is to bow. but, by only cutting into one plate, i have fewer to replace

I will make sure I do that, thanks for the tip. I didn't realize just how much I would use my CB after getting it, and I am so hooked. The plates are sure getting used (or should I say abused?)

A caution on a bowed plate... If you have one that you haven't been flipping, even occasionally, don't suddenly decide to flip it. It will crack and eventually break. Don't ask me how I know this!

Default Cuttlebug Plates

I just recently bought my Cuttlebug and I was shocked at how the plates get cut. I thought I was doing something wrong. However, this forum eased my mind when I found out that this is normal. I too am trying to only damage one "B" plate for cutting. Thanks for everyone's comments.

It is worth the money to purchase an extra set of B plates to have on hand. I've cracked more than one... well, ya know if you really want to utilize your machine, there's gonna be some experimenting.

Thank you so much for this warning. I will flip occasionally - maybe every other time to prevent this from happening. Thanks again.

I just went out yesterday and purchased a set of two B plates. I had a 40% coupon for Hobby Lobby - so they only case around $4.00. Well worth it.

You are so right! This happened to me in the middle of a large project when stores were not open. But here's an emergency fix: you can tape it back together with several layers of wide mailing tape or duct tape and still use it pretty well until you can buy new plates!

yeah, cuz if you don't, then you do, it could break, so I have been told. So I make it a habit to always flip back and forth.

Thanks for all your hard work. I have found the stack rules on the first post but can you give me the post number for the latest list. I am getting in a muddle going backwards and forwards.

I don't know if anyone else has posted this but if you cannot get the gasket rubber you can use a silicone baking sheet. In the UK they are very cheap at Tesco or Asda.

Thanks. Surprising since they are plastic. Do they wear out quickly?

They're not plastic.

I have mine hanging up but the littlest ones didn't quite fit - so I stuck them on a piece of magnet.

Plastic won't stick to magnet.

When you use a sticky mat with the cuttlebug, don't take off the protective film and it works fine.
