Default Need directions (pun intended!)

Ok. I'm thinking that my 8-11 year old grandkids would love to do some of this. I think I could really get into it.

But, despite what I have read about beginning (I have Idiot's Guide to Geocaching on hold at the library, so...), too many "buzz" terms are used for me to get the picture. I need common everyday English as to how to get going.

You experts (you've done this for more than one search) need to give me some step-by-steps. AKA a tutorial. About absolutely everything to do to get started...website, apps, etc. (I don't have a GPS unit and can't get one right now.)

Pretty please with a cherry on top...

I've done a little over 218 caches so far. Not a lot but then more than some. You need to start by creating an account at geocaching.com. You will choose a username and password. It is free, although they do offer premium memberships which would get you alerts when new caches go up in your area. You will need a GPS or smartphone with those capabilities because the "hides" are posted using GPS coordinates. You can look for hides nearby and then program the coordinates into your GPS and then follow them to find. Keep in mind there are some obvious places people hide things. Lamppost bases, guardrails, trees in cemeteries, etc. Cemeteries are my favorite hunt because no one really cares if you are wondering around in there. Once you find one, you go back to the website to log your find. You can also log a DNF (did not find) or you can log if the cache is in bad shape and needs maintenance. If you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help as much as possible. I can tell you that caches can be as tiny as your pinkie and you would need tweezers to pull out the log to sign it. Oh yes, once you find the cache you write your geocaching name and date on it and place it back where you found it. Always have a pencil and tweezers. If it says nano or micro cache you will probably need the tweezers!

If you go on the hunts in the woods, take water, batteries for GPS, and a towel. I once slid down the hill near a waterfall and got muddy! Laughed the whole way home because there was nothing in the cache except the log to sign. Some caches contain swag, which is items to trade. You take something, then you leave something in its place. If you take a trackable item, you need to drop it off at another cache and then log it on the site so people can see where there trackable is. My gold cache went missing and I never did find it again.

Here's a place to start by creating your account.

Thanks, Kathy. I've done the account at geocaching.com and have loaded one of the apps on my iPhone. I'm going to try out a couple before taking my grandkids out. There's a lot right near my house, and near their house.

Funny story. I checked out a book on geocaching from the kids section at the library, hoping that my grandson would pick it up and look at it. He did. So he wanted a log book. Never mind that I was occupied making dinner and trying to feed his 8 month old brother. It's got to be now. Well, I managed to make one before he left for home.

Fast forward. He makes these "iPhones" and "iPods" out of K'nex for his sisters to play with. Only this week those are "out". What's appropriate now is GPS units.

Well, TeamStarlite has found its first cache!

It was VERY cleverly done and I actually picked it up more than once without noticing what it was. The clues were just as clever, and only reading the comments on the app helped me to look closer.

It was a section of log that was cut then screwed back together for a top, then a space for a tube was drilled in one side.

We're home to have dinner then off to find one or two more before I take the grandkids home.
