I saw a thread a little while back, about how those goofy letters are difficult to read...and I agree. Sometimes it take me several tries to get it right.
Can someone please explain why it is even necessary to have this feature in the first place? I guess I just don't understand. Anyone? Thanks!

I think it's so that advertisements and spam can't be computer generated and sent to blogs. An actual human would have to enter the "code" and that would take WAY too long for the spammers.

Yep, that's the reason. I have a friend who didn't have a filter on and was getting advertisements and such. My mom's website had porn getting in, so the "drunken" letters make it very difficult for autobot spam and undesirable posts from appearing.
I received a spam comment a while ago, although I used word verification, with a link in it on "how to approve your blog", I clicked on the link and it brought me to a Casino site ...
I have word verification turned off now, but I will definitaly put it back on if I get spammed again.
It is because hackers can't read these verifications. They don't work within the windows environment. They work in a computer language so since they can't read them, they can't get through. Never turn your verification numbers off. Doesn't matter whether you have a mac or not. Hackers are targeting the networks, not your particular computer, in this instance. They do target your computers too, but in this case they are targeting the servers. It is not only protection from spam, it is protection from hackers going into the back door and getting your information.
