Smile What type of thread???

What type of thread do you use to sew on cards with the sewing machine? I have general use thread, and I have quilter's thread (for handsewing) and I have one bobbin of black upholstery thread. I've seen the button craft thread, which is made for hand sewing etc.., but it seems like it would be too thick. What type do you use? I want it to show up well, and I've read where someone said to get a thicker thread, but I wasn't exactly sure what type they meant. Maybe, one of you could help me with that. I've already bought the smaller sewing needle for my machine. Just needed a little more info. Thanks in advance!

I just use regular old general purpose thread. I have a few needles that are "dedicated" to sewing paper, so I don't dull my fabric-sewing needles. Using a contrasting color makes the stitching show up more, and if I really want the stitching to stand out I'll use upholstery thread. Others I've read about use embroidery floss and hand-stitch it on the cards, but I machine-stitch mine...

Thank you, Sue! I looked at some of your cards, and they are all gorgeous!

I too just use regular sewing thread - mostly Gutermann as that's what I use for sewing, but I have some unbranded stuff that came with the budget sewing machine I got for using upstairs in my craft space.

Thank you for your responses! I think I'll practice first before I try it on an actual card, and I may use a printed image on the first one, so if I mess up, I won't be upset if I ruin an image I colored. Thanks so much!

It's always good to try stitching an inch or two on a scrap of the paper you're using - and through multiple layers if you're using more than one sheet of paper. You may need to adjust your tension slightly, and it gives you a chance to see if the stitch length (width too, for zigzag) are what you're hoping for. I haven't seen a lot of people mention this, and it's probably a carry-over from my dress-making habits .

If you wanted thicker but not over the top, have a look for top stitching thread. Guttermann sell it. There is a range of colours, 33yds to a reel (I think normal thread is 109yds to a reel). I can't speak from papercraft experience but it went through the machine needle easily when I used it on denims or coats.

I use rayon thread mostly because it adds a nice sheen to you card.
I also use general purpose thread.

Gregsgurl is right that you should dedicate a machine needle to your paper crafting.
The paper dulls your needle.

Cook22 is also right that your should try sewing on a sample of the layers you plan to use.
I have quite a few sewing samples in my gallery. Have fun sewing on your cards.

I've used the topstitching thread just fine on cards. I just have more colors of upholstery thread on hand than I do topstitching, because my "day job" includes upholstery. I'm with you on the Guttermann - it's the ONLY brand I use!

Hoptownracer: Thanks for the compliment (and for taking the time to scope my gallery) - much appreciated! Good luck on your stitching adventures!
