Default For those of you who do Parchment Craft

I am working my way through a starter kit as a way of learning. I have bought the pattern of a card that I want to try to do for a very good friend in a couple of months.

My question is ... how do you handle the writing in the cards? Do you put a cardstock insert into each card so you can write in them, or is there some other way to do it?

I have done Parchment craft for years although recently I have been doing regular cards.
After I finish the card I use text weight paper in a color that will look nice behind the velum design and make an insert on my computer. Then I "sew" it into the fold using Krennik gold or silver thread

Fold the insert to fit the card. Put the insert inside the card
Pierce 3 holes down "in the fold" going through both the velum and the insert. Make the top hole about 1/4th down from the top of the fold and the bottom hole about 1/4th of the way up the fold. The center hole in the center of the fold

Mentally label the holes in a vertical row #1, #2. #3

Thread a needle with the Krennik thread. NO Knot on the end

From the inside bring your needle "out" at the center hole ( #2) Leave a tail

From the outside of the fold Go back "in" at the top hole ( #1)

From the inside of the fold Go "out" at the center hole "again "
From the outside of the fold go Back "in" at the bottom hole (#3)

Slide you needle under the place where thread came down from the top hole to the center hole and tie a small double knot. Clip the tails

Some people cut mini glue dots to attach an insert but due to the transparency of vellum the only way to hide the glue dots is to have a design that has heavy embossing to hide them . There is no way to hide the glue dots behind cut work.

In this card I decided to tie a bow on the outside of the card

On this parchment card I used mini glue dots behind the embossed edge and attached the parchment design front to a red cardstock base

If you want to buy some fabulous beginner DVD's a woman named Christine Coleman has 5 of them. She explains everything it great detail and has close up's of the techniques so you can see exactly what she is doing.
She directs these DVD's to total beginners who may never had done parchment craft and is not familiar with the tools or how to use them.
If you buy only one be sure to buy the first one.

Some people use the word Pergamano interchangeably for parchment craft, but Pergamano is a brand of Parchment craft tools , books and supplies. In my opinion the Pergamano brand books and patterns are the best. They are professionally drawn. Some other patterns are hand drawn and can be a challenge especially for a beginner

Here is a link to Christine Coleman's DVD's

Hope this helps
