Default To those of you that have made journals

as gifts. Can you tell me if they have been well received?

I would like to make journals for family members by adding bible verses to pages and a photo or two of them. Just concerned that if I go through the work of this, would they actually use the journal?

My adult family and friends do not journal so they didn't use the ones I gave them. The kids like the composition books for school.

What the adults did like were small notebooks where they could record PC passwords/links and covered 5 x7" ruled pads for making lists. I make the covered 5x7 pads so they can refill them with another pad.

What they like the most is when I make small scrapbook albums as none of them scrapbook. The scrapbooks are usually only about 6 pages (including the covers) and the thank you notes I receive they say they will cherish them and feel so special for receiving this gift.

For Christmas gifts I've gotten school date/assignment books and decorated them. They can be used as prayer/devotional/daily planner type journals. My co-workers loved them.

Thank you for the insight. The small scrapbook sounds like the way to go since most of my family do not journal. I appreciate your input

The small scrapbook idea is splendid!

I have given 5x7 or 4x4 custom notepads created with my bind-it-all or Rubicoil very successfully. This size is great for "lists" and is easily carried along in a purse .. or just used at home as a pretty & special notepad. They've been very well-received.

So many love the smaller scrapbooks. I just recently made one for the man who half owns one of my horses with me of pictures of the horses. He didn't know I was doing an album and he was very pleased. He goes to the races every weekend and he takes it with him so people can see. I put in the breeding of each horse and its race record. It is also an advertisement for me, in a way, because one other owner has put in an EOI and has told two other people. So fingers crossed.

This is also what I did for a memorial of one of my horses who died. I couldn't bear to look at pictures of him, as I just cried and cried, but after a while, I did the small album and it was very cathartic for me.

I feel the kids received them much better than the adults.

I agree with the other comments that notebooks and small albums are better-received by adults than journals are. The exception to that is if it is a specialized journal, specific to the interest of the recipient. I made a garden journal two years ago for a good friend of mine who has quite the green thumb and quite the amazing gardens all around her house, and she was thrilled! She's still using it two years later. I blogged about it "back then" - click HERE to check it out, if you like...

I've done both the mini books and the journals. People like the mini scrapbooks much better than the journals.

I have found that journals for specific topics are usually better received than just a generic journal. I recently made a travel journal for a friend that is retiring, and a prayer journal for our Pastor's wife.

I've found that small notebooks titled "Gotta Do This...", "Stuff to Remember", "Important Stuff" or "Notes" sell very well. Women like to keep these in their purses.

how sad is this...I am done making things for gifts to people unless they specifically ask for something...including cards.

Comment I have received in the past year...

from my sister after I sent some 'just because' cards: Don't send anymore cards. They are cute but I have enough.

from my sister after I made 3 specialty 8x8 albums for my niece and got no thank you so I called to be sure they got there: Oh, I guess she got them. I really don't care for scrapbooks (I made her one for her 50th birthday).

Hmm. All the negative seems to come from her...Ok, she is not getting anymore of anything. For my friends, they will still receive! LOL

Just went to your gallery. Your work is awesome! Beautifully laid out and meticulously constructed. Your sister may not have the same "tastes" as you do, or maybe she is just frustrated because she is not as creative - but do NOT stop making things. Your work is beautiful and I have no doubt it will be appreciated by many. That said, you are right -- you may need to be more selective as to who you make things for. LOL

Last year I made journals and journaling prompts for my young adult,/teen grandaughters. They loved them, even asked me for another book after that one was full.

I've made covered scorepad folders that were a big hit with my family who plays a lot of cards. Took a series of Uno cards, laid them out randomly on the the copy machine and printed a 1/2 sheet. Used it as background paper and simply made a label saying, "Cards." Then put in the 5x7 tablet inside the folder. Easy to make. Easy to replace. And used for lots of fun card games.

aw--thanks. She did something today-again-that was hurtful to my daughter. So I went to write in my new, cute journal and it helped so much!

I say make those puppies and get them out there to those who need them!

Glitter Guru - Your sister obviously has a problem. I'd try not to pay much attention to what she says and stay motivated by what your true friends say. No one needs negativity in their life.

We just did a family vacation - my 80 year old folks, two sisters, one brother and myself - all in our 50's to Oregon and Washington. Haven't done a "family" vacation since we were kids ourselves. It was fabulous. But then...we all get alone. I'm very thankful my immediate family as well as aunts/cousins, etc. have a close relationship. Not everyone does.

I recently finished 40 of the composition books that I turned into spelling journals for my neighbors 2nd grade class. She asked me last night if I would like to make her a pile to sell because the students parents and teachers were nuts about them. Some of the pictures are in my gallery...the rest of the pictures are in my camera...lol I made two of each design I made...
blessings.

I made a journal for my youngest cousin (she is 8 ) for her birthday last year and she totally didn't get it even though she loves to write stories all the time but ALL the other little girls at her party went gaga over it and that helped make all the difference! Hope the other kids are at the party again next year!

Thanks for keeping this post going

I appreciate all the insight from everyone.

I'm still trying to decide which I will do---mini scrapbook or journal or even a list notebook as many of you have done.

Thanks again
