Question Stamping a Trailer?

We bought a big, white trailer recently and my husband wants me to decorate it so that it will be easily identifiable should it go "missing". He doesn't care what I do to it, I have full artistic license.

Has anyone decorated anything like this? What kind of paint or ink should I use? I'm sure I'll have to seal it to weatherproof it, but should I worry about lightfastness?

Also, *what* should I stamp? It's such a big canvas (5'x9') that I really don't know what to do. I'd love to do something cute with Wild About You or something similar, but the images will be so small that I don't think it will work. The wall in the SU catalog for Mixed Bouquet is pretty cool, but is it to girly for a trailer?

I am totally open to suggestions for the supplies and the design! I'll post pictures when I'm done. Thanks so much for any help!

Definitely go for a big design. The Grapevine DD one, maybe. Or as you said, the Mixed Bouquet, and maybe make it like a vine, so it might help overcome the fact that the images themselves are so small.

As for paint/ink, look in a craft store where they sell ceramic pots. I can't think of the brand, but they make an outdoor paint specifically designed to withstand sun, rain, etc. Or, you could use regular acrylic paint and sealer, but I don't know how that would work.

The only thing I would wonder is, if the trailer is metal or fiberglass? Experimentation is probably your best bet. Maybe start with a small design somewhere and live with it to see how well it holds up. Sounds like a fun project!

I would go to a craft shop and look for the really big stamps that are made especially for walls. With regular card size stamps, it might take forever.

Type "tin" in the gallery search and it will give you lots of ideas! ;-)

Sorry, couldn't resist. Lots of artists would be so jealous to have such a big canvas to work on. You must post photos of your progess. I would do something you enjoy. Maybe a big stripe of color on the sides and then put the stamping on that.

Have Fun!

Have you noticed the rv's that have swirly graphics? Like a big swoosh? As Kathy said, do a stripe and stamp on that - I am thinking that swirls would be a bit more forgiving. There might even be decal type designs that could be stamped on - we got decals at an auto place once.

Enjoy the project!

Whew, I'm glad it's not me!! I'm sooooo not talented enough to design anything bigger than a card! Sounds so exciting, though, for those of you that do have that talent!!
We had a tongue lock for dh's race car trailer. It's a ball that fits in the tongue that has a slide lock with keyhole. You have to unlock it to remove the ball to hook the tongue onto your vehicle's ball. We got it at Walmart for about $35 I think.

Have fun!!

Leslie

p.s.--where in TX?

What is the trailer going to be used for? That's where I would start....

Thanks for the input!

To answer some questions, the trailer will most likely be used to haul things to and from the theater when we build sets, but we bought it for future hurricane evacuations. We're on the Gulf Coast.

We do have some sort of locking mechanism, but we still would like it to have some identifying marks. (Plus, it will be fun!)

I don't know if the trailer is metal or fiberglass. I *think* it's metal but could be totally making that up. I will definitely look in the ceramic pot area! Thanks for that advice!

I hadn't really thought of big swash of color and then stamping around that. Good idea! I am *so* stamping and not painting this thing as I am not a good freehand artist.

It looked like there was something big and nasty on the satelite map this morning so I guess I better get cracking! I wonder if I can get DH to buy Mixed Bouquet for me to try out, hmmm....
