I am planning on doing coasters at a stamp camp. I have never done this before and am in need of some help. I saw in a few places people use the Botticino tiles, but if you don't like the look of those (the ones I found at lowes were grey looking) can you use matte finish tiles? (found them at lowes......really cheap...) Also, I have read that you should use the black staz on and then color in with something else (pencils, pastels with qtip...) but I received a set of coasters from my SS (THANKS AGAIN!! ) and she stamped with color...not sure how that worked....
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Yes, you can make coasters from the matte tiles. The only problem is they are not absorbent like the grey ones are. It is possible that condensation from a glass could accumulate on the tile surface and then drip on to the furniture below, specially if you live in an area with high humidity. Also be certain to seal the surface very well as they will be subject to quite a bit of moisture. I have never made coasters with the matte tiles for this reason, but I have made fridge magnets with the small 2x2 ones. I stamped them with colored stazon and colored in where I wanted with colored Sharpies markers. They have dozens of pretty colors of Sharpies nowdays so your selection is excellent. HTH

I would not use the Matte tiles to make coasters - they are not poureous so the ink is not absorbed so it will reside on-top of the tile - it can be washed away with certain cleaning chemicals...if you seal the matte tiles then you run the possibility of the ink transferring to the sealant material - if the sealent gets chipped the image will be chipped to.
I would stick with the Bottochino tiles - they come 9 to a box for about $6 - so they are about .67 a piece.
there are a variety of Staz-on colors available - SU carries all of them and I know Joannes and Micheals carry a limited number of them (at least where I live).
You can also use Chalk ink to stamp on tiles - I have done that - stamp solid images with Chalk ink and also used it to color in outline stamps (used old blender pens to pick up and apply the color)
I have always baked mine for about 20 minutes just to set in the image...once it is there pretty hard to budge it...
If you screw up a tile soak it in Bleach for a little while and the image should fade...you can do this even after the tile is baked but you aren't going to fade the image completely...

I agree with not using the matte finish tiles. Last year I made a ton at Christmas time for an Arts & Crafts show using the Rialto tiles from Lowes. They come in about 4 different colors, white, beige, reddish color and a greenish color. They only cost around .33 cents each. I like these better than the Bottochino ones because there's more than one color.
I've never baked my tiles, or sealed them in any way. I just use Stazon ink and Sharpies and I've never had any problems with them running or anything. Tiles are fun and extremely easy to make!
I use this kind too! I love them! I do bake mine though but don't seal. Denise
p.s. I bake mine because when I started doing them that's what the instrucions said.
As to the tiles. I've used the 4 X 4 Bottichino tiles (real inexpensive). I've used the polished stone technique then used the Staz On ink and stamped an image over that. Also, chalks work well too.
Funny you should ask... I spent most of last weekend experimenting w/ tiles - I like the Tumbled Marble the best (is this the Bottochino?). I had received one from my SS and just couldn't stop! And I agree, I wouldn't seal the coasters.
Things that worked:
Stazon
Chalk Inks (unfortunately I have a limited pallette for the moment, but I'm getting the SU sets on Tuesday!)
Ranger Alcohol Inks were pretty cool and didn't run
Glitter Glue (no heating, just sealing)
Gloss Medium Varnish (like you use for acrylic painting - this is really cool if you mix it w/ PearlEx!) - for magnets
I haven't sealed them in the oven yet, but I did use my heatgun.
Things that didn't work too well:
Twinkling H2Os... OK until I tried to seal them (these were 2x2 for magnets)
Spray Gloss - this even made the Stazon run!
I also use the Botticino ones from Lowes. I stamp with Staz On, then give it a zap with my heat gun. Then I use my watercolor pencils and blender pens. Finish up with Acrylic Matte Sealer by Krylon. I do two light coats. No, the tile doesn't absorb the liquid, so it leaves a ring of water on the tile. I just wipe it off or my DH just lets it dry. I have been using mine for 6 months and the color hasn't budged. I'll have to try the chalk inks when I have the budge to buy some. I want to try the 2 x 2 for magnets one of these days. Have fun!
