Hi! I have a Stampin Up stamp pad (old style) that was damaged when a friend used bleach on her stamp and then used the ink pad without cleaning off the bleach first. The surface of the pad is bleached and has hardened in spots so that I can't get even ink coverage on my stamps. Does anyone know if I can fix this in any way? I'm thinking that I'll probably have to replace the pad but thought I'd ask! Thanks!
I don't think I'd attempt fixing it. I'd just buy a new foam ink pad. If you have reinkers you can, in most cases, use the same refill on the foam pads.
Yes, I figure that I'm going to have to get a new pad. I have the re-inker but it's not working well because of the actual ink pad linen cover being damaged.
If it's the old style - the linen - they live forever. I'd rinse the pad under running water until you feel like it's all out and reink it. I've had worse things than that happen to my ink pads and they are easy to save - that surface is very durable.
I would think that the felt pad would be OK with bleach on it, just rinse well or soak it then ink it. You may end up having to replace it but it's worth a shot.

The craft inks (including white) came in the spongy foam pads, the old dye inks were the linen. I agree with you though, it can't hurt to try to fix it if it's ruined already! And like Lydia said, they are pretty durable.
But yeah, if I was the friend I'd be offering you a new pad anyway! That's not very nice!

But could you buy the white in the linen classic pads? I thought you could only get white in the craft ink pads....at least the catalogs I have since I started buying SU only have them available in in craft.

Yes, it's the old linen pad and I may try this before buying a new one. If it doesn't hurt, I'm no worse off! I'm not worried about the bleaching of the pad but it seems to have hardened the surface in spots so I don't get an even stamp image.
Thanks for your suggestions everyone! Yes, my friend did offer to pay for a new pad once she found out that this one was ruined but I don't think I'll be letting her use my supplies again!! We were stamping together in a group and I didn't realize she was trying the bleach stamping technique or I would have stopped her...argh! She's a great friend, but careless so I don't usually loan anything to her!

No, never white ink because it's always been craft ink. They have never had white dye ink. I'm not sure you even can have white dye ink. I'm not sure where the white thing has come from, did I miss something...which is totally possible with me these days lol!

Not sure where the discussion of white ink came from either but maybe they are discussing an uninked pad?? Does Stampin Up even sell pads that are un-inked?
And as for missing something (along with forgettin!), I'm with you on that!

Oh, I'm sorry! I need to go back and read because I thought we were discussing a white ink pad! Thats where my questions came in about which type of pad it was! Sorry. I need to learn to read more thoroughly!
I just read back and now I feel dumb! I am wondering if I was in another thread discussing white ink pads and confused it with this one!! Again, forgive me for the goof!

Haha!! Don't worry about it...the discussion of a white ink pad was informative even if that's not what we started with! The ink pad that I have with the damage is actually Riding Hood Red.

Oh, no! That's even worse because that color retired and you won't be able to order a new one! Hope you can clean yours up. You may be able to find one on eBay or in the buy/sell/trade section on SCS.

I know! I just found out that it's retired but fortunately someone on this forum has one to sell but I just need to find her post so I can email her!

LOL! No worries! I used to laugh at people who blamed "baby brain" but I TOTALLY have it and post ridiculous and wrong info on a daily basis, I swear! The struggle is REAL! LOL! So just pretend you're pregnant and everyone will understand ;-)
I should also not be allowed to post pre or mid cup of coffee in the morning preggo or not. I also am pretty dumb and unable to read before my cup is gone!!!!! ;-)
And I get threads confused all the time! Luckily everyone on here is pretty forgiving!!!!! And that friend totally owes her an ink pad!!!!!!!!

Oh my goodness, thank you SO much for suggesting that i wash it and re-ink because amazingly...after I tried that it's as good as new! After I read through all the posts and suggestions, I took a closer look at the pad under bright lights and noticed that the surface of the pad had some kind of gunky residue on it along with what I thought were bleach marks. I was able to scrape some of it off and I figured that since the pad was useless now anyway I may as well go ahead and wash it off in the sink. You can imagine the mess that Riding Hood Red made but I was careful not to let it splash. I rinsed with warm water for a good 5-10 minutes and then let it dry out somewhat, upside down on layers of old newspaper. I was able to see the gunky stuff just rinse off right away and now I'm wondering if she used something else in addition to bleach (but what???). Needless to say, I am oh so happy now with a re-inked pad that works perfectly. And I will not be letting my friend use any of my "stuff" again! LOL!

The "gunk" you're describing is actually the red pigment in that ink - something funky happens to it sometimes as it ages and several of the reds did that for a while. You can just do the same thing if it happens again.
I think the worst mishap i ever saw with stamp pads was during a SU workhop. There was a lady who happened to be a demo also attending this workshop. She asked me if I had ever seen this cool technique. She asked the demo who was having the workshop for a white craft pad. The Demo opened a brand new pad. This lady stamped an image in Not Quite navy...didn't clean the stamp and you guessed it ...inked the navy stamp with the white pad...she did this several times until the pad was a mixture of NQN and white...I told her to clean the stamp several times... she didn't listen and ended up ruining 2 stamp pads...The demo told me later that the NQN pad was new and she opened it for the party...When I said something to the other demo she said "that's just the cost of doing business" There might have been a back story I don't know....

Eek! I think that's pretty common. I've done it once or twice myself, but have been able to clean it rather than it being ruined. And yes bdeyes9, if you do classes/events, you're bound to have someone that is a rhinestone-addict or a ink mixer or stamp misplacer. I did a make and take at an event once and a bunch of kids stopped by... ink was everywhere, but they seemed to have fun. It's almost always replaceable and not something to throw away friendships or fun over.

Since I teach a lot of classes I have to fix a lot of stamp "oops" I have rinsed and re-filled many an inkpad - that's what I love about those linen ones. I'm glad you gave it a shot!

Wow, that's so strange that the color in that ink gunks up! The other reds that I have are fine and this was really weird looking because some areas of the pad were bleached looking so i figured it was the bleach that did it! Maybe the bleach interacted with the dye ink?? Either way I am so happy that i tried fixing it and I thank you!

Yikes! I would think that someone who was a demo would know better than to go back and forth between ink pads without cleaning the stamps! I wonder what her own ink pads looked like...lol! I have been to stamp classes at my demonstrator's house where students failed to clean their stamps and made huge messes of ink pads but never as bad as Not Quite Navy on White Craft pads! I've even taught my 3 1/2 year old grand-daughter to clean her stamps before she uses a new ink color and she's such a crack up as she meticulously cleans in between each stamped image! She'll even remind me to do it!
Yes, I figure that I'm going to have to get a new pad. I have the re-inker but it's not working well because of the actual ink pad linen cover being damaged.
I wonder if you could tear off the inky felt pad and use cut and dry felt? Glue it on with original gorilla glue.
Some people dont have boundaries...they just do whatever...which may work in their house but then they are touching our stuff and it's a problem. I hope she does not cop an attitude when you say she cant use your stuff anymore. I hate when that happens.."What? Whhhhyyyyy?? Aren't you my friend??" or "Well excuse me Miss Stamping Princess". ugh
OMG on the totally inconsiderate demo....I once was a demo (for another industry) sure we all know newbies make mistakes...but as a demo you also know it costs money to have all the stuff you need for your kit- discount or not! Geez! That was REALLY lousy of her imo.
Oh boy...I feel like Daffy Duck..."mine! Mine! Mine! Down down down! I'm rich! I'm a happy miser! All mine!" LOL I dont think I am ready for crops yet....

Memories makes a white dye ink. It is not as bright white as embossed white, but it works for most things when you really need a dye ink.
