Default Santa Stamp - Similar to Gumball Graphics **UPDATE

Ok, for all of you in love with the Gumball Graphics Santa Stamp (here's a beautiful card made with it... http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/ga...0&ppuser=34233)

I've been emailing a lady at Stamp Francisco and they have been getting so many inquiries about then having this stamp (they acquired images from GUMBO Graphics and not GUMBALL Graphics) that they have decided to go ahead and make their own version.

******Update******

Check out the newly revised version on page 2, post #57...

I don't like the Stamp Francisco version at all. I'd love to have the Gumball Graphics Santa, but wouldn't buy the Stamp Francisco version.

Since I couldn't afford the Gumball version, I think these are excellent choices. I love them. I'm very interested in finding out which ones are finally produced and how much they're going to cost. I'd love to buy one!

Thanks so much for sending on the info, Martha. Please do keep us updated.

Hi Martha,

Thanks so much for keeping me updated with this!! I have to say though that after comparing the original gumball santa to stamp fransiscos version I too am not sure I would rush out to buy it. I think they are doing a fantastic job trying to recreate something without being "exact" (because of copyright ect) but I just dont like his mouth - it looks funny!! Maybe if they changed the shape of his mouth he might look a bit better!

As I said, thanks so much for keeping me updated - I am just so totally inlove with gumball graphics version I would love to see something so similar created and sell well!!

Cheers

Karen

I posted on the other thread about his mouth. At first glance, it looked like the artist left a hole there. It took awhile before I realized that it is his bottom lip showing through his beard, but it still doesn't look right. I don't like the shape of his eyes either.

I agree about the mouth, there's something not right. But, I do think that it is reasonably close and would probably buy it.

I too am not excited about the new version. Something about his beard looks off. I like how the original Santa's moustache curls up at the ends. Also, the new one's face is too wide.

Sorry, but having owned the original, I must say that SF's just don't compare. I guess I would have to say that the smaller postoid sizes (without the HO HO HO!) look best, simply because the flaws aren't as obvious....

I totally relate to everyone's issue with the mouth! It took me several looks before my brain would register that it's his bottom lip. And if you want something else a little crazy to look at, open the attachment again and look at the scary face in the eye on the left!

I'll agree that it's not quite the same as the other. There seems to be a twinkle in Santa's eye on the GG stamp that's just not there with this one...

Other than that, unless the stamp is just way overpriced, I will probably buy it...only because I don't think I'll win any bidding wars on ebay!

I think that SF has done a good job trying to duplicate the stamp although I don't think that they captured the real feel of the Gumball. I agree with the comments about the mouth. Is anyone else unsure about the double line under the nose. It looks to me like the rim of the glasses.

I've seen the images from gumball and they were great. But I understand that due to copyrights they can't duplicate the image exactly. So, not to make this look like the gumball image, but to make it one I would buy... I would offer these suggestions.

* Like others, do something with the mouth. At best, it looks like a pout.
* Turn the wrinkles on the sides if his eyes upward a bit. I think that will add the sparkle and make it seem as if Santa is smiling vs glowering.
* Remove the nasty jackolantern face in that eye (Musicmarth - hadn't noticed that till you pointed it out )
* To me the magic of the gumball image is that is seems like Santa is smiling right at the person viewing the card. This Santa seems to be looking off a bit - don't know if the direct gaze can be replicated.

What she said and I agree that there's some sort of twinkle in his eye -- almost as if he is winking at you. That's what makes the original stamp so fantastic!

That's one weird Santa! His eyes are messed up (they're not on the same plane or something) and I agree with the above posts about his lip. I think they are on the right track but he needs some serious tweaking. And a nose job.

I guess, I haven't seen the gumball one enough times to really compare, but I think this is a very cute stamp! I agree that maybe a more upturned mouth would be better, and maybe more of a direct look. And once you pointed out the jack a lantern in the eyeball, now I can't help but notice it! But, as long as it wasn't horribly overpriced, I'd buy it.

Ya - the mouth needs work - looks gross. And I agree that he needs to be made to look more *happy* - I saw the Gumball Santa and I loved it - he looked like he was looking right at me and the twinkle in his eye was priceless (as is the stamp sadly )

Check out River City Rubber Works. They have a really nice up close Santa face on there that you can get mounted or unmounted. Some of you might like him...the unmounted version is $5.00.

Hello

I would like to thank Martha for posting our prototype Santas and for creating a poll and to thank everyone who offered positive criticism. I just came back
from a meeting with the artist and he's going back to the drawing table to implement all the suggestions posted on this wonderful website.

If you are all game for it we will upload the new version (done from scratch)
next Saturday (We are to receive the drawing on Friday). We will welcome any feedback you are willing to share with us.

Thank you again and best wishes for 2006.

I love the postoid ones. They are all really great! The gumball graphics one is the better one in the larger size, however. I do agree with the others on that. I think it's cool that they responded here! Can't wait to see what they come up with!

The mouth IS horrid. That was the first thing I noticed when I looked at this stamp. I didn't notice the jack-0-lantern in the eye until I read the post. Now that is all you see when you look into his eye(s). I don't think I would purchase this stamp with the mouth this way.

I really like the one from gumbal graphics. I have never heard of them before, where can you find them? I have been searching the web with no luck. I don't care for the other one. Kerry

Kerry, Gumball Graphics went out of business several years ago. That's why it's so hard to find the stamp. I sold mine not long ago for $50, but they've gone for much higher on ebay, lol!

To Catherine from Stamp Fransisco,

Catherine, thanks so much for taking all our input onboard - we really appreciate you giving us all a sneek preview of your design, and I for one really wish you all the best with producing a gorgeous stamp that many of us Splitcoast stampers will want to order!! I live in Australia, but can tell you that I for one would order from you if you could come "close" to gumball graphics santa and I also know of quite a few other aussie women who would to!!

Stampin hugs to you!

Aussie Karen

Ok so how cool is this that Catherine would even WANT OUR OPINIONS???

There is an overall warmth that is missing from the SF image....and I believe that if the artist can capture that he will have captured the spirit of the Gumball Santa....

Catherine, I'm so glad you "found" us! And how exciting to be able to help with the creating of a new, beautiful stamp!

I suppose since the artist is starting over on the drawing, looking at the first attachment isn't going to do any good.

However, this will bump this thread for all that are interested in seeing the revised version this weekend!

ITA ~ the Stamp Francisco one looks a little creepy. And I don't know that I'm wild about any ANY company trying to copy another company's art. We wouldn't want SU to do that to another company, would we?

I agree with you Tasha, it will also maybe stop people being able to sell the Gumball Graphics one at extortionate prices. I think Betsy got a fair price at $50, but getting on for $100 is a bit much.
I also don't think it is copying as such. Have you seen Hero Arts version of SU's Wonderful Words or Curvy Verses, they are so close?
There are also seem to be trends in stamping where everyone produces similar but not identical stamps.
If Stamp Francisco can get the face right, I will definitely be interested in buying it.

A few years back, I went through the same frustrating search trying the find this manufacturer. When when I finally found out they went out of business, I tried to find a Santa that was somewhat similar. I came across a Santa from "Stamp It" that I used for my 2002 cards. Here's the link if you're interested...
www.stampit.com
Look in the Christmas section on page 8. This pic really doesn't do it justice though, so here's a sample I found posted on another site:

Thank you all for your continued feedback.

The reason we've decided to design a stamp similar in design is due to the name confusion.

Gumbo Graphics, one of our lines, goes back to the early days of mail art/rubber stamping and is a well established and well-known line.

Gumball Graphics was a newer company, in business few years and now out of business.

As one can see the names are phonetically similar leading to the mass
confusion... we've been getting hundreds of emails regarding this stamp
based on the name similarity.

Whether the similarity was intended by the newer company or not, we are having to respond time and time again to that particular inquiry and as a result (and we did wait quite a few years) we will have such an image.

From what I've gathered on this list we are not alone with such a Santa, though no one else has been inundated with inquiries year after year based on such an identity mix up.

So please try to understand that we are trying to turn a nuisance into something beneficial for both our customers and our company.

Catherine
BTW - This year we will re-plate all of the Gumbo Graphics images. They had to be cleaned up with modern technology (Photoshop), still need to be sized and will be digitally exported to our magnesium plates engraver. We will upload them on the new site as we make progresses.

Thanks, Catherine!

And it's not like they are copying the other stamp. The artist is obviously talented...but what artist wants to just recreate something that's already been done? He'd rather put his own personal touch on it (just like a painter, musician, actor, etc). So, even then, I don't think the stamp artwork will come out exactly like the Gumball Graphic one.

And it's Santa...not exactly a copyrighted concept...

It's not unusual at all to 'semi' duplicate an image. Stamp companies do it all the time. There are many images that people tend to identify with Magenta stamps that are also available from several other manufacturers. These would be mainly vintage images, like this santa, that are in the public domain.

Companies will take a vintage image, clean it up, and copyright that cleaned up image, not the original image. Anybody else can come along and do the same thing. And, as somebody else mentioned, styles are copied back and forth among stamp companies, always driven by the latest trend.

I think it would be great if SF could come up with a good rendition. I'm one who just sold my Gumball graphics stamp, and I miss it, lol. But if somebody was willing to pay that much for it, then I just couldn't afford to not sell it. I'd be perfectly happy to use a good knock off, if it had the same character that the Gumball one has.

I agree with the previous posts about his mouth and his eyes. I am very happy that Stamp Franciso is listening. To be that is great customer relations.

I know that I will probably purchase the new stamp if they can mimick the same type of warmth that was exuded from the gumball graphics one. The prototypes I didn't care for much. I'm looking forward to seeing the latest version.
