some use cut down cereal boxes or paper tubes or other things,do you decorate them into a theme or just as is?is it distracting or does it just seem to be personal tastes?did you decorate as you accumulate or did you wait and buy all the paper at one time.sorry if this question seems common sense but i ran into issues with my using the cereal boxes as is for right now so am hoping for guidance.

I use cut down cereal boxes as book covers for envelope or mini books and I cover them with decorative paper first...is that what you mean? For chipboard embellishments you can cover with paper, paint, or whatever you want.
If I am recycling, I do as Dini says, and cover them first.
If I am repurposing, I will paint with gesso and maybe stamp if I have time. I use shoe boxes for loads of things. Some I will totally decorate and make strong, others just paint. I use some tubes for knitting needles and put cross stitches on them. lol.
i apologize for not being specific/and recycling is the terminology but i also should have said using for organizing supplies.you slowly accumulate the needed sizes and do you decorate one at a time or wait till you have them all and do at one time?
or as one suggested paint with gesso and stamp?

I recycle or repurpose a lot of things. As far as using stuff for organizing my craft supplies, I tend to use storage containers "as is."
Everyone is different in how they feel about the way their things are organized and displayed. I am always amazed when I see comments that someone did not buy a tool they wanted because it was not the "right color" and they didn't think it would look good in their craft room.
My craft room is not for public view, and I am mostly the only one who goes into the room. I only care about function, and not so much about how it looks. So I don't take the time to decorate or alter my containers.

thanks for the replies.i was having issues because it looked like i would have to pre-estimate the paper to cover everything and decorate it as i go along.i really think of this as my room and if it doesnt match that is fine until it blocks creativity then i can adjust then.and agreed on tools.so i have given myself permission to use "as is".
LOL

I kind of cheat - instead of decorating each cardboard tube, I find a box that they can stand in and just cover the outside of that. I don't use my good stash, though - mostly brown kraft wrapping paper. Just something to cover up any writing.
What I love about recycling boxes, jars, cans.....it comes out unique...I have had other family members and friends asked where I got the container from????
You should see their face when I tell them what it was....got it love it....and I usually paint my boxes with paint or use stamp all over them; one want to see what it looks like and two to see if the stamped image comes out the way I want it to look
That makes more sense! Yes, give yourself permission to do what you want to do... I have most of my supplies in cracker tins, tin cans, chipped mugs, large plastic candy jars, etc. and none of them are covered. I do have one little file box that I made from 2 cereal boxes, and I did cover that with paper, maybe more to hold it together with something other than tape..
Speaking of this exact thing...I just am about to refurbish a Viactiv container. I am going to cover it with decorative paper, then cut out an oval shaped decorative paper for the top plastic lid. I will get it all glued on, then I am going to punch a hole in the lid to add a flower or something. I can then use it for a gift, as wrap, or store things in.
Every surface is a canvass to me. lol. I never think of using my "stash" as a "waste" on anything. A few people have seen my stuff and wanted one like it, and I just give it to them. Shoe boxes are aplenty around here because my daughter has caught "Imelda" disease since she works in a store that sells shoes and not everyone wants the boxes. lol.
I do both, depending on the mood or time. I have markers/pencils in round nut containers (the ones that have metal bottoms & pop-off tops and cardboard sides & a plastic cover). I use a can opener to remove the remainder of the pull-off lid and usually discard the plastic cover. I have one container decorated, one with the label removed, but not decorated, and one with the label still intact. I tend to have a more practical approach and a fancy or pretty container certainly isn't necessary to do the job. Although, I know that shelves of pretty containers would be wonderful to look at.
I'm working on organizing a room for my stamping (very slow going) and once that is done, I might be more likely to decorate recycled containers. For now, though, it's just not going to happen
I bought a roll of wallpaper that has the colours of my room in it. 1: there's lots on the roll, 2: everything matches, 3: you can use it on just about everything!
I like to find wall paper borders in the sale bin at Lowes, or Home Depot. It's such a nice width for many of the things we want to cover. Also, I got a couple of discontinued wall paper books. Those pages make amazing envelopes! I should do more of this, but there's always tomorrow. LOL

I bought several rolls of contact paper in a cream color and cover most of the cardboard boxes I use for storage. They serve as "drawers" and to hold rolls of paper etc. I like the clean look that it makes. For smaller recycled containers, I use neutral/natural colored wall paper samples. I keep postage stamps, small desk items--erasers, clips, pins, etc.--in them. When I give such things as gifts, I always cover them with either lovely wall paper or designer paper and never think of it as being wasted. I have truly beautiful furniture that my DH built for my craft room, so I don't want to distract from that with my storage containers.

I just use things the way they come. I'm not a neat and tidy person, and unless I'm trying out a particular project, I don't use up my supplies on my containers. One of my favourite things to re-use (we're not recycling, we're re-using) is the plastic containers that I sometimes get with salad greens. I have ribbons, adhesives, decorative scissors, all kinds of things sorted into these boxes. They are clear, which is a bonus for me. I'm the type that forgets what's inside a box that I can't see through!
I keep WIP in the salad plastic containers....to contain...all project elements and small tools together. I keep ribbon and punchies needed for the project together.
I like that I can see thru, because I am always looking for something...somewhere.
I have covered the tin Market District tea containers and kept silk flower buds in them --adding one to the top of each tin to show me what is inside. Also, I share product with my sister -- because we both know we will not use ALL of something like Flower Soft. To do this without making a huge mess and to ship easily, I saved Eclipse 60 count gum containers with the little flip tops. She can see what is inside the clear tops and decorate as she wishes. Also, it looks like she will be able to shake out just what is needed and then dump the extras back and the Flower Soft will stay FLUFFED! I have made business card carrier templates out of other gum 'boxes' and stored embellishments in plastic flip top staple boxes (the kind you find in an office). The possibilities are endless; I just dont like to toss something that can be re-purposed!

I'm hoarding a bunch of Viactiv boxes, I agree, they'll be fun to alter! (And DH takes their multi-vitamins, so I have a slow but steady supply)

I do agree with you last statement, but I still like my craftroom to look cosy

Same here, and not only that, but pretty. If there is a rather gaudy or ugly-looking tool, I simply house it in a beautiful basket or slide it in a drawer. That way I can have my nice looking room and tools as well. It just makes me feel good to walk into my well-appointed and handsome craft room and create.
Lucky girl!! I wished I had more of them!! They will be fun for you to decorate!! Try and post a picture after you've done one! I want to see what you did!

One reason I could never make everything match is because I am often reorganzing my collections of things as my supplies grow and change. I outgrow and relabel containers as I gather more supplies. Athough, after 17 years of stamping, I pretty much have everything I need, but I do add stamps and embellishments as the years go on. It's such a shame because when I walk into a craft store with a coupon, the thing I often use it on is just adhesive.

Oh how true. The last 5 coupons at Michael's were used on adhesive tape and rubber cement. Good thing I use a lot of it!
