I have a question... for as long as I can remember I was told that the craft ink pads (pigment ink pads) should be stored basically upside down so that the foam pad is hanging? make sense? Does this still hold true?
and also remember the spectrum pads ?? (Kaleidacolor) the same thing.. upside down??
I could be wrong (usually am!!!)but I think you have it backwards. Dye ink pads need to be upside down however craft/pigment ink and spectrum pads are to be stored rightside up. Maybe someone will back me up?!?!?!?
I store all my dye inks upside down, and my craft ones face up. Mine are so juicy and wet they would leak. I have re-inkers for all my pads, so I don't worry about it. I hardly ever have to re-ink, but for the soft pastels, as they seem to need it more.
I store my ink pads on their side in a shallow drawer except my Distress ones. i have a problem with the Distress lids coming off. I have never had any problems with them drying out quickly. I have pigment, chalk and dye.
I have a problem with my distressing inks lids coming off too! I wish they were a little better designed. But I love distressing inks so I guess it works out.
I store my Stampin' Up inks, right side up (label side up).
I wish the Distress ink pads had a lid that I could grip better. Sometimes the lid comes off easily other times the lid goes one way and the ink pad goes another. I least the pad hasn't landed in my lap or on my card stock.
Dye ink pads stored upside down so the ink will stay near the top of the felt; spectrum or Kaleidocolor pads contain dye-based ink and so should be stored upside down. All others right side up because the formulation of the ink allows it to stay suspended in the foam pads.

Way back when I started stamping, like 1994 or so, the dye ink pads benefited from being stored upside down. It helped them stay juicy. Pigment ink pads, which were not the same felt material, didn't require this.
Then I heard from manufacturers several years later that their processes had improved and that storing pads upside down was unnecessary.
These days I just store them flat. If one is getting dry and I don't have a reinker, I will store it upside down, just to let gravity have its way. I have had pads that were stored on their sides leak every so often, so I don't like to tempt fate anymore. One year I an order from my distributor with some Ranger Big and Juicy pads in it. Even though they were shrink-wrapped, a couple of them got tossed around in the box, and when I opened the box, there was a HUGE mess of purple ink all over everything. Yuck, lol!
For the most part, I think you can just store them however it works for you. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
