Can you heat emboss on watercolor paper?

I tried it, but did not get a good image, cause of the texture of the paper. I wonder if my stamp pad was not juicy enough, or this always happens with this paper. Thanks!

there are 2 kinds of watercolor paper. the bumpier kind is cold press. You can emboss but it is difficult to get into all the bumps. make sure your ink pad is juicy.

or, you can buy the much more expensive smooth hot press watercolor paper...

You can also try using the back side of the cold press watercolour paper. Most often, the back side is a lot smoother (or less textured - which ever way you want to look at it ).

I agree with cat_woman, I often use the back of my cold press. And I have rarely had trouble with embossing, unless it's a very detailed image.

I prefer to use hot press. EP likes to stick to cold press regardless which side I use. They seem to have static, even the anti-static pouch doesn't help. Some of the brands available are just too thick.

I heat emboss water colour paper almost daily and I use 140lb cold press water colour paper (Strathmore brand with the brown cover or 90lb cold press Canson brand). I haven't had problems embossing on it but you might want to look for either cold press or hot press with a minimal tooth or texture - just open up the tablets and run your hand along the paper. If it's too rough then you will have a hard time stamping/embossing the paper. I also use versafine inks with clear detail embossing powder and an embossing buddy to get a clearly stamped image.

Thank you so much for asking this; I never even thought about this being an issue with embossing. So good to know! I'll have to remember to try it on the smoother side if I emboss on it.

I realize this is an old post, but I need help!!!! I emoboss some water color paper but when I went to do the whole water color effect, a lot of the embossing came off...I did it 3 different times and it did it all three times. I think I heated it enough so not sure what happened....anyone with any ideas please please pass it on!!!! thanks

that's weird! I usually stamp my image with black versafine, emboss it with clear EP and then I water color the image... never had the embossing coming off.
What paper/ink did you use? What kind of technique did you use for water color effect? Was the embossed image solid before you started playing with water?

i just used some water color paper from HL, used versamark, and white detailed embossing powder. the design was a flower (hero arts stencil flower stamp) I put down distress ink of several colors and then sprayed with shimmer mist (lots of shimmer mist ) any way while there was some pools of water I took a paint brush to try and "mush" the colors better and that is when the powder started coming off...embossing powder doesn't go bad does it???? thanks so much!!!

I don't think it would go bad.. I have some of mine for 5-6 years and have no problems with them... The only thing that comes to my mind is that is wasn't heated/melted enough.. maybe somebody else will have another idea

Some embossing powder does indeed have a "shelf life" and goes off over time. You could test whether the powder might be to blame by heat embossing with it on regular cardstock if you haven't already tried that.

Seeing white on white can be difficult so it could just be that the powder wasn't melted properly. Try holding your heat gun under the paper and melting that way - it will take a little longer but you can generally see what's going on better because the gun isn't in the way or providing a distraction for your eyes.

I agree with Angelnorth. I've had to throw away a few jars of embossing powder because they just wouldn't melt well. Some will "go bad."

I was shocked this year when I had some embossing powder that went bad. It was only 1 jar out of the many jars of 'good' embossing powder that I have that are 10+ years old, but I can confirm from that experience that yes, embossing powder can go bad. That 'bad' jar would not stick to the embossing ink (Versamark) at all.

That said, I emboss on watercolor paper for images that I watercolor and have no issues (other than maybe the technique I'm trying doesn't look good when I do it LOL).

Try it with and without the Shimmer Mist on a scrap piece of the same type paper and see if there is a difference. May be chemicals that prevent adherance or the paper was too wet after applying so much of it.

As long as I use Versafine ink, I always get a good image, even on cold press watercolour paper.

Embossing the image gives you a nice raised boundary that helps keep your watercolour paint inside the edges of the image.

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking it had to do with being sure the ink/stamped image would not bleed. I haven't had problems with that, as I usually use Versafine or Archival Ink. I never think of embossing, because I think of watercolor as sort of free form, and therefore one of the times you are ok coloring outside the lines . I will need to remember to emboss the image if I am using a lot of water and want my coloring precise. Thanks again.

Sprinkle on baby powder, leave it for 2 minutes then brush it off. It likely isn't static but oils from someone's hands or moisture from the air that have soaked in and attacts the EP.

It's not the embossing powder. It's because you soaked your paper so much that the water soaked into the paper around the embossing and down under it then it lifted the embossing off. Once the paper is that wet the embossing can't hold on anymore. This has happened to me too. If you add that much water and don't touch the embossing, it will still hold but even the slightest touch while that went and it slides right off. If you do this with regular Cardstock, you will see that with a bit of water, the embossed area will stay dry (look at the back). Add more and the embossed lines will start to fill in. Watercolour paper is too thick to see this from the back but it still happens. Keep the powder, its fine!
