I'm curious......when you sit down to design a card......maybe a non-specific event, I just wanna stamp card.......do you start by stamping/coloring your image first? or pick out background paper/design first? or design a card around your favorite ribbon/embelishments? Or all of the above/none of the above? Which happens most often? Will be fun to read what everyone else does! :-)
If it's an "I just wanna stamp" card (which rarely happens, unfortunately!!), then it usually depends on what new toy I've recently gotten and haven't yet played with!! I start out with the new thing, or base my card around a technique/stamp set/accessory that I want to include.
What do you do?

I guess I did forget to put what I do......
I USED to (pre-Splitcoast) have a complete card pictured in my mind before I would even start the card.......now I usually stamp the image first and design the rest later.....kinda frees me up to do whatever ideas pop into my mind. I have learned so MUCH from everyone here at Splitcoast and every time I browse the gallery, I get the URGE to make something!
It also depends on if I have new "stuff" or not If I have a new background, I'll use that, if it's new focal images, then I use those. I don't usually start with the embellishment though.
I look through my catalog of stamps, pick mine out. Then I go for the papers and colors. Sometimes I will get out 2-3 different assortments to choose from. Then I just go for it!
If I get a special idea, I rarley have time to do it, so I write it down for later.

Ohhhh, I LIKE the idea of writing it down for later!!
Ohhhh, I LIKE the idea of writing it down for later!!
This is a vicious cycle! I write lots down for later, and then I have a situation like now where I have a million ideas I want to try but when I go to sit down and stamp, I usually have a more pressing type of card that needs to be done (like a certain birthday card, mother's day card, etc)... One day when I find time to sit down and just do it, I have a bunch of ideas lined up anyways!

Most often I colour in the image first and then pick my background papers based on what highlights the image best. If it isn't an image I'm planning on colouring in, I will select the colours for my matting first & then decide what colour to stamp & emboss the image with (because there is ALWAYS embossing!). If, however, I found a nifty new ribbon or embellishment, then that will be the inspiration for the whole design.
Okay ... so I do all 3!

I usually start with the stamped image and go from there. Sometimes I get an idea popping into my head when I pick out the set and sometimes I just play and come up with something.

That just makes too much sense!
I'm ENJOYING reading how you all create!
I usually find a card in the Splitcoast gallery, then try to duplicate it with what I have. :-) Sometimes I change the color scheme, or the layout, or the specific embellishment.
I guess when I'm doing my own creating, I start with a layout, then decide which color family suits my card. Then I choose images, backgrounds, embellishments to suit my mood.

For me, I will sit down with an idea of what I want to do, and then the card will take off with a mind of its own, and it usually ends up being somthing completely different then what I thought I was going to do. Other times, it turns out exactly like I had pictured, but more often then not it just evolves in my hands. I just had to learn to trust myself
100% Image first. I design the rest of the card around what I stamped. That's why patterned paper is so hard for me to use. Because then I have to start with the background paper.
I have no rhyme or reason. It all depends on the mood. I think that the only time I make something just for the sake of making something, is because I have something new to play with so I start from there.
My paper choice is usually after the image choice. Embellishment come last for me because sometimes what you think will go great doesn't see to fit when you get near the end of the project.

I almost always start with the colors of cs that I want to use. A lot of the time I see a card here and jot down the colors used, go home and get them all out and make a card from the color inspiration. I have to do this or every card I make will turn out pixie pink and close to cocoa!
Very interesting to see what everyone else does!

Wow, learning to trust yourself....what a concept! I THINK I'm starting to do that but wish I was better at it!
I'm learning things from you all!!
