I used the bone folder to sharpen the fold once I have made the fold in a card,, it also helps make the card lay flat and it saves my thumb. I also use it to flatten brads on the back so they will lay flatter when i layer my papers.

PC scraper i guess would work, but it has a thinner edge so may nick your paper or cause a mark, where the bone fiolder is thinker angled and smoother. Love my bone folder, I use it to make the initial fold, save my thumb especially when i am doing large amoutns of cards. Best $5 investment ever. IMO that is.
I also use my folder if I tape the bottom of a bix-the scraper will not reach in there but the rounded end will.
For scoring along the wheel guide (another great use for the wheel guide as the side of the plastic goes all the way down to the paper or surface you are using-woprks better than the raised ruler I had to use before) the bone folder pointed edge makes great scoring lines and I can hold it up high enough to not make my fingers interfere with the crease.
When I want to tear along a specific line but still want the ripped edge, I use the bone folder. I assume you can use teh scraper the same way, but I like the weight of SU's folder myself. I did use a customer's from teh craft store but it was lighter weight and ended up snapping on her (She must be freakishly strong! LOL)

i use my pampered chef scraper. I use it for folds. First folding the paper and then making the edge "crisp". I think they come 3 in a package for like $2.50. Best scraper on dishes also.....LOL!!
I have seen a couple of styles of bone folder in my area. One is ProvoCraft and looks a lot like a ruler except instead of both ends being squared off, one of them has a rounded taper to it. The other I've seen is at Michaels, where in addition to the rounded tapered end, there is some weirdo notch close to the other end of the bone folder. What is this notch for? And is it why the one at Michaels costs twice as much as the ProvoCraft folder?
I usually use a smooth-bladed butterknife to score my folds. I tried using the handle of the knife to make my folds lie flat, but I found it marked up my cardstock by making some areas shiny (kind of like it disturbed the knap of the paper).
Thank you for asking about bone folders! I always wondered why I should invest in one, and what makes one folder better than another.
I use my bone folder every time I make a project. I use it to make the crease when folding cards, and I also use it with my envelope template. Definitely can't live without it!!! Skip the scoring blade and use this handy item
In the UK we have scoring boards, I don't know if you have them in the US, but they are boards with recessed lines as shown on this website http://www.graphicus.co.uk/prodpage.asp?ProdID=1256 . You need a bone folder to push the card into the lines, but it means you can make accurate gate fold cards, concertina cards and you get a far more accurate fold when folding a card in half. I could not live without my scoring board and bone folder.
It is also brilliant for making card boxes, so if you have a layered card, it will fit in a box rather that getting squashed in an envelope. Over here you can send any shape or sized card ina box or envelope without paying more. It goes by weight.

I have this problem w/ my bone folder. Can anyone tell me how to prevent it? I do like the crisp edge it gives.

I use my bone folde for small items but for making the original crease to fold the cs, I use the attachment that came with my fiskars cutter. It is that little black 'thingy' that you put in the slot instead of the cutting part and it makes a wonderful, professional like crease.
