Those prismacolors are really difficult to sharpen. Even my employee's virile piano playing fingers gripped to a claw after only a few turns of the crank. Is there a good pencil sharpener for prismacolors that is electric. Or, if there's a turning one that's good for volume sharpening I'd be interested in that too.
Prismacolor makes their own sharpener for their pencils. I have used mine for years( this link is for the new one)
I have two electric sharpeners...one on each of my desks but I don't really use it a lot for my pencils ( except for the first time I sharpen them) becasue it will eat them up very quickly if you aren't careful.. Prismacolor Pencil Sharpener - BLICK art materials

I bought a really nice battery one at Staples for under $10 and it is wonderful! I have had for about 6 years and it makes a perfect pencil point every time!

I have the Prisma sharpener, a Dux and an electric sharpener. I use the electric if the pencil is broken or new, then use the Dux to get a finer point on them.
I used to have a hard time with sharpening too, the I learned from a Prisma video that sharpening with a regular graphite pencil in between a few prismas helps to kind of grease the gears.... it helps keep the pencil sharpener from getting waxy build up. It does really help. I have a tutorial on my blog that discusses sharpening in more detail if you are interested. Prisma tutorial
Someone told us to heat the pencils in the microwave or oven to melt the wax back together if you got one that kept breaking.
After trying about 5 different sharpeners, I bought the one that Inkin One posted the link for and I LOVE it. I kept having trouble with my electric one that had been recommended by someone here and the other manual ones I'd tried. This little one is especially nice because it has two different holes to sharpen with: one with the usual long, tapered angle and one that is not as long which is the side I use all the time. I can get a nice, sharp point that doesn't leave as much of the color exposed, so they don't break as easily. I rarely have any breakage anymore.

Jess, do you remember who that was?
I always wondered what we could do about those broken pencils. It would be great if we could melt them. Any tips on doing that?

Carole I don't remember who said that you could do that with the pencils( heating them)..I think it was in that LONG Prismacolor thread..lots of people swear by it so it must work. I have been fortunate and not had to do it...

Some artists have reported success in mending a colored pencil with broken lead by microwaving it or heating it in a conventional oven at 325 F / 160 F for 2-5 minutes. If you do this, be careful and don't overcook the colored pencil! Also, don't heat colored pencils en masse. Rather than cook them as a preventative measure, only do it when a pencil already suffers from broken lead.
Alternatively, some artists report that freezing colored pencils make them easier to sharpen. Your best bet is to try both approaches to see which works best for you.
A small metal sharpener came with my set of 48 Prismas but I also ordered the bullet style sharpener that Prismacolor makes.
I actually prefer the small metal one as I think it sharpens better. I like that I can see the point as I sharpen, as sometimes I don't need a really sharp point.
I don't think the small one is sold separately, but comes in one of their accessory sets.

It just goes to show what works for one, may not work for another. I have that one and I do not have any luck with it. I have had my DUX for gosh 15 years or so and I love it.
yup, this is perfect. produces very very sharp point very easily. or you can just turn it once if you don't want sharp. LOVE this baby. (no affiliation)
