Okay, so a friend/customer of mine wanted me to put together a list for her of stamping must haves for beginners. It's been so long for me, I just can't remember what I started with. I have a pretty good sized list, but I want to make sure I haven't let off anything really important. Here is my list:
paper cutter WITH SCORING BLADE
bone folder
mono
ZIG ballpoint glue ( I love that stuff)
eyelet setter
watercolor pencils or crayons
aqua painter
stampin scrub
stampin mist
heat tool & embossing powder
glossy cardstock (cause you can never have enough)
ruler
pop dots
foam tape
scissors
versamark
various inks and papers (including craft pads)
hole punch
stazon (black)
stampamajig
I just feel that I have left something important off the list. Any suggestions?
(I know I left stamps off the list, hehe, she has plenty of those to get started!!)

Inks? How about the spots if she is just getting started. Sponges. (You can always sponge a color to give dimension if you don't have that colored cardstock. If you have the heat tool on your list, then you need embossing powder (and either versamark or craft pads), oh yeh, versamark.

versamark!! See! I left several somethings off my list.
I am hoping she is smart enough to know she needs inks and papers (although I have met a couple of people who just didn't seem to get it, maybe I shouldn't assume).
How about a stamp-a-ma-jig. At first I didnt have one and I could never get anything lined up ... and then when I tried it I wished I had had it from the beginning! I think it is a must have for a beginer, so they dont get frustrated trying to line things up. That's just my opinion.
Would you need the scoring blade if you had a trimmer and a bone folder? ;)
I personally have stopped using my scoring blades and just use my bone folder and the cutting groove in my Fiskars.

PS...I don't use a scoring blade either. I use my stylus to make the crease and then use the bone folder when the card is folded to get a really sharp fold.

I think this list is too long for a beginner. I personally think she could wait on the eyelet setters, heating tools, embossing powders,pop dots,foam tape and glossy cardstock. I think she should get the hang of basic stamping and card design down before venturing off to other techniques. You can build up all your stuff as you go along. JUST MY OPINION It's a little overwhelming when you are just starting!

I am going to suggest to her that she come use my goodies before buying her own for things like the heat tool , etc. I think that will give her a happy medium. She will have her necessities and access to the extras. She's really gung-ho about this, and is anxious to really get going...I like infecting people with the stamping bug!!

I think this is a great compromise! I know myself and my friends don't all like to do the same techniques. Some never emboss, some never use eyelets. So buying everything right off the get go often turns out to be a waste of money. Better to try stuff and find your style and then invest in what you really use!

I would agree with this. If I was just considering this as a new hobby. I think this list would make me say nevermind. I now own tons of stuff, but I started with a multipack of paper, a few ink pads, mono, and 2 stamp sets. I soon invested in a paper cutter, bone folder, and scrub and mist. It took me a while to spend thousands. It comes when you're hooked.
I thought that the kits they brought out at the front of the 05-06 catalog were a great idea for beginners. They were too late for me, but I thought that was a stroke of genius for people who are overwhelmed by the big catalog!
