Question Moving Survival Kit???

I have a dear friend/co-worker who announced today that she is moving to Portland, Oregon. I want to make her a Moving Survival Kit in a Gallon Size Paint Can...

Any ideas of what to put inside? And... how would you decorate the outside?

I know y'all have plenty of ideas.

Bren!

You could make her some change of address cards (using Right at Home or Loads of Love)to send out once she's moved and a book of stamps.

I have this following site bookmarked: http://www.sawyers-specialties.com/s...nts/moving.php and this is the info:

Moving Kit

Phone card - To stay in touch

Postcard or notecard, preaddressed - So they can write you from their new home

Small address book - to keep addresses of old friends and new..and for email addies

Hugs and kisses - To remind them that you care

Kleenex - For drying eyes when they miss all their old friends

Change of address cards?

Map- Maybe with the route highlighted?

Return address labels with new address

Photo of giver or group of friends

Puzzle piece- Things just aren't the same without them

A picture of their old house - "Always remember where you came from"

If she is going on a road trip to her new destination...here's an idea. When I moved from NJ to MN, a friend gave me a gift basket loaded with single serving snacks...cookies, crackers, bottled water, etc. We were driving a uhaul and it came in so handy...many times a snack or water held us until we had a better place to stop.

definitely some baby wipes or something like that. You get so dirty moving and it is nice to have something to clean your hands off once in a while - sometimes you aren't close to a restroom or water.

The best thing I ever, ever got in a moving basket was pain reliever. Aching back, feet, and head from being on your feet all day long. I have moved A LOT being an air force brat and now married to an air force dh. I say go with tylenol or advil!!!!

One of my favorite change-of-address cards is made from a map of the new neighborhood and printed on cardstock with a star marking the new home location. I made them into postcards to help save some money on stamps.

Another addition/idea is a small album for the new house. The one I was given has photos of each of our homes (military family). The one I am currently working on (well, "currently" means it is sitting on my craft table giving me dirty looks for not paying it more attention over the last 8 months!) is made of the large paint swatches found at Lowes/H. Depot on a ring. I plan to add photos and journaling on the reverse side highlighting our trip cross-country, the move, the unpacking and eventually all the home improvements. Super cheap album (love free paint swatches) and perfect for the paint can.

A friend gave us this book as a moving gift along with a local yellow pages wrapped up in packing twine - it's perfect to keep track of a new home and would be a great addition to the can:

And thanks to everyone else in the thread - great ideas!

If they are making a road trip of it, you should decorate the outside of the paint can with an old map!

I wouls add a can opener. I kow it may sound silly but it can be such a blessing with three hungry kids and not wanting to stop unpacking.

OK this may sound silly, but is VERY practical. I think you shouls include a roll of tp. Something that is NEVER in the new place, or in public restrooms on the road. When we have someone new move in to our neighborhood, I always bring over a bottle of wine with a roll of tp on top.

I'd add a pkg of those therma care heat wraps. Great for soothing sore muscles after lifting heavy boxes, or even bengay.

We just moved and some things we kept running out of was TP, papertowels and plastic cups. All were extremely handy and used a lot! We ate out a lot the first few days so gift cards for food would be great as well! Are you using a 5 gal paint can?

I've made change of address cards as a gift and bought the postcards at the post office that already have the postage. It saved a step of either putting postage stamps on myself or my friend having to do it.

I second imataloss's suggestion of a roll of tp, and if you're up to a 5-gallon bucket yet, add a roll of paper towels.

I'd also add some zip-loc bags to hold the little parts that come loose, don't get packed where they belong, or are found on the floor during the final sweep; put in a roll of masking tape, a Sharpie, and some 3x5 cards for labels either in the bags or on boxes or other items.
