Red face Moment of realization

Has this ever happened to you???
I was telling someone at work today that I was in the process of cataloging all of my stamps and what a big project it has turned into. This "Non-Stamping" co-worker of mine sarcastically said, "You have that much crap that you have to catalog it because you don't know what you have?"
Sympathizing that she had no clue about the "needs" of a stamper, I proceeded to try and explain. Of course she walked away shaking her head:rolleyes:

After I thought about what she said, I came home and looked around. Then it hit me! (It was one of those moments like when you look in the mirror and realize you've become your mother) OMG!:o
So now I'm sitting here wondering how all this stuff got in here! (I know, I know...the mailbox and the shopping bags) LOL!
Please share your "realization" moments with me...

Just yesterday I was telling someone that I enjoy shopping for rubber stamps better than I like shopping for clothes. Then it hit me, I have more rubber stamps than clothes; let alone all the other stuff that I need to use WITH the rubber stamps, etc. When I have play money, my first thought is to stamps, not clothes.

The question to ask yourself do you or will you use the stuff? We all have different hobbies, and when someone isn't like minded in our hobby, they think all the stuff we have for our hobby is "crap".

What does your coworker do in her spare time? You could say the same about her hobby if it wasn't something that you were interested in.

Just take a deep breath and when you are organizing all of your stamping stuff you can decide if you are going to use it or not.. and go from there

Good Luck

Oh, I KNOW what you mean.
I'd rather shop for stamp/craft stuff than clothes too!

So much so, that when my mom came to visit me, she said she needed to go to Kohls for clothes and she wanted me to go with her to help. "Help her pick out clothes?" I figured OK, I only see her once or twice in a year. Some mom bonding time away from the husbands should be nice.... The clothes were for me. She paid for everything and on the way out said "When we get to your house, please throw the old rags out, I don't want to see you wearing them anymore."
Good 'ol mom thought I simply couldn't afford clothes! I couldn't bare to tell her that I was choosing to spend money on new stamps.

I'm in the middle of moving into a new house, and my realization moment came yesterday. There is so much I want and so much I have that I don't use. I need to get rid of the stuff I bought that I don't really want or use and go buy out the store of the stuff I want now!!! I mean...wait a minute...

I always choose stamps over clothes!

I'm also seven months pregnant ... and all my stamps still fit ;)

My father-in-law said that I have too much time on my hands when he saw my son's birthday card. I said, "It's this or medication."

Default Aha.

My "...aha..." moment hit me when the bags started being left out in the open and I got sloppy with receipts. Further reason being that all of my "...stash spots..." are crammed with who only knows what.

Sooooo...I'm clearing out myself right now and -- as usual! -- trying to get organized. Perhaps thinning out a bit will make it easier. ~ kbc

My moment of realization was when my DH unloaded FOURTEEN 20-gallon rubbermaid type totes full of stamps, scrapbooks, paper, markers/ink and other accessories as well as stuff to stamp ON or alter like tins and boxes - all for crafting.

When I packed it up to move it it was over days, so I never saw how much there was. However, 14 boxes put in a corner of the cellar, DH told me and I refused to believe him, insisting he was exaggerating. Went down and sure enough, 14 boxes.

It was then that I realized holy cow it isn't all going to fit in my craft room - closet or not!! I was truly in the belief that having a craft room (the laundry room is it) with a closet I would fit it ALL in there. DH told me no way would it all fit. Now sadly I believe him!! Have to shop for more shelves this summer!

No doubt...stamps will win over clothes anytime. My husband calls stamping "pornography" because I spend so much time looking at SCS and magazines, etc. I think as long as things are not totally out-of-control and I'm using the stuff...it's all good.

I did have a panicky moment a couple of days ago when I saw two or three ladies on the BST selling all their stash because they were getting out of stamping. I suddenly wondered if it would ever come to that for me and then I thought about the fact that my husband would probably kill me if I ever gave up stamping as I could never recoup my investment so I guess I'm in this for the long haul, it's been an interesting ride so far.

This is such a fun thread to read. I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one that love stamp and craft shopping more that clothes shopping.

My stamping/scrapping room is in our "office". My DH has one side, and I have the other. His side is full of Nascar memorabilia, and mine is, well, you know!!
I know I have way too much stuff, but I'm always looking for more!

My DIL is having a garage sale in the am with over 50 sets of SU, so OF COURSE I'll have to stop in the am, first thing!

My DH never says anything about how much stuff I have though, as he is into Radio Control car racing, and he himself, has tons of stuff!!

Plus I buy my own!! At least other people get enjoyment out of my cards and scrapbooks, and sometimes I even make a little money at it!!

BTW, I have 2 Cuttlebugs! Figuring out what to do with the other!!

Yesss!!! I remember that moment well - *face to face with my mother in the mirror*, it about knocked the breath outta me!!! It took a loooong time to come to terms with it too!!
BUT... I LOVE my stampin' and WILL NOT give it up. I may have too much stuff but, by George, its MINE and I'll use it when and if I get good and ready!! I don't give a diddly dang WHO walks away shakin' their head. I can feel sorry for them tho, they just don't know the happiness and satisfaction I get from my hobby.
May God bless, Sandi

I usually work from home and now I'm back in the office and when I started to get dressed for work I realized that I had very few work clothes. I have 14 pairs of sweats and a ton of "crafting t-shirts" all of which have some sort of glue, glitter, ink, or paint stains. It was then that I realized how bad I had gotten for trading clothes $$ for stamping. I now have a stop-buy for anything stamp related for at least one month, but I'm going to try for longer.

I think that if Mikes sold clothes my wardwrobe would have been better. Wonder the brand name would be: all that glitters?

Absolutely hilarious!!

My husband told me the next time he gets a bonus from work, he is going to give me some of it, but on the condition that I HAVE to buy at least one outfit and not to spend it all on stamp/craft stuff.

So funny that you should bring this up! Just today I was thinking about jumping in my car and driving to a LSS with nothing specific in mind to buy. To talk myself out of spending money and wasting gas, I started a list and actually wrote out:

I do not need stamps (tons I’ve never used)
I do not need cardstock (I have stacks)
I do not need DP (even more stacks)
I do not need embellishments ( I have containers full)
I do not need cuttlebug dies/folders ( I have some on order right now)

I felt like a kid writing on the blackboard. It actually worked for awhile but I may have to keep the list posted where I can constantly see it!

Oh Melissa, I LOVE your response!!!! You go, girl! People who don't stamp just don't get it...I've heard people say "why would I spend all that money and time to make a card when I can buy one for a dollar?" Oh, you sad sad people...it's like those who don't have pets can't understand how those of us with pets can get so attached to them...you just can't explain it and it's probably not worth the effort to try!

I'm not sure if I've had my "moment of realization" yet but maybe it should be that, if we have any guests stay in our "guest room" they will not have any room in the closet because that's where all my stamping stuff is! (plus a bunch of clothes I haven't lost enough weight to fit back into yet!).

My husband has a saying:
We don't drink, we don't smoke, we don't do drugs, we don't hunt, we don't fish, we don't golf, we don't go on cruises..... He tells people that because our recreation is eating out (I very seldom cook).....and my recreation is stamping! And I agree with Lucie: my cards make some people smile and that's important! We could have much, much worse habits/hobbies!!

Like most others here, I hate clothes shopping but love shopping for stamps!

I was talking with a co-worker the other day when a catalog for garden stuff caught his eye. He picked it up, pointed to a picture of a garden gnome, and said "Hey, you could stamp something like this and colour it!" and I very happily said "Yes, I can!!". He looked very surprised because he had been joking. He said "You really have a stamp of a garden gnome?!!" and I again very happily said I do indeed (Knobbly Gnomes). He said "you only got it 'cause it came in a set and you wanted the other stamps in the set right?" I said no, I got it 'cause I specificly wanted the gnome stamp, at which point he couldn't hold back his laughter any longer.

We must be sisters....

I realized how out of sync my craft spending was when I had to buy a dress for a baby shower a few weeks ago! I balked at dropping $50 for a dress that I really needed (I even had a coupon!)..... yet spending $50 on stamp stuff seems like a monthly --or when I'm really bad-- even a weekly occurrance. That said, I almost never wear any of the "nice" clothes I have because I hope I'll have a chance to stamp and know they'll end up inked!

My moment of realization happened when I started hiding new purchases in the trunk of my car until everyone was asleep vs. hearing another word about how much stuff I have! Or...praying that the UPS guy shows up when no one is at home but me!

I came to this realization back in November and this is the first time I have shopped since then. I took 5 boxes full of stuff out of my room to give to good will. My policy was if I didn't use it in a year, then I wasn't keeping it. Now my room is back together and organized, all the garbage has been taken out of it, and I can now work happily. And so I bought, lol, enough for a 200.00 personal order!

I REALLY enjoyed reading this thread! I've been there, too. My stamps runeth over. And over. And over. And yet I still crave MORE. But like someone mentioned before, it may be an addiction, but it's a healthy one.

My husband simply calls is my "stamp porn." Of course, in mixed company he'll just call it my porn to embarrass me. ;)

LOL! Oh girl, I can't tell ya how many times I've done that!!!
I once drove way over the speed limit (way way way over) in order to beat my DH home from work so I could get the dang Hobby Lobby bags in the house (& hidden) before he got home. Not that he really cares, but he has this look...
BTW, the UPS guy is starting to have that same look...hmmm...I vote for Unmarked boxes from all crafting resources...afterall..it is stampornography...;)

My ah ha moment came when I did my taxes this year. I intentionally started a craft business to help write off some of my expenses. I spent over $8,000.00 last year on stamps & supplies. And, I know there were more receipts that I didn't keep/lost. I personally took them to my tax accountant so my husband wouldn't see how much I spent.

My moment of realization: when the guy that works at the PO says "Hey Amber, what did you buy NOW???" every day I got to pick up a box, lmao!

This is a great thread. I just started in Jan. and I have spent some money, got my income tax, instead of clothes, stamping equipment. Every other day a box was coming, but now I have just about every thing I need, and I am cooling my jets, because I was starting to get bad, I had to debate Whether or not to put oil in my tank for heat or buy stamping stuff I needed/wanted, I figured warm weather is almost here, so stamping won out.

I don't even try anymore to minimize what I have...and when my DH thinks I'm over the top....I simply show him some of YOUR (as in the ladies I envy with the amazing stamping rooms) stamping spaces..then he agrees..I'm not quite "there" yet! LOL

He refers to me as ...the dealer
Warn's husbands that I will lure their wives ..to the dark side
and knows the sound of the UPS truck pulling up..

:-D Your posts always make me smile...I can relate to the old clothes too...but it's my tween daughter hounding me...sigh. They are relentless!! I just keep telling her we have different priorities.

I was enjoying reading this thread, yes I'm guilty too, but when I got to the bottom of this page the ad banner read "Are you a wise investor?" Too funny!!! Of course investing in stamps is wise, it keeps me happy and sane!!!

Talking

I know the feeling..... I'd much rather shop for stamps than clothes!!! I retired almost 2 years ago and have bought maybe 2 articles of clothing since then. My stamps??????? To numerous to count and still buying! It's the best hobby I've ever had.
