I found this cool metal holder at Home Goods. Its like an accordian and stretches out, and the top has spaces to stick the cards down in. They had all different shapes like nutcrackers and gifts, i have the gifts one. Other years I have just laid them in a basket. I can't really think of anything else homemade...good luck!
I use cording from the fabric store. I hang it on the wall with push pins. I attach the cards to the cording with binder clips. I also display my RAK cards in my office by having a big piece of poster board that is hanging by my desk and I use binder clips to attach the cards to the poster board.
In my first house I had a pantry door that had louvers in it and I slid the cards in that. It was in the breakfast nook of the kitchen which is where we all ate and this way we got to enjoy them. Granted, some of them were sideways but that was ok. I have lived in two houses since then and neither have those doors (which I hated to dust anyways) but I sure miss them at Christmas time. I would also love some new idea.
I bought a cute metal card holder from Southern Living at Home last month. It came with a door hanger so it is hanging on the back of my living room door. I love it.
I have also seen cute metal ones at Pier One as well.
My Mom has had these huge red stockings as long as I can remember. they are about 3 feet long and about 18inches wide at the foot part. They're made out of felt and have white trim. We always just pinned our cards to them. I'm hoping to make some in the next day or two for us because I'm tired of just taping them to the pantry door!
I merely put mine in a basket. BUT -- my Mom-in-lay used wide red velvet ribbon. I think she thumb-tacked the ribbon to the wall, first putting a fold in the ribbon to hide the thumbtacks. Then she pinned the cards to the ribbon as they arrived.
Here is an idea for making a wreath from clothespins.
Another -- made with yarn (or you could use gold cord) wound through a potato chip carton.
This one is adorable. Little mittens on a clothesline.
I just take a long piece of red ribbon and tie it to the handrail coming up the steps from the front door. I punch a hole or two in cards as they come in, untie the ribbon, and slide the cards on. It's kind of fun to watch people look at the cards as they come in, especially my daughter - she'll sit down on the steps and work her way up as she reads.
Super simple, and when Christmas is done, I just take everything down and save the ribbon for something else (or next year).
For the last few years, I've been attaching velvet-like ribbon on each side of the front door and then paperclip the cards to the ribbons. Was tempted to not do it this year but don't know what else to do so will probably put them up again.
I have clear fishing line hung (use push pins to hold) across the entrance way in the livingroom and when the cards come i just open them and place them on it...No need to tie, clip or pin.. I keep the fishing line up all year as it is clear and so whatever the holiday (b-day, thangiving, Easter etc) I just display those cards...Fun.
We tape ours up on our door in the shape of a Christmas tree. Family and Friends always try and send us our first card of the season so that they can be the "star" on the tree.
This doesn't really help with your display problem BEFORE Christmas, but to make full use of the cards, once Christmas arrives, my family and I take one card down each night at dinner and pray for whoever sent it to us. Depending on how many cards you got you could be blessing your friends and family all the way till Valentines day!
Don't know if this would interest you but Carol Duvall had a Christmas Card Holder that she made on her TV show. It is in the shape of a tree. This link should take you to it:
