We close on our new home next Monday, and I will have a bedroom for crafts and scrapbooking.
In our last home, my scrapbook area was in the basement and had huge flourescent light strips so light was no problem. This room is a regular bedroom with one nice good sized window and one light fixture in the center of the rooms ceiling.
I am looking for ideas that will help me light a work area along one wall. Issue is that DH stipulates that whatever I do must not ALTER the room being a bedroom - for resale. So I can't mount flourescent lights in the ceiling. I also can't mount cabinets on the wall, so while under cabinet lighting would work, without cabinets it won't.
I have a lot of ELFA, so one thing I was considering is the tall free standing elfa unit in either 4 or 6 foot width and mounting light UNDER one of the shelves.
I am sure someone has faced this in an aparment or home, so I am looking for suggestions. Once we close next week, I can post a picture which should help.
I bought an off brand light at JoAnn's to light my work surface (a floor lamp). The neck on it is not very strong, and it continually sags...and I have to reaim it at my work area. I wish I had spent the extra money and bought an Ott-lite. They make one that is a desk top light with an electrical plug in the base...wish I had that one!

I should have been more clear!! I actually own several OTT lights and a natural color light as well. What I am looking for is a much larger lighted area, basically the size of a full desktop or even more. I need/want a lot of light:-D :-D :-D
I've had lighting issues in my current space, too. I've switched out all the bulbs in the fixtures for reveal bulbs, which help make the light seem brighter. In my last place, I actually took the cover off the fixture because it seemed to cut a lot of the light.
Could you swap out the overhead light fixture for some sort of hanging fixture with more light?
I have an Ott-Lite that is on the floor, but comes with a thingie so that you can hook it to the desk too. I love it and it's perfect. There's a picture of it in my gallery if you'd like to take a look-see.
I have a 6-ft. long table in my workshop, on which I have a desk-style Ott Light; I also have a floor-model Ott Light that I can move around to illuminate whichever area I'm working in at the moment - stamping, sewing, etc. I couldn't craft without them! I love my Ott Lights and highly recommend them.
What about some track lighting above your work space or some "canned" lighting installed in the ceiling. These wouldn't keep the room from being used as a bedroom later. I have seen some real attractive track lighting lately made of curved stainless steal/brushed nickel. They could be directed toward your work surface. You can also use the "Reveal" bulbs to improve color rendering.
I recently bought an Ott-lite that can either clamp on to a table or sit in a stand that comes with the unit. Right now it's clamped on the table next to my sofa in the family room so I can work on a cross stitch sampler. I love it - the light it provides is wonderful. I use it for lighting when I take pictures of my cards to upload into the gallery.

How about two pole lights on either side of your work- space.
something like this. This way you wouldn't be putting holes in the wall. and you could move them around where you need them. They do give off a lot of light!
Or this type which would be a floor lamp and a desk lamp all rolled into one.
