A while back someone mentioned a place near Lancaster, PA to purchase clear bags. I am planning a trip there and thought I would get bags for the upcoming craft-show season. Anyone remember the name or have the number for the post?

It's been years since I have visited Pennsylvania, I want a vacation badly. But everytime I look at the final cost of a weeks getaway I get to thinking how many x-ray I would have to take to equal the cost, would the money be better in the retirement fund. I know we have to live in the present, but having a decent future takes some planning. It's tough in this economy.

Well, it's hanging in there. And after todays accident, I am lucky to be able to go to work. Didn't see the melted ice cube on my ceramic tile until I slipped on it, skidded across kitchen floor, slammed into cabinet, bounced off, and hit the floor.Just glad no one had a video camera set up. Just a little bruised, this is one day a few extra pounds came in handy, had a little extra padding to help break the fall. My first concern was my spine, but no more pain than before the fall, and I can say I am lucky.

I am going to watch tv, and stamp tonight at work, try to stay out of trouble or injury.

Mother's Day craft items were a bust at my spring sale. Hardly sold any.
Today, I am spending some time repackaging the items.

That's a bummer with the sales, especially when a lot of work and preparation goes into the items. You just never know what people will go for.

Now it's Father's Day, it creeped up fast. I got a box of my "famous" toffee chocolate oatmeal cookies in the mail to my dad, he is 89. My mother fusses over his diet, but even in my medical training, if I make it to 89, I will eat any darn thing I want.

Just saw the bump on this thread and thought I'd chime in. I have been working on Christmas projects since February! Our church holds an annual Bazaar in early November, and this year for the first time we started a crafting guild. As the appointed leader, it is my responsibility to make all the arrangements for the meetings in terms of having supplies ready, instructions, and making sure that I have enough variety of things to do to keep all levels of talent (or lack thereof) busy - we range from a 6 year old girl who loves paint (but as most 6 year olds are is very messy) to an 85 year old woman who is almost blind. We always encourage participation from all our members so we try to keep everyone happy. We have a very, very ambitious project list (over 100 different items - man Pinterest is an addiction!!!), but realistically hope we can accomplish about half of them. We also have a theme of sorts - A (Re)Purposeful Christmas. We are trying as best we can to create new things from old, recycling along the way. To date we have completed or are working on:
  • wooden block ornaments (blocks retrieved from the church nursery - don't want kids putting them in their mouths, as Lord knows how long those blocks have been there!)
  • wine cork ornaments - all corks donated - one woman gave me a garbage bag full!
  • scrabble tile ornaments - made from scrabble tiles and paint stir sticks
  • glittered bulb ornaments - (you know the old school outdoor Christmas bulbs?) - donated by a parishioner who moved to an apartment
  • Incandescent light bulb ornaments - santa, snowmen, penguins, hot air balloons, angels, moose using burned out bulbs
  • popsicle stick angels with ribbon wings
  • chipboard bird package tie ons
  • broken china angel ornaments
  • bottle cap ornaments, pendants, zipper pulls, key chains, magnets, thumbtacks
  • domino pendants (thrift store score)
  • ornaments made from old fishing bobbers
  • snowman ornaments from old ping pong balls (retrieved from school after the city-wide table tennis finals)
  • enamel-look flowers using wire and nail polish
  • washer pendants (using nail polish and designer paper)
  • old wooden thread spools turned into Christmas elves
  • storage bins from old jeans
  • toy soldier and snowmen tags/tie-ons from paint sticks
We have so much more to do, but fortunately, we have begun to see some people want to take on projects on their own and have the skills to do so unsupervised, so we are able to just provide the supplies and instructions and they take the stuff home to complete there.

One neat thing that a group member did come up with was saving all the plastic clamshell baskets (berries, cherry tomatoes, etc) and using them as packaging for the items - that way we are keeping them out of the landfill (even though they can be recycled) and giving us a free way to pack their purchases instead of having to wrap them in lots of tissue and a plastic bag.

Well, that's it for now - so many projects, so little time!!!!

Hey Elizabeth,

What great ideas, and recycling with a wonderful purpose. Christmas will be here before we know it.

Spent last night looking for ideas for Christmas on Pinterest. Glass etching caught my eye, thinking a clear glass plate, I have seen them at Bed Bath and Beyond, a simple holiday design etched on the back of the plate, and delivered with a few cookies.

Anyone have any experience with etching cream?

I've done etched glass for gifts and craft fairs, using vinyl decals and the emboss resist technique . I use Armour Etch cream, which you can find at most craft stores. In addition to the tutorial here on SCS, I found good tutorials here and here on how to use Armour Etch. You'll definitely need to wear gloves and safety glasses, and the stuff reeks so work in a well-ventilated area.

Thanks for the tips, going to gather up some old glasses and jars to practice on. If there is something difficult about etching, I am sure to encounter it.

Got my coupons printed off, going to start comparing prices on etching paste, and stencils. Getting excited about a new endeavour. Just hope the enthusiastic mood remains for a bit longer. lol

Etching past bought, got at a great price with coupon. Got lots of popsicle sticks. Now got to find something to do with grumpy husband. He has broken out with a case of shingles, and not feeling up to par. I have a lot to do this weekend, and I am not a real great nurse. He was complaining about his shingle pain, and made the comment " I didn't know how bad the pain was". I told him to cough up a 11 lb baby like I gave birth to a few years ago, and compare the two.

Complete silence for a couple of hours after that. I guess compassion is not a strong quality of mine. lol

Most men are big babies! Mine complains all the time about his back and tells me how lucky I'm not to have any! Um, guess what, I just don't say it out loud 24/7 like him.

I did some calendar's using the clear acrylic 5x7 frames. Put scrapbook paper in the frames, small calendars, and embellish on the front. I don't see these type of frames anymore at WalMart though.

Are you talking about the little easel frame acrylic ones? My walmart doesnt sell them in store any more. However you can order them site-to-store, but you have to buy them in quanitites of 12. It isnt any more expensive then when you could buy them in store (or cheaper either). Check out the craft stores though, they still sell them

The dollar stores still sell those stand-up acrylic frames.

Good to see Cat's calendar came out nice and early this year. She is so fabulous for doing this and putting it our there.

I have to defend your husband. I had shingles while I was pregnant and the pain was so bad that it caused labor to start and I had my son six weeks early. I only had a 1x2 inch rash; just a small patch on my belly. The pain travels along the nerve path and is intense. Labor was easier than the shingles pain. I will admit that I did not have an 11 pound baby. I am sure that was very difficult!

Yes, shingles can be devastating, especially to the elderly and immune compromised. I took a quilt class over the weekend, and left him alone, so he could sleep if necessary, and went by a nice bakery and brought him a big piece of fresh strawberry cake home. He is improving, and the house is a little quieter.
