About a third of my office is Jewish and I never donated a set of Christmas cards because I wanted a Jewish set to donate as well.

Now I can make cards for my Jewish friends and co-workers, make cards and other items to donate for the auction, and I'm thinking there HAS got to be a market to sell these cards as well!

Thank goodness for the sheet on how to use what symbol and when. Makes it easier to avoid a faux pas.
How nice of you, Joan, to do that. I'd love to see the cards when you make them.

My dear dear PSF Julie, hello!! About the only thing you shouldn't do, IMO, is not send a card. As far as sentiments, pretty much anything will do except something that mentions Christ or maybe has a new Testament verse. I've used the SU sets Close as a Memory and a retired one (the one with the Calla Lily - name escapes me right now) and both are perfect.

The PTI set is just holidays, so there's nothing specifically for sympathy. But I'm sure anything you have at home will be fine.

Oh, and the only ignorant question, friend, is the one you don't ask.

Default PTI Jewish stamp set

Just bought mine b/c of this thread! Hope it gets here soon enough for the high holidays. This set is fantastic and will compliment the other holiday (non Jewish) stamps I have through SU! Price was great, too. Thanks!

I think you'd best get crackalackin back to work girlfriend. (Hey, I'm just doing what you asked me to, right?)

There are many people who know very little about the Jewish religion and are afraid of offending people so they do nothing at all. I'd much rather you ask than not send a card. So thanks for asking!

Default sympathy

I have made Jewish sympathy cards using Ecclesiatics' "to everything there is a season..." I have a couple of these stamps. I bought them a few years ago when there were almost no Jewish stamps so I believe I bought them from "Christian" stamp cos.

I know I am very excited about the PTI set(s). I ordered last night and can't wait to get it! I, too, thought that one of the very best things about it was that Nichole researched so thoroughly and thoughtfully so as not to offend or disappoint. I was first in line, I think, lol!

Yay for being first in line Betsy! I haven't ordered yet, but I think I'd better hurry up before she's out of stock. I emailed some friends the link to see if anyone else wants to order it so we can all get free shipping.

Now we need a campaign for Mazel Tov additions II with a kiddush cup, a braided challah, toda raba, and yasher koach. Nope, not complaining at all about what she did include, but now I want more!!

I ordered my PTI sets last night! I like that they included a link to a page naming all of the images and giving info. Very thoughtful! http://www.papertreyink.com/files/Je...mage_Chart.pdf

Default Acrylic stamp tips

Not sure if I should post here, but since I just ordered Papertree's Mazel Tov & MT additions (plus my first acrylic block, a gridline), it kind of continues the thread.

I have never used acrylics, so these will be my first.

I took a quick peek at the tips on Papertree's site, but wanted to ask if anyone has any special tips to working with, stamping, placing, cleaning, storing, etc. acrylic stamps, as I want to hit the ground running once it arrives!!

Many thanks!

Since I just ordered this set myself, I'm very happy to learn the correct way to use it. Regarding the advice on NOT using 'Happy' with Bat Mitzvah, what phrase would you put together from this set to make it accurate? "Mazel Tov on your Bat Mitzvah?"

I'm so excited to use this set. Many of my friends are Jewish and I know they would be very pleased to get a Jewish holiday/occasion card.

Thanks.

"Mazel Tov on your Bat Mitzvah" is absolutely perfect!

Yay Nichole!

Elyssa, I've seen "May you be inscribed for a good year" so it can't be that uncommon. I've also seen "may you be inscribed in the book of life" but I'm not sure I've seen the "another year" part of it. I too would like to see more Judaica sets. But this set is certainly a great start!

We were thinking this is only the tip of the iceberg!!
purim- a grager, hamentashen, masks, small scroll (megilla)
Shabbat-candles, challah, kiddish cup
Havdallah- candle, spice box, wine cup, a week of peace, shavuah tov
Rosh ha Shanna- apples, honey, (could include a bee and hive)
succot- lulov and etrog, succah(sp),
Yiddish/Hebrew phrases- shayna punnum, Yoffee toffee, verklempt, mench, machar, mishuggah, I'm too sleepy to think of more but I know there are soo many more in this group!!

Since we're all giving our wish lists, I'd love some Yiddish phrases -- something silly, like "Oy vey, I missed your birthday," or "Another Monday? Oy" or something like that. I love the idea of Verklempt!

Also I'd love to see several more choices for Rosh Hashanah greetings. I always use May you be inscribed for a good year. And, I'd love to see a sentiment for Hanukkah, like "Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel" or something cute like that.

After saying I wasn't going to order the set right away, I went ahead yesterday and got it. I can't wait. I hope Nichole sees this thread and reads how appreciative we all are.

I hope Nichole reads this thread and makes more Jewish stamps so I can buy them! I don't even have the first set yet, and I want more. Nichole - if you're out there - please make more Jewish sets... I'll buy them sight unseen!

Am I assuming correctly, that images such as trees and leaves would be appropriate but butterflies would not?

Also, thanks to whoever brought this thread back; it's been so very informative!

The reason I thought to avoid butterflies is that they represent the Resurrection?

They do? I never heard that before. How interesting. Then I would have to say, in the event that the recipient might know that, I would avoid the butterflies.

I would think that would depend on the recipient, wouldn't it? I don't know that I would ever think to equate butterflies with religion...

From a Christian symbols website

Butterfly: The beautiful butterfly, with the power of flight, emerging from the apparently lifeless cocoon: what could be a more perfect symbol of the Resurrection?

We all learn something everyday!

Interesting, I did not know that. The reason I assumed some people did not want to use butterflies is that it is often a theme in Holocaust art and liturature.

And I didn't know that!

I love SCS for just this reason. I learn so much NON-stamping stuff from everyone!

Thank you so much for sharing your input. I've been wanting to make cards for my husband's family. I want to be respectful of the Jewish Holidays and wasn't sure what to put on the cards. Now I feel free to use my apples, bees, etc. and now I also know what to look for when purchasing stamps in the future. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I haven't posted on this thread in a long time, but I wanted to make sure that everyone saw the new PTI sets! From reading thru, it looks like most people have - but just in case you haven't, here are the links! I just saw them tonight and can't wait to order them!!

How exciting. Sad to say that I haven't even ordered mine yet. I have a friend that wants to order to and I suggested we combine them to get free shipping. She is coming over today to learn about acrylic blocks and give me a check. Then we can order!

It's time to start designing DS's Bar Mitzvah invitations. I'm so happy to have a new set of images to incorporate. I'm thinking I'll use the Torah and maybe the Star with the swirlies. Definitely need to make them simpler this time. DS#2 has a lot more friends to invite than his brother did. I think I've got 45 just in kids (between his school friends - he's in Spanish Immersion and has been with the same group of kids for 7 years - and his Hebrew School class). Yikes!

I've been meaning to order from PTI for ever so long, but I have a very limited budget, and I work side by side with my SU! demo so I always feel like I need to give her my business. She needs the extra income. However - and I haven't hopped over to PTI yet and haven't seen the set - Jen will have to do without me this catalog, as I'm spending my budget on PTI products.

Ms. Heady - thank you so much! You have a new customer for life.

My sister & I did all the invites to her DS's Bar Mitzvah (a little over 150 cards). He really did not care what we did so we kept it simple - plain white pre-cut cards with a simple embossed edge (like you use for wedding invites) and we printed the body of the card on the computer (she has Hebrew on her computer) then at the top just stamped a small Torah and embossed it in silver - then ran a silver border on the card with a silver pen. Did all of them in one afternoon!

Did all of them in one afternoon!
That is amazing that you did 150 in one afternoon - even with 2 of you. Quite impressive!

Question - how did you emboss the Torah without getting "extra" silver embossing powder flakes where you didn't want them?

I'd love to see a pic of your card!

I'm going to guess she used an embossing buddy. I went way overboard in DS#1s invites. These will be much simpler. I also printed them out on the computer. Embossing, masking, glitter, more embossing. Uh-uh, not again. These will be much simpler.

Wow, 150 in one day! That's a lot - wanna come help me?

I'm very excited because I ordered my PTI sets last night. Got the check from my friend and we ordered together to save shipping. Hope it ships soon!

It's a bit of a blur, so I don't remember if I used my embossing buddy. The Torah stamp was not very big and positioned near the top of the card so I did not have to pour lots of embossing powder on the cards. I will try and attach a photo of the invite tonight when I get home from work. You will see it is very simple, but my nephew really did not care what the invites looked like (with the cash saved he was able to get a Tallit that he loves).

DS#2 is my stamper/helper. He has his own stamps, inks and markers. He always makes his own cards for his friends' birthdays, thank you notes, etc. So he cares and will want to help I'm sure. He has picked his colors - red and black. So now I just need my PTI set and we're ready to start designing! Will be simple 2 layer - no fold style.

I'd love to see a picture when you have a chance. Thanks!

Default Got Extra's?

Alrighty - after posting my last message, I did as promised. I bought the Mazel Tov set and two of the sentiment sets I've had my eye on for so long (well, had to buy enough for free shipping, right?!).

My mom lives in a HUD-subsidized senior facility here in Sacramento that is 65-70% Jewish. A far-too-high number of the ladies have out-lived their families and never receive cards or presents. If anyone would like to make a few extra High Holiday cards, you can send them to the Albert Einstein Residence Center at 1935 Wright Street, Sacramento CA 95825. Tell 'em Ceils daughter Sarah sent you.

Here is the simple card we made (I blanked out some of the names).
