1st night Seder for Passover will be Saturday April 19th 2008. Place cards for the Seder would be fun to make or even wine glass charms!

OY! On the other hand, I remember someone who was Jewish getting a Christmas card and being offended. Then again, the person giving her the card was her MIL so that could be another thing entirely................

In this instance, I usually choose a non-denominational "Season's Greetings" card.

there's a tradition of giving yummy treats for Purim (it's called Mishloach Manot in Hebrew or "Shalach Manos" in Yiddish) to loved ones -- kind of like a trick-or-treat basket of goodies -- and a cute idea would be making those little folded baskets with a gift tag. Those Target mailboxes would also be great.

I won't add it here but if you Google the term you will get all the info you need to know on the history and the meaning etc.

Here's my Passover card. Made it for a SAS. Not the most exciting card, but clean and simple.

Hey, I got "published". I sent my 2 Chanukah cards to ShalomScrapper.com because I used their paper. They put me in their gallery. It's not Cards Magazine, but it's a start, right?

Really wish I had gotten some of the matzah paper. I thought I had but apparently I only did a Chanukah order.

This is my plan... of course, I have to make some little "invitations" to the seder to figure out who is coming!

Anyone here eat Sephardic-style food or are we the only Jewish family in America that does not like potato kugel? Its probably because I did not grow up with it but my husband did and he doesn't like it either. So since I am a Jew-by-choice, I choose to be Sephardic and my husband says he is Sephardic because his wife does all the cooking!! We're having chicken and rice (oh no!) for Passover, yumm!!!

My niece is vegan, so soy, and lentils are kosher for passover this year. We are having mock liver w/lentil, and tofu (instead of eggs) while we have gifilta fish. her matza balls will have a soy egg substitute to make the balls. Then quinoa pilaf w/dinner. We figured out that everything w/did had some animal product in it so this was our best compromise. everyone seems ok w/ it.

Thanks Sarah for answering while I wasn't checking the thread. It's a retired SU set called Mazel Tov. Very hard to find. One of the few Judaica sets from SU that I liked. The other one I like is Stars of David.

Would love to see the place cards too! The only Jewish Blog I know of is Shayla's (S_Anthony). Actually I think Hetty has a blog too, but I don't have a link to it. Shayla has some great links on her blog. There are couple of Yahoo Groups dedicated to Jewish Stamping.

Default SU Spoiler Alert!

This is a spoiler for the new SU Fall/Winter catalog. If you don't want to spoil the surprise, then don't look. There - you've been warned.

There's a new Judaica set (why oh why can't they spell Chanukah my way?) It's actually not bad, but not what I was hoping for. It's not cutesy and doesn't look like a 3 year old drew it, so that's a plus. There's a Happy Bat Mitzvah (ok, would Mazel Tov have been too hard?), Happy Bar Mitzvah, a Star of David with words in it (Chag Sameach, Yasher Koach, L'chayim, Shalom, Toda Raba, mazel tov, shavua tov), and a Menorah with Happy Hanukkah in the middle. If you want to see it click here. It's $15.95 for the 4 stamps. Not sure I'd ever use the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ones. Actually, I'd probably use the "happy" part on birthday cards.

I was excited to see that in the new catalog there was a new Judaic set. I was very disappointed to what was in it. Maybe the next one will be better.

would you please educate me? Why are there different spellings for Chanukah/Hanukkah? Also, what do the words in the Star of David mean?

I was really looking forward to seeing what SU would create for the Jewish stamp set and I was disappointed. How hard, really, could it have been to find the rabbi of the Salt Lake synagogue and ask him to vet the stamp wordings. "Happy Bar/Bat Mitzvah" is so wrong. Aren't there any Jewish people who work at SU who could say to use "Mazel Tov" instead?

I like the star with the sentiments in it because we don't ever see "Yasher Koach" in a stamp and that's awesome, but really, that's like putting greetings for Christmas/Easter/Lent/whatever all in the same stamp. Just not done.

I look forward to seeing what other companies will do. Now I"m going to check out justjohanna.

Could you write SU with this information? At least they're trying, but you'd think they'd go to the source to get it right!!

Yes, at least they're trying and I give them such a big gold star for that. But everything else that they do is in such fine taste that to have this wrong really hits a sour note. I wonder who I would send that to. Do you think that a calm, respectful letter is out of place?

I think it would be completely appropriate. Their email is www.stampinup.com and the address from the catalog is Stampin' Up!, 12907 South 3600 West, Riverton, UT 84065.

I actually like this set. I think the Menorah with Happy Hanukkah in it is very classy. (And yes, that is my preferred way of spelling Hanukkah.) I think the Star has some neat and different says that you don't usually see, also very versatile because you can highlight different words for different occasions. I also think that you could use the words "Bar Mitzvah" or "Bat Mitzvah" cut out and put near the Mazel Tov on the star. or the Yasher Koach. And it's not an expensive set, so that makes it appealing, too.

I am glad that the new set is only $15.95 as I always feel that I "have" to get the one Jewish set SU puts out. Several sets back they had "Mazel Tov it's your Bar/Bat Mitzvah" stamps. The "it's" made me crazy (you say Mazel Tov on your Bar/Bat Mitzvah) so I cut they stamps apart and use the Mazel Tov and Bar & Bat Mitzvah as separate elements (one year SU did put out a set which read "Mazel Tov on you Bar/Bat Mitzvah" and I use that as the inside sentiment). The "Happy" is just wrong and it looks like I will have to cut this this set up too!
Luckily I just got a bunch of great Zum Gali Gali stamps so I am not too upset!

Hey girls, there's someone looking for Hebrew Holidays if anyone wants to trade or sell it.

Default Bat Mitzah gift question

not being Jewish, I wanted to make sure it was not offensive in any way to include cash in a Bat Mitzah card??? My husband was her dad's best man, but living out of state, we don't really know HER too well ... wanted to do SOMETHING to acknowledge the event, but wasn't sure if it was appropriate to give cash or not?

thanks

Cash or a gift card are perfectly acceptable. Traditionally it is done in multiples of 18 -- $18, $36, etc -- because Hebrew letters correspond to numbers, and the letters for 18 spell "Chai" which means life.

HTH,

So glad when my demo said there would be a new Judaic set. So disappointed when I saw it. I think I'll buy it because if it sells well, perhaps that will incent SU! to keep making them, but I probably will continue to use Hebrew Holidays.

However, I do applaud SU! for at least trying.
