i know occasionally stampin up offers free shipping. i have a sizeable order i would like to place, free shipping would make it actually push the commit button. anybody aware of any great stampin up deals coming up?

Thought - you could join as a SU demo yourself, and then your starter kit with $125 of your choice of product for $99 would ship free. If your order is over $125, then you could get a discount on the rest of your wish list, which would be a higher discount than free shipping.
oh i have thought of that. then i would feel obligated to actually be a demonstrator. I work a full time and then drive straight to my part time job. i would feel guilty not having parties. so no free shipping coming up?

I haven't done a party in ages (I also work FT). Some demos never do parties and just do online sales. You don't have to meet your quarterly minimum your joining quarter, so you'd just have to sell or buy $300 by December 31 to stay active into Sale-a-Bration season beginning in January. With the holiday catalog and Black Friday sales, that shouldn't be too hard.
There is no obligation at all to have parties. There is no obligation to do anything really. If you don't order a certain amount a quarter then you just don't keep being a demo. There is nothing wrong with joining for the great deal, getting the discount on your orders then just dropping when you have everything you want.

Won't somebody think of the paint chips?
$300 US per quarter. Your starter kit would not count towards that. But pretend your wishlist is an even $200. You'd spend $99 to get $125 of your wishlist with free shipping. The remaining $75 you would pay shipping, but at a 20% discount, leaving your quarterly minimum at $225 to sell/buy by the end of the year.
One note is that the career plan for demos changes next month. It's possible there will be a promotion or some sort of recruitment special - nothing announced, but a lot of demo speculation between the career plan changes, World Cardmaking Day, and no special promotions going on this month. Fingers crossed! :p It just depends on how fast you want your new toys if you're thinking of signing up.

I have signed on as a demo several times now, and never had a single party. I take advantage of the fabulous deal, order what I want when I want and then fade away...
Apparently Stampin'Up! is aware that quite a few people do this, because they keep letting us! ;)
I have two reps I use. I split my business between the two. one is my original rep and then a friend from church does it. see I even have guilt about that. guilt it's what's for dinner.

HEY! Quit living a parallel life, lol! I have a dear friend who was my demo for years, then acquired another demo, too. I've signed up at different times under each of them, and they never seem to mind... BTW, guilt is crazy-making - STOP IT!
I'm like Sue. I have signed up several different times now over a long number of years. When I have a *large* wish list and want to save the 20% for all of it I do just what Sue says. And I have a couple of friends who help me meet my minimum orders. Just a little bit from them, but it helps.
No parties, no downline. That's what being a "hobby demo" is all about.
I am afraid I would be compelled to add a third job to the mix. And I know zero people who would buy a stamp. I know lots who go to the stamp camps at church and I would bet three actually own a stamp. Still mulling this one over.

I'm not trying to push you any particular direction, but wanted to let you know that I'm sort of a "lone wolf" and usually only have one or two close friends and that's it. I have never been comfortable with the idea of any "job" that requires participation by family and friends, so I may mention that I'm a demo, but I never suggest anything about ordering or hosting or anything. I just join to get what I want, and move on...
I never have parties either and none, and I mean NONE, of my friends stamp or do any papercrafting. They think I'm a bit strange. I've been a demo since Feb. 2004. I'm barely making my minimums now and am thinking of buying just twice a year (new catty and Salebration.)
I understand completely were Lori is coming from.
I order regularly from my SU demo, and could probably swing making the minimum for myself at least a couple of times per year if not all 4 quarters, but feel so guilty just contemplating signing up only to get the discount.
I would never have the time to sell and don't have any friends that stamp. I would indeed be only a hobby demo for myself.

It's actually much more common that you would suspect, Alex. No reason to feel guilty whatsoever. ;)
All of you are enablers! LOL I came across this thread just browsing the newest posts... I'm just getting back into stamping, so I've already reached out to my demo from years previous and am signed up for a couple of her stamp camps. Of course I have a mini-list already and now you all have me considering just signing up for the discount!
Just speaking about the shipping, a little anecdote.
A number of years ago, I placed an $800.00 order once with TAC. Loved that company but same shipping deal my shipping charge was 10% of the sale - yes $80.......outrageous. My TAC rep stepped up when I protested (that's just an outrange LOL) and split the cost. IMO $40 was still ridiculous but I was able to live with it so I went ahead with the order and KUDOS to my rep for splitting the shipping with me. I do wish SU and other companies could go to an actual shipping charge even with a reasonable handling fee.

This may be a silly reason, but for any of you on the fence about signing up, I have to say one of my biggest reasons for staying a demo is so I can go on the demo forum here on SCS. I love all the great ideas, solutions, tips and more I glean over there. I love the General Forum too, but I like having ALL the options available.

I have signed up three times. Twice it was when the kit was less than $99! The first time I never held a class.
The second time I had a class every other month with another demo for about a year (we each created three cards). This time around we've done close to the same thing. So really, I'm only a hobby demo.
If I had a big order I wouldn't hesitate to join. I do understand your hesitation. You are loyal to your demo. Very nice indeed!

I havent stamped over 2 or 3 years now and looking into getting back into stamping. need to look at the current catalog to see what good stuff SU has ;) wouldn't mind signing up to start up my stash again ;)

I have almost ten years in as a demo, with a handful of friends that order. I have had one workshop in that time and I hated it, will never do it again. My friends and I get together several times a year to stamp and have fun. When that stops I will stop 'selling.'
I don't understand the 'guilt' part of the equation, though. Why would there be guilty feelings?
