Has anyone noticed how blinged out cards are getting??
I am just wondering if anyone has noticed how blinged out cards are getting. Cards used to be so simple. Now it seems more and more cards are becoming so filled with bling.
Don't get me wrong, they do look pretty, but it is kind of overwhelming when I see these. I could not imagine giving one away and then having someone throw it out.
Simple is great in my book!! Not to mention much less expensive.
I love to see cards with lots of bling but always ask myself, 1) could I part with that much bling for one card, 2) do I have the patience to place so many gems so neatly and 3) do I want to pay the extra postage. I'm sure there will be times when the answer is YES!!! I'm trying to use the stuff I buy these days, no more hoarding! That reminds me, I need to make a b-day card for my princess of a niece who turns 4 this week (and I know her mom saves my cards); Bring on the bling!

I think there are still a lot of simpler cards out there, but I do understand what you're saying. Definitely check CAS in the gallery! There is so much inspiration there.
I personally have been falling in love with "blingy" cards recently and have starting to LOVE creating them! I will not send them or give them to everyone, just to who I know will keep them at least for little while. To me, this is really just a hobby and I started enjoying to add lots of fun stuff to my cards and spent a lot of time on one card. That said, a simple card with a little bling is just as beautiful
I have totally noticed as well! They are getting very elaborate and fancy and blinged out!!! It overwhelms me too and then makes me take a look at my usually simple cards...LOL. Usually I just end up adding Stickles to everything to help give them a little boost!
It does seem like cards are getting more and more "blingy", "flowery" etc.
I try to do the same to mine, but they never look as good as others, it seems. Plus I think about the extra postage it will cost, (as I sell most of my cards). I do use a lot of stickles too!!

I think everyone has to find their own style. I like the cards with lots of bling, layers, cutting...etc. I know that my style is a little different. I do better with color and texture than bling.
I am another one who thinks that maybe the "bling thing" has gotten a little out of control.
I like beautiful cards, but I also want to make cards that are mailable and don't take more time than a whole scrapbook page! One of my reasons for getting into stamping and card making was to be able to do papercrafting that was quicker and less complicated. With a full and busy life- teaching, a family, home, an elderly Mom with medical issues, personal medical issues- spending hours on something as basic as a card is just not an option I am interested in.
Don't get me wrong- I like looking at the over-the-top cards, but have no interest in trying to imitate them.
Don't get me wrong. I love them. Just cannot see myself creating them. I have tried and they just do not seem to turn out the way the others do.
My thing is, I got into stamping so that I would eventually not spend as much to give a card. I ended up spending waaayyyy more than it should cost. Crazy!!
With the economy the way it is, money is best spent on groceries (you practically have to mortgage the house to buy a gallon of milk now days) and everyday things. Ya know, like school lunches, toilet paper, laundry detergent etc. After all that is bought the funds are not as plentiful as they used to be.
i flip-flop... i will favourite a clean and simple card, then go and favourite a patterned paper extravaganza!!! likewise with my own card-making.. i love the variety.

I love bling! I like shiny glittery stuff like a raccoon. However, I'm a more clean and simple type as well. Clean works better for me. I think there's a place for everything. Us CAS girls make great cards too, just different.
It just all depends on my mood. I tend to feel the "need" to put more and more stuff on my card when it would probably look just as good with less. I love the CAS look and I am not sure why I can't do it!

I love the super over the top blinged out stuff but I only do it on my scrapbooks. I keep my cards simpler since so many get thrown away.

then I go through my gallery and see this and have to laugh. Must have been in a sparkly mood that day. . .
Anyway, I think that with the less expensive alternatives to Swarovski crystals out there (like Kaiser's stuff), more people are more apt to stick 'em on wherever!

I haven't been around the "Card" world very long, but have been a scrapper for years. I know some scrappers who are now avid card makers...wonder if this a trend and if so effects the "New" look of cards. The scrappers I know (including myself) that make cards have a totally different look and feel to them (for the most part)....for example just look at my first two cards (I only have three)!!
I'm working on making my cards look like a card makers cards...LOL!
Well, I try to fit as much as I possibly can on every card, because that's what makes me happy! I love them elaborate and glitzy! I also like some CAS stuff made by other stampers. But for me, it always feel unfinished and lonely, just like for some stampers, more stuff just feels like too much. Just do what you like, girlfriend, and don't worry about what everyone else is doing!!
YES!! Although, sometimes I finished a card and I realize I've got a couple of layers, some ribbon and a couple of brads or eyelets and I think I've gone "overboard" LOL! Then I look at the really tricked out cards and I tell myself it's all relative =)
I don't think I have ever made a card that didn't have some sort of bling on it somewhere! Maybe not a lot...but some!! What I have noticed is that the cards seem to be getting more cluttered..you know 5 layers with patterned paper and primas and die cuts and bling and ribbon...... It confuses the eye. I like simple better. (only my humble opinion!!)
I got into stamping as a hobby, expression of art . I love them all, 50 layers, add one more , 20 pearls plus, it needs something else , one layer wonders, those are just as gorgeous. All cards are just a creative expression. And I do not think many people mail them as much as they enjoy making them. I mail many of them to my mother, who has a table in the hallway and displays all of them . She doesn't throw away anything . So no, it doesnt bother me if people bling out their cards or just stay simple. All of them are pretty to look at.
That's exacty how I feel. I love them ALL. Personally I used to make more simple cards when I started out and didn't have many supplies. Now it's evolved to include a lot of bling and other do-dads, but occasionally I still like to make a simple card. For me it's all just toys that I love to play with. I make them as more of a hobby, although I do send the really blinged out cards only to my MIL who is also a card maker and can appreciate it. Otherwise, I usually hand deliver the other blinged out cards and save the simpler cards for mailing.
Yes, I've also noticed and must say I'm also guilty of wanting the "extra bling" on mine too. They do look really nice but then when you go to the post office, like I did today, and have to pay $1.51 to mail a 6 inch card...the blings may start disappearing or I may just have to go with the normal size cards. I really love the bigger square cards but they are considered "parcel" so they cost more to send! Most of my customers prefer a larger card so I think I will just stick to the 5 x 7.
hmmm, im right in the middle of the line =) which is so me. It really just depends on the card, maybe who will be getting it too. I dont like to over do things, if a gem will enhance the card ill use it =)
I usually have lots and lots of layers and always ribbon and some other embelishment. I love the sparkle, but I have trouble putting those teeny tiny rhinestones on. I go from decked out to totaly clean and simple, not much in between. Weird huh?
I say bring on the bling, but that's just me. I am old enough to truly understand that you only go around once in this life, and I want my ride to glitter and shine.
My dear sweet departed mother was really a timid soul, but loved, loved all things sparkly.
When I show my dh one of my cards, he looks Heavenward and says, "Belva, Do you see your daughter? I know you're proud of her."

Actually Michelle, I agree that since scrappers have come over to the dark side (:p ), we are seeing cards with soooo many layers, soooo much bling and soooo much fuss. A lot of the time you can spot a scrapper's card.
We were taught many, many years ago that a card should have a focal point...that one point that will draw the eye immediately when we look at it. 'Fraid nowadays, there are several points to look at all at once. A lot of the time....this actually makes the card less appealing!
Sometimes I am with the lady who posted this thread...In mourning of the "old days" when stamping really was the feature of the card...not all the peripheral stuff.
The other thing is...I think it is becoming a bit of a competition to see who can outbling, outlayer and outfuss each other...LOL....Guess you can tell I am not in this particular competition. Don't get me wrong...I do layer and I do bling a bit and certainly not on every card...I would so get sick of bling very quickly if I did that!
Having said all the above...stamping and card making is totally a subjective hobby. Everyone should feel free to create what they like.
Bring back all the wonderful techniques we used to do!!!!!!!!
Cheers.

I am just wondering why you would want to make your cards look like a card-maker's card rather than a scrapper's one. I've got to say that it seems to me that scrappers can often use patterned papers in a totally different way to what I would, and I love seeing that and admire it. I don't think that scrapper's cards necessarily mean lots of layers and embellishments to me, I've seen some amazing CAS cards from scrappers.
I think what matters most is doing what YOU like and enjoy, and being yourself in your card-making (and life, generally).
I like bling on some of mine, but it's not something I reach for every day, not even Stickles, LOL.
I love shiny! I love sparkle and glitter and blink on a card. But even so, most of the multi-layered, multi-embellished cards are just too over the top for my personal tastes. I like a variety of styles but it's always refreshing to see cards that are less cluttered. I just came across this CAS Favorites of the Week thread
started by LateBlossom and have really enjoyed seeing the beauties listed there.
I always look for the Favorites of the Week thread by Smitty2004 on Sundays because of all the wonderful cards that are highlighted. (Many thanks to Janice for that thread.) Now I'll have to look for the CAS Favorites of the Week, too.

I use a craft knife. First, cut the glue strip, then pick up the rhinestone with the tip of the craft knife, position it where you want it, and press with your finger as you pull the knife away...carefully!
I find simple cards more difficult to make. They have to be clean and flawless. A blinged card can be the result of a few mistakes here and there with ribbons and bling hiding some of them. The trouble with some simple cards I find are that not everyone has an eye for color. They try to use too many colors that don't always coordinate together. Something like that is always a big turn off for me. I like simple and most of my cards take only 20 minutes max but I do love collecting embellishments and my new year's resolution was to use it up this year. So, you will be seeing lots of bling and embellies from me!! Like someone said to each their own.
