Has anyone ever REALLY REGRETTED not buying a set before it retires?
My retiring set list is so long... I mean; they're like FRIENDS that I can't say goodbye to! Have any of you ever regretted NOT buying a set that you had a chance to get before it retired?
YES!!! There were a couple sets I wanted from the last catalog year that I didn't get and now I still want them and at least one is going for almost $50! One is the Girl Power set - girl scout like and the other is the Groovy set. So instead of spending $20 on each set, I'll end up spending about $80+ total!
But it's only been interest specific designs. I don't worry too much about the flowers - there will always be new ones.
Well let me put it this way..............I don't know about you, but it seems I barely have time to stamp with my sets that are current (but I am a demo) let alone the retired one's I have hung onto.................I would highly recommend that you get your retired sets from some of the lists, for a cheaper price if possible, because there will be a ton of new stuff that you will want your money for. Just my opinion.

There are very few I've regretted not buying. I've managed to obtain most of the OLD retired sets I didn't order off SCS at reasonable prices and have just tried to detach myself from the sets anyway. They are just things and the world won't end if I don't have the stamp set I want. If I have lots of wishlist items on the retired list and my friends have them, then I buy one I can't borrow from someone else. I try to keep myself from getting caught up in the hype.
Absolutely! I'm a demo now and only demo current sets. However, if there's a retiring set I like I go ahead and get it. I'd rather buy it directly from SU and get the credit for it, than pay much more for it later, used. I've never regretted buying retiring sets.
I have never regretted not getting stuff off the retired list. This year now that I'm a demo I didn't get one set cause I can't use it anyway and there weren't any on the list that I just couldn't live without.
I wish I had bought Hope for Comfort when it retired last year. I don't like the current Sympathy set as well. Also, I have a number of customers who have wanted it, but it goes for quite a bit on e-bay.

I've just started stamping, but just bought the Farm Fresh before it's discontinued.. i've seen it before I even knew what SU was and wanted to grab it before it's gone! I'll have to double check to be sure I get what I want before they're gone...

Yes, there are sets that I have regretted not buying, but for most of us it is just not possible to have it all at once. Sooooo, I make a list of the retired sets I want and then over several weeks I knock down the list to a manageable lot. The last of these sets I will order at the June stamp club workshop. If I could have everything that I wanted, I know I wouldn't be happy either. Part of the fun for me is planning what to get each month and then savoring my purchase.
The stamps sets that I REALLY do regret buying, I end up purchasing second hand. But at least then I know I REALLY wanted them if I still want them a month or a year from now. There are some stamps sets that I just had to have during retirement that have NEVER been inked up (I hate to admit it), but perhaps that is more a function of being limited by time than anything else.
There have been some I have regretted not buying. But then there are a few, that I have bought and haven't used! GASP!
I am in a HUGE debate over whether to buy or not buy Snowy Play! I love snowmen, but have several Christmas Sets. Sigh! Better hurry up and make up my mind!
I am getting Snowy Play because I have three winter birthdays I can use it on and it is so cute! Then I have to get Pailsy because there are so many cool samples in the galleries!!! I know I will regret it if I don't;)
Take this from a person who bugged the daylights out of the buy sell trade boarders for a good 6 months looking for a stamp...if you want it, get it now...I looked for a stamp for 6 months, then finally resorted to ebay...i am convinced there were only 3 in the whole country...and I even got congrats from the board when I found it....put it this way, if the stamp was popular, you have a better chance of getting it second hand...if it was not so popular, then get it now, and save yourself some stress...
I always get a couple of retired sets. Ones I managed to push further on down the list, but yet I let Tropical Blossoms slip through. I'm still kicking myself for that one. If anyone wants to let it go, please pm me. I'd get your wish list now!
I DID buy Hope for Comfort last year and love it. It is the only sympathy set I have, but since I don't demo those sets I don't care that it is retired - I love the sentiments in it.
There have been a couple that I wish I had bought, and a few I wish I had never gotten rid of. If you think you may want it, buy it!!! I still have Girl Power and don't know that I will let it go. I have been looking for Scouts at Play for a good customer/friend of mine... she ended up buying it on the bay last week for $60 - OUCH!
I can't think of any that I wish I had bought, but the first year I really "invested" in stamps, I bought several retiring sets that I have never used. Now I am trying to get rid of them. I did buy one thing off the retiring list this year (Paisley), but tell myself that the new stuff coming out will be way better! Saving my money for July!
I don't think I've regretted not getting a set. There are always new sets I like just as well if not better! I think I would rather have some fun new sets than old retired ones. If there are a couple of sets that you feel you MUST have then I would go for it! But don't overdo it because they always have new ones coming out!
Before I became a demo the set Have A Ball was retired, it was on my wish list and I didn't even know that SU did a retiring list, and my demo was a super busy person so I guess she was just too busy to let us know. I have the new sports set, but I think I really missed the opportunity with that one.

Just Flying By...they didn't come out with as many cute Halloween sets, and I just loved that one, but thought surely they would come out with something I loved more.
I did finally find one for nearly double what I would have gotten it for from SU.
My advice is this: If you dearly love something and have a need for it, get it (like the cheerleading set from a couple of years ago). Don't assume that they will come out with another set to fulfill your particular need, because they might not.
I say, if you get it and they come out with something cuter, you can always BST it or sell it on the bay and buy the cuter set!

The only one that I regret not getting is Tractor Time. I HAD to have Tropical Blossum and still haven't even cut it out. I ordered Paisley, but was planning that before the list came out......just waiting for the new catalogue.
A couple years back I was laid off when the retiring list came out so I didn't feel right getting any. It was the year they got rid of all the stamps with the kids in them, beach babies, fall for all etc.
I managed to get all of the sets but one. I am still looking for Night before Christmas! I just wish I would have had the money then to buy them but I am also glad that I was smart enough to wait until I started working again.
There are retired sets that I did buy that I'm glad I bought. There are retired sets that I bought that I wish I hadn't. There are no retired sets I now want but don't have.
Before the retired list comes out I always go through the catalogue and mark which sets I'd want if I knew they were retiring. When the actually list comes out, I don't even consider any set I haven't marked. This saves me $ and buyer's remorse. My stamping time, storage and budget is not limitless, and I don't need more stamps. Besides, there's new stuff coming out all the time . . .

Fabric Of Friendship. Originally it was $18.95, I paid $40 for it when I finally found it. Most of the time it was going for $75 or so. Also the Boy Scout one, I don't know what I finally paid for it, but it wasn't as bad as the other one. Get what you want now if you can afford to have retired stuff for your playtime.

That's a great idea. I am new to stamping and this is my first "retiring list." Of the 3 sets I really wanted, one I can easily give up. But I think the Bug Builders set is so adorable. And I wanted Roughing It for my husband and 2 boys. I still am fretting over whether or not I should get these sets.
Harlequin. It was a background stamp that retired either last year or the year before. It was just a whole stamp of diamonds. One of my favorite non-SU stamps is a harlequin wearing a diamond-patterened suit. Very nice and that bg stamp would have been perfect for him. My demo has it and I keep waiting for her to put it in the "things I'm letting go of basket." She told me she's never letting go of it though LOL!

Curly Christmas! I loved it but at that point like you had such a long list I didn't buy it. Then I resorted to paying double for it online. But had to have it
There was a TAC stamp that retired last year that I thought I wanted, and then decided not to get - then after I couldn't get it anymore, I realized how much I could have used it for and finding it became a QUEST! And TAC stamps are not as easy to find on E-Bay. . .to my great joyous glee, I was able to get it at a used stamp sale about a month ago, for half price, and it looked like it had never been used at all.
Michelle - TAC has a harlequin background stamp that I don't know if it is like the one SU retired, and I don't know if you would be willing to use one from a different company, but here's a link to their online catalog: http://www.theangelcompany.net/catalogwatermarked.pdf
When the catalog loads, jump to page 150. This is one of theirs that's retiring at the end of June though! I know there are TAC demos on this board that you could contact to order it if you want it, and I think their retiring stamps are on sale right now.
I'm not a demonstrator, just trying to help out someone on their own quest!
Michelle---I just bought a harlequin bg stamp last Saturday at Archivers. It is made by Paper Inspirations. It is the full size for a standard card. They call it Diamond Background #P6003.

It seems I have always had a long Wish List when the Retiring List comes out BUT I always try to be practical since the new catty will be coming out. This time I did really well and narrowed it down to only one set. The set I got was one I had ALWAYS wanted. Try to buy ONLY what you have had your eye on all year - NOT suddenly wanting it because it is retiring.
I would advise you to try to set a limit (being realistic) on what to get and THEN make sure you get your favorites. I always had a long list I wanted and always also got that list down to only 2 or three sets. Out of all the sets I DIDN'T buy that I thought I really wanted, there was only 1 that I wished I had bought. I ended up buying it on eBay for about $5.00 more.

There was a set they sold several years ago. I think it was called Games Galore, and I put off buying it --- and then it was too late. It had stamps for tic, tac, toe, and a lot of other games. It would have been a great travel or sit on a tabletop set. But alas , I blew it. ha ha.
I had so wanted Sketches when I saw it in one of the minis, but of course I didn't break down and get it. Then I thought surely it'll make it into the new catty...nope it didn't. So I thought all was lost, but one day SU! offered it on the site as one of those retired sets you could purchase for a limited time (wish they still did that) and I snatched it right up!
The one I want now and have been debating on is the Classic Convertibles. Do I or don't I? I need more masculine sets that can be used universally too...KWIM?

No, because I can always pick up the stamp sets on Ebay - usually at a greatly reduced price. That's why I haven't bothered ordering any of the retired sets for myself even though there are a couple of them I really like. I can't demonstrate with them, but I do keep a few retired sets just for fun. That's why I'm keeping my Tickled Pink set - I just love it!
It's the accessories, paper and other things that I will miss. That's why I'm going to get busy and get the Silver Kiss paper assortment just in case that is discontinued. I do wish they would give us a list of ALL the products that are retiring and not just the stamp sets.
