I've made them both ways, and the envelopes turn out looking very much the same, whichever method you use.
If you have pattern paper you aren't going to use for cards, it's nice to use it to make envelopes with the white side outside, and the pattern inside for a nice surprise.

I'm slightly confused about the if the SU diagonal plate actually fits on the Martha Stewart scoring board. I did read that it "appears" to fit. I have customers that want it and I'm still afraid to tell them yes it fits? Can anyone tell me it absolutely fits and works well?

I think I might just take some existing envelopes in sizes I want, open them up and trace onto cardstock or plastic for a homemade template. I am also going to try to use my cricut to cut some. The Just Because and some other carts have envelopes on them. I was able to figure out how to cut some of them in portrait mode using the width measurement. There are a few envelopes on the cart that are positioned differently that I haven't been able to figure out yet, as you cannot guess at all what size it will cut.
Did anyone find out for sure? It probably would fit but maybe it really doesn't matter. If you fastened a ruler along the top it would be the same thing. ...probably LOL
Everyone I talked to said yes, it fits the MS, so I ordered one. I will get it Tuesday. I can come back and let you know if no one answers before then...
I use the tutorial on the scor-pal website. I have used that tutorial for years now. I find it so easy and lovely that I NEVER purchase envelopes now. My recipients love the envelopes.

Absolutely fits perfectly! I've been using it a few weeks now and love it.
(ETA - never mind my dumb question - I just googled to find out what the SU plate looked like & now I see that I was thinking something different altogether)
Are the score grooves on the SU plate about the same width/depth as the ones on the MS board? From the photo I see of the SU board, the grooves *look* extremely fine & narrow - but it could be just the way the photo was taken. Will the tool that comes with the MS board work or do you have to get a much thinner tool?
(DUMB QUESTION - ) I'm confused - the MS Scoreboard comes with it's own diagonal plate already - so what is the benefit of buying another plate ?
OK, now that I've shown my ignorance, I'll say that I've loved using my MS Scoreboard! I just got it a few weeks ago & it is such a neat tool to have! Makes great envelopes, and as someone else already mentioned, it's a great way to use patterned papers that you can't figure out a use for.
Thanks for all the info. I know this isn't the subject, but I don't know where to post.
I have a pet peeve. I purchased four frames stamp set from s.u., and there is rarely a greeting I can find to fit inside of them. I didn't think about that when I purchased, can anyone make a suggestion for something that doesn't look squeezed in? I have a small stamp that says hugs xx, and love ya, but everytime I see a stamp, it has other things in the set and I only want the greeting! Help! ???? I looked in the gallery.
