Do any of you out there make your own teeny tassles for grad caps? I'm wanting the kind that will dangle off a 3-d grad cap, either fiber or paper, whatever! I don't know if that makes sense. :confused: I just wondered if you had some samples or a tutorial source you could share so I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel.

I have used some embroidery thread in the past and was planning on doing that again this year for my nephews card. I think I just cut some to the length I wanted and used a black brad for the cap and wrapped it around that. Sorry, I don't have more specifics than that.
Here's a card I'd CASEd from some wonderful scs stamper and used with the tricksters who come to my home for a Paper Tricks afternoon. I made all those tassels from embroidery floss, with four simple knots. There's a lark's head (double reverse half-hitch) at the top, a large overhand securing all the tassel threads, and two overhand knots securing the lark's head and spacing for securing with a brad in the center of the mortarboard.
So-- Hunting the galleries to find the source of my paper tricks mortarboard CASE, I found a couple others. I may have CASEd Dawn O-- Dostamping. She does fun stuff! Anyway, here's two others, including a link to another way to make a tassel:
Wow, y'all are good, you made an actual tassle! Not this girl, a bit of thread was sufficient to make it look right and considering all they wanted was the money inside I didn't sweat it!
I used the 2 school colors to make the tassel & wrapped it with gold metallic thread. As a dangle I used a gold confetti piece that says Congrats Grad. Was going to buy a package of confetti of the current year, but I didn't want to buy a whole package for just one tassel.

I made a large amount of Graduation announcements and I used cording found in the fabric section at Hobby Lobby. It comes in many different colors and you don't have to make anything

I make kits for six inch mini albums for some of the Project Grad kids each year and include tassles to hang on the bindings. I buy three inch fringe by-the-yard and use a strip about four inches long for each tassle. I make a loop with a piece of narrow cord, wrap the top of the fringe around it, and secure it with hot glue. Does that make sense? Really cheap and pretty easy! If anyone wants to try it but needs more clarification, let me know and I'll put up some pics or do a how-to on my blog.

First, I hope my pics show up. Second, I had my numbers wrong. That's what I get for going by memory, right? It's 4 inch fringe, and I only use a piece about 2 inches long for each tassle.
Make a loop with a piece of thin cord or ribbon and wrap the top of the fringe tightly around it, securing it with a dab of hot glue every now and then. The loop is what you'll use to hang the tassle. (Ok. Now I'm seeing one of these hanging from the rear view mirror of a Barbie car! teehee!)
You could wrap some silver or gold ribbon or embroidery floss around the top to mimic the little metal band. It doesn't have the little ball on top like a real tassle, but I've been doing this for YEARS and no one has ever said, "Hey, this isn't right!" (Before the Project Grad books I made them to attach to the certificates we gave the kids at my preschool at the end of the year. Next month a couple of those former preschoolers will graduate and are signed up to make a book at Project Grad, so they'll have both tassles!)
As long as you don't stick your fingers in the hot glue, these are super easy, and cost just pennies.

I love the tassel info shared by all of you. Thank you!! I made the card mentioned above but can't figure out how to make it lay flat. Do you just place it in the envelope and when the person opens the card the hat pops up?

Yes to the envelope thing. Our cards had the folds and an extra layer under the mortarboard, so there was plenty of bulk. As much as we burnished, they still didn't lay flat until we put them into the envelopes. Can't engineer a belly band for them... The shape's wrong.
