Foam stamps work best with acrylic paints (spread on a light coat with a sponge brush) but you can ink them, you just wont get a nice smooth image like with clear or rubber stamps. Plus I've noticed once I use paint on them they really don't take ink well afterwards.

I use ink and paint. You need to wash the acrylic paint off as soon as you use it. Also, some of my foam stamps are so flimsy that after a couple of cleaning they are kind of warped. The reason I've bought a few foam stamps was because I knew if I trashed them I wasn't out much $$.
