Default Fabric stamping - Help!!!

I had a workshop today with quilters... and they asked a very good question that I cannot answer... I know we can stamp with the craft ink onto fabric... but how do they color the images in so that it is permanent? I mentioned sharpies, but I saw someone used the chalks??? How? Is there fixative that they can spray on the fabric to make the image washable? These women had fun stamping in my realm - and they each are interested in incorporating stamping into their quilting. I told them about this wonderful wealth of resource I have here on line and I promised them I would ask y'all.

Hi!

I have stamped on fabric, but only with fabric paint. I then painted them in with paint!

You could use fabrico markers.

Never heard of chalks before. That would be interesting to know!

This is just a guess, cuz I havent tried it on fabric. When using chalks on polyshrink, you apply them with a blender pen and in the shrinking process they heat set and don't rub off. I wonder if you applied the chalk with a blender pen and ran the fabric through the dryer or under an iron if it would set in the same way. Hummm.... I will have to experiment.

I have the old Fabrico pads (replaced with StazOn I believe) and color with Fabrico markers. My guys love to make their own shirts.

I also have the Fabrico pads & markers, but have used our craft inks on fabric, too. Just iron on the wrong side to heat set. Wash the fabric before stamping as usual, just don't use any fabric softener. I stamped some undies for my nephew's birthday (he's 2) & so far, they have held up. He loved them, by the way!
