Okay, I'm looking for some retired sets on ebay and noticed that all of the current high bidders' ID's are in the same format: letter***letter. For example, 6***e or y***t or s***s. What is up with that? Is this a new thing on ebay?
Yep, a new thing. Apparently only the seller can see the true ebay identities. You will see your ebay name, but other bidders will not be able to. Hope you get what you're looking for. The real old sets go for lots of $$$.
Thanks Cynthia! I felt like I was missing something! At first I thought one person was working under a bunch of similar identities - DUH! Now I feel a little better about bidding against them.
The sets I'm looking for aren't real old, so hopefully I won't have to pay too much. We just found out we're having a baby boy, so I want to stock up on my "boy" stamps for scrapping!
Be sure to check the board here, too, there might be a set or two you are looking for. And without that ebay stress, unless you like that sort of thing.
I am glad I am not the only one that thought there was some crazy person with a bunch identities that was trying to outbid them on ebay. It took me a bit but I finally figured it out too ;)

I thought the same thing! I learned something today! Always knew this site was helpful!!
So funny this thread started. I have been bidding on ebay lately and saw the same thing, and wonder what the heck it was! I thought it might be some computer generated thing to force bids higher! Thanks for the clarification!

So does this mean that I can't look at the bidding histories of competing bidders. If I am outbid by a relatively new buyer, I always check to make sure there is no shill bidding going on.
I believe that after the auction is over you can view the bidders IDs. You just can't view them during the auction. This is to prevent others trying to offer something to a current bidder and avoid selling it on eBay-therefore eBay would lose the sale of the fees if you go around and about selling things under their noses. KWIM? :-)
Soon sellers won't be able to leave negative feedback either...this can be good or bad - because some sellers leave the same feedback you leave them even if you did nothing wrong - but if the buyer backs out, then you can't leave negative feedback. I believe this comes in May.
The changes caused an eBay strike for a week and more people have been signing up for REVOLUTION MONEY EXCHANGE (RME) - a program similar to paypal. It's free to send and receive money on RME - so I hope more people sign up for it because I hate getting fee'd from Paypal as well as eBay. You get $25 to sign up, and you get it right away.
In case you don't know, you can save FAVORITE SEARCHES and request email notification (you specify for 6 months or 1 year). By doing this, eBay will send you an email notification when a new auction is listed for the item that you're looking for. I use this feature and just love it!
I went and checked on an item I am bidding on. And while the auction is going I can click on the other bidders name and it will give me a bid history - it doesn't identify the other sellers by name, but at least I can tell if the bidder is heavily into one seller - so I guess that's okay.
eBay has really suffered lately. The amount of things listed and sold has really declined. Things just aren't selling, so they are changing up the rules and upping the fees. I think they are going to be sorry they did that.
I'm sure RME will eventually have to charge fees also. Paypal was free for awhile in the beginning.
