do you have problems with people who buy/recieve your cards complaing about the smell? If you do smoke, how do you protect your paper from smelling? Just curious as I saw on another forum where someone sent her paper order all back cause it smelled of smoke.
my mom makes clothes for my girls and doesn't smoke anywhere near her sewing room, but the clothes always arrive smelling like smoke and I can't stand it. I would return them too if I paid money for them. I would suggest clearly stating from a smoker's home.
I would guess it depends on if people smoke in their house or not. Maybe good to keep air freshners in your stamping room. I love the Wallflowers from Bath and body that plug in. I am not a smoker so just my non smoker take on it
I use to host alot of swaps here on scs and i could always tell who smoked and who didn't smoke by the smell on their cards. I use to smoke along time ago but i could easy tell. One thing i often thought might work to get rid of that smell maybe fabric softener sheets? If it was me I would not buy something if it was going to smell like stale smoke and that is not easy to tell if you smoke for people that don't smoke. I never realized all the things that stunk when i smoked myself but now when the kids have even been to someone's house that smokes i can easily smell it when they get home. I have even bought stamps off ebay before and could tell as soon as i opened them that they came from a smoking family.
I received a package the other day with some FABULOUS stamped items in it. As soon as I opened it, I felt so sick. The smell was beyond belief. This was a gift , but had I paid for the items, I would have asked for a refund and sent the package right back.
I have known a few of my friends to do trades and they have been so upset when they received their trade of cardstock and not been able to use it.
I make a point now when I do a trade or purchase that I am trading/buying from a smoke free home.
Our next door neighbors smoke and any time they send anything over to us, like M's coupons from the paper, I about fall over it smells so bad. I think paper items hold the smell for a long time-so I would suggest to smokers that they not smoke in their craft rooms!
I am an ex smoker, smoked for nearly 14 years and have been smoke free for nearly 13. The smell of smoke never bothered me when I smoked, but when I quit, it made me sick to my stomach that I have actually gotten sick smelling smoke. If I received something in the mail that reeked of cigarette smoke I would toss it straight in the trash can outside. Nothing worse than opening up a package or envelope and a nasty, gosh awful smell permiates out of it. Might as well stick a dead skunk in the thing ~ probably smells better!
I am glad that no one in my family smokes so I don't have to worry about something stinking coming from them!
If someone is selling something and they are a smoker, by all means, they need to let the buyer know ahead of time that it might smell of smoke.
If I am interested in something for sale on ebay and it doesn't specifically say from a smoke free or pet free home, I ask first.

I smoke. When I make cards, they immedatly go in a box lined w/
tissue paper w/ a few drops of liquid scent from Yankee. My sister never smells smoke and she would tell me!

My dh smokes and I do not. He used to work full time so was rarely home. I never noticed anything in particular from the house smelling - but now that I am working (and he stays home full time) I can smell it on clothes and such. I haven't ever had anyone complain about my cards though.
I'm a non-smoker who can't stand the smell of smoke. I have made the mistake of not asking before when ordering/trading and have discarded or kept the 'stuff' outside to try and get rid of the smell. I have been successful in airing out some things, but others, I have had to toss...
My dh smokes and I am contsantly worried when I send out cards or do trades. However I do keep baking soda in my stamping tool box (yes, literal Craftsman tool box with all the drawers..lol) No one I've ever sent to has ever complained of the smoke smell, then again when people come to my house they say they can't smell the smoke. Unless of course they come in while he's home. I just use a lot of febreeze and clean my carpets once a month, not to mention, I love love love candles.
I haven't read the posts yet, but I am VERY bothered by the lingering smell of smoke on things. I don't mean to be offensive, but it really grosses me out. I decided when I got my last swap back to find out if the hostess has a smoker in her house before I commit to a swap. I can't know if the other swappers smoke, but I can at least find out about the hostess. Non-smokers have a much more sensitive sense of smell, so things that don't bother smokers are quite offensive to non-smokers. Under no circumstances would I pay for something that smelled of smoke, and I would have no compunction about sending something back if it came smelling of smoke.
My mom smokes. I end up showering as soon as I get home and all of my clothes go right into the washer. So I guess I wouldn't want to pay for something that would smell like that. Besides, my youngest has asthma so I try to limit all his exposure to smoke (that's part of the reason the clothes go directly into the washer).
I smoke, but never in the house. After I finish a cigerette, I always wash my hands as the smell does linger on your fingers and can transfer to the project your working on. Also, any smokers who come to my home have to smoke outside also. That may sound like an easy solution, but if you live in one of the northern states. . . . well, it can get a little nippy!

My dh smokes. I make him smoke outside. I refuse to ride in his car, and he's not allowed to smoke in mine.
I no longer go to bingo or other events at our American Legion because I end up physically ill from the smoke. I've lost some friends because of this, but to me, my health and comfort is much more important. On the rare occasion that I do go, though, I also put everything right in the washer and have to shower/wash my hair.
I used to be a smoker... I had stopped smoking for about 6 months when mom, my sister and I went shopping on Black Friday a few years back. There was a lady standing in one aisle with me who just reeked of ciggy smoke. It was so bad. I felt terrible. I kept thinking about the year before when we had shopped together, and how I must have smelled like that to my mom and sister... no wonder we rarely shopped together before then!
I am a non-smoker and I also can't stand the smell of smoke. I always try to ask before I buy anything to make sure it's from a smoke free home. My opinion on this matter is that, I can always tell when items are from a smoking household no matter what anyone does or how they try to cover it up. Some people just don't realize how bad smoke smells.
I used to smoke. My DH still does but no one has ever smoked inside of our home. It has not been a problem for me as the smoke never was around my stamping items. I do live in Wisconsin and even in the winter everyone that comes over has to go out and freeze, even DH does.
I know it is a problem if you smoke in your home as everything gets that smeel to it. That is why we always went outside and so does everyone else.

I guess I have been lucky, because I have been in a few swaps and part of the Secret Sister program since the beginning. I have never had a smoky package come my way. I am super sensitive to smoke, and I have an allergic reaction after being in a smoky place. I would really hate to get a box with smoke smell pouring out of it. I refuse to eat at any restaurant where smoking is allowed and I also don't purchase auction items unless they come from a smoke free home.
I have recieved a handful of cards from smoking homes ( I know they're smoking because I know the people) and I would say half smell of it. However, after a couple days it aired out and I was able to display them
I have never rec'd a "smokey card" BUT I know how that is. In my old job I submitted expenses for the sales team. One of the guys smoked and when I opened his FedEx package it was like getting sucker punched it smelled SO BAD!
I told my boss about it and he didn't really "get" it until I had HIM open one of the packages.
If I had purchased something that smelled like smoke I would for SURE get my money back. That's just gross...:(

I used to smoke but ALWAYS outside and I would always wash my hands before I stamped and I have never had anyone say to me that my cards smell. I'm really sensitive myself even when I smoked it grossed me out. My MOM used to smoke in her home and even when I smoked it was gross. I HAVE NEVER SMOKED IN MY HOME (when I smoked) I guess it would depend on the situation and what I was buying and if it was a good price and coming from a smoking home if I knew I could clean it I prolly would still buy it.. LOL
I've never had that experience with paper but I know when my daughter used to go to our old neighbor's house to play I would have to air her coat when she got home. I agree with others who have said they would return things that smell of smoke. YUCK!

My DH, DD, DS-in-law and one of my DS's all smoke, but never in the house. We live in NH and I can't understand why they are willing to stand outside in frigid cold weather to smoke. I used to smoke very heavily myself, but never was willing to stand in the cold to smoke. As soon as they come in the house from smoking, it smells like they just lit up in the room. I told my DH once to stay out of the room I work in for a while after coming in from smoking. I kind of joked that I did not want my cards to stink like smoke. He understands, since he had quit for years, so knows what it is like as a non/ex smoker. I HATE the smell of anything that has been near smoke. What an awful way to receive a package.
I don't smoke nor do I allow it in my home. I also discourage people going outside to smoke while visitiing my home.
As far as getting items that may have an ordor of cigarette smoke, the same can be said for perfume on the hands of anyone that is making a card. Perfume, lotion or any kind of smelly stuff you may have on your hands or clothing while creating your cards is surely going to be transferred to the paper and such.
I've never gotten a package from a business with an odor to it other than magazines which I just trash, but have gotten personal items with smells on them. Those get trashed also even before opening.
For someone like me who is sensitive to smells, I would recommend not putting anything on the cards unless you know the recipient can tolerate fragrances.
As much as I hate it, I'd rather get a card that smelled like smoke than perfume. The smoke is easier to air out.

Just my 2 cents worth. I don't think cardmaking or scrapbooking are conducive to being around first-hand smoke or second-hand smoke. Paper is fibrous and it will absorb odors and maintain those odors within the fibers for what seems like eternity. Even if one doesn't smoke while making cards, the nicotine and oils from cigarette smoke remain on your skin for some time...I personally would not want to receive a card from a home where anyone smoked...whether it was second-hand, or done first-hand outside. It's simply not a good mix with paper crafting. IMHO

My Mother smokes, she's got a lung disease to and still does. (She lives with us)For the life of me I can not understand why she still does, but she does. I don't nor have I ever smoked - but until recent I never noticed it. Maybe because of winter and the doors and windows are all shut up? I keep an airwick plug in in every room. But I guess you just cant help but get the smell someplace.
No one has ever mentioned anything about our cards smelling. I have recently started to sell items, but I think I will put a little sachet in each package too just in case.

Wow, this has opened my eyes. Anyone who got one of my cards in a silhouette swap a year or so ago, I'm sorry!!
And I don't blame any of you one little bit. My coat stinks, my car stinks, everything stinks............it IS gross! If a smoker thinks it's gross, it can only be way worse for non-smokers.
Ugh, I say it constantly, but I really need to kick this habit!

Reason: adding a 't'
To the OP, personally, I would be more interested in responses from non-smokers rather than the smokers. If I smoked, I would want to know reactions from my customers. You have to consider the fact that most people who buy items that smell of smoke won't let the seller know if it's not a large purchase. For me, it's not worth the cost or hassle to try and return it, I just trash it. I may not tell the seller but I sure as heck won't buy any more from them.

((((((( Cathi ))))))))) it took being hospitalized for 6 days with pneumonia for me to kick it... It's not easy to do!
There are a lot of great cessation programs out there, many of them free of charge. Check with your local hospital or clinic about them if you're serious about quitting.

Good luck!
Thanks! I've tried lots of things over the years, and I don't know, it's like I'm stubborn or stupid, one of the two. I do think my time is coming....one of these days I'll just DO IT.
This thread is kind of a kick start I think.................it affects so much more than just me!
Ok, sorry for the hijack, but seriously, thank you for starting this thread, and for sharing your thoughts on this!
