Splitcoaststampers.com - the world's #1 papercrafting community
You're currently viewing Splitcoaststampers as a GUEST. We pride ourselves on being great hosts, but guests have limited access to some of our incredible artwork, our lively forums and other super cool features of the site! You can join our incredible papercrafting community at NO COST. So what are you waiting for?
Preamble....
* Last week I started a thread in the RAK group --- "Card Kits for hotwheels."
* Then I added a link in my signature.
* Now I get PMs asking, "Why won't the website give me access to the link?"
* Because you need to join the RAK -- Random Acts of Kindness -- group.
Sooooo...... Please join! * RAK is fun. You can download a list of hundreds of Splitcoast members, their birthdays and their addresses. You might get a birthday card or two from someone.
* Sign up is easy. Click QuickLinks. In the little menu click any of the Edit buttons. On the left of the page click GroupMemberships.
Now select the little button beside the RAK group. Click JoinGroup. A box pops up that asks for a "reason to join group." Type your answer. Click SendRequest.
Within a couple of weeks, the moderators of RAK will grant your membership (unless of course you say that you want to join so that you can harass Garnet and fill her email with all sorts of garbage. I'll tell Gina not to allow you to join).
Hanging my head in total shame and embarassment - what is RAK group? You'd think by now I would know!!!
Random Acts of Kindness. After you sign up you will be able to download a long, long list of names and addresses. Then you can randomly send a card to anyone on the list.
There are also a few special threads under the Random Acts of Kindness.... which makes it not so random anymore, but a great way to share images and cards with othe Splitcoast members.

You will get a PM from an administrator in about 2 weeks. They only review new members twice a month. Be patient, it is worth the wait!!!!!
Once you become a member, there are other sub-groups to join like Welcoming Committee, Birthday Committee (BRAK) and Wish RAK. Start reading about the other groups and see what is a good fit for you! I love it!!!

Thank you. I did not realize it took several weeks. I'll be patient (not my stongest attribute). THanks for the other information about the sub-groups. I'll look into them.

Oops! I answered Pia's question and then realized you all had posted before. Tried to edit or delete and got sidetracked.
My request for "Card Kits for hotwheels" is going to be moved in a few days to the Special Wish RAK Challenges" sub-forum. I had not realized just how many forums and sub-forums there are in RAK now. It has really grown a LOT since it was first begun.
Yesterday I requested to join this group. How do I know if I am "IN"?
I know a number of other folks have answered your question so I'll just fill in a few more details for you. I sent out PMs a week ago (meaning you just missed this batch) and just finished the latest update. I believe Amy will be sending out the PMs for the next batch next week, and then she'll do the update the following week. That means probably you'll have access somewhere around July 23-24 time frame.
In the meantime, here's some of the info from the RAK "rules" thread to give you an idea of what it's all about:
How to join:
Go to you user control panel (one way to get there is to click on your username at the very top right corner). On the left side you'll see the control panel. Scroll down to 3 from the bottom to Group Memberships. You'll see a list of groups to join. To join RAK click on the Join Group radio button (right most column) and then click on the Join Group button. I believe it will ask you why you want to join. Enter a little something. Then comes the hardest part.... WAITING.
We process rak requests about every 2-3 weeks and it takes a while for us to complete the process, depending on how many requests we have. We do ask that you NOT PM or email us asking when your account will be created. It just fills up our inboxes. You will receive an PM from us when we start to process your request. You know the process has been completed when you can see the RAK group forum under the User Group forum at the bottom of the forum list.
What is a RAK?
It's a Random Act of kindness that has members running to the mailbox everyday! Instead of the dreaded bills, there are nice surprises that put smiles on your face.
HOW THIS WORKS
Pick a name at random off the list and send a card.
On the envelope, be sure to write RAK- Spltcoast Stampers or BRAK- Splitcoast Stampers, Rak challenge #, Wish rak, SCS etc...
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that upon receipt of a RAK, please post a THANK YOU to the sender so they know their greeting arrived. Scan it if you wish, and upload the card in the RAK gallery for all of us to enjoy.
RAK LIST INFORMATION (screen name, name, address, Birthdate)
The RAK List will be posted and accessible on the RAK forum, in alphabetical order in three formats: Excel, Excel with filter, and Text.
Please do not confuse the OFFICIAL Rak member list and the active rak (non official) list.
You can be as active or as inactive as you wish in here.
FYI: Your information will be on the Split-coast website in a file that is PUBLISHED on the web, yet no one will see this if they are not part of the RAK group. In other words your personal information is not findable on the web.
We are not publishing any information about you that isn't already available on the internet. Please keep in mind there are various searches available that will give you an abundance of personal information with the click of a button- no one is going to go through the trouble of joining Split-Coast to hunt you down.
Having posted the above disclaimer, if there is anyone that is not comfortable with the RAK being posted on the site, please advise to have your name removed.
IMPORTANT:
We have a Welcome RAK Newbies post- listing all new member names only.
We have a Birthdays of the month post- listing all Birthday girls celebrating during the course of the month and the upcoming month as well for those that wish to get a head start.
If you have a question, post on the forum- someone will answer it!
Dont forget to partcipate in our SUB FORUMS:
The Birthday Committee- This group makes sure all Rak members celebrating B-days get a special rak!
The Welcoming Committee- This group makes sure all of the newbies get a welcome rak!
The Rak Challenge area- This group keep you all raking with really neat challenges and idea to pick people off the ever growing rak member list
and...
The extremely popular and exciting Wish rak group- So much fun to get images of stamp sets that you dont own but would like to play with!
Oh my, Kerry! Thank you so much for posting this information. I hope there will be lots more people joining RAK.
And by the way, for those of you who are still wondering about the link in my signature, here is a quote from that thread....

But Linda has Cerebral Palsy, so although she thought stamping would be a great craft for her, it became problematic. Linda can color with ease, but stamping and cutting is quite a challenge.
So here's the deal...
I will strive to keep a monthly calendar here, listing who will be sending card kits. Just post below and I will add your name. If you want to "sign up" for several months in advance, I will even send you a PM reminder.
don't have any worries on that account: you can be as active or not as you like. there are no minimum requirements to particiapte.
although I do warn you if you become part of WRAK you will be forever doomed.. bwahahahah:twisted: . My first day I had access I went through the list and found like 3 dozen people I could grant wishes to!.
I have since paced myself and only do so many per week. postage adds up after a while. that, and I started running low on white CS to stamp images on.....
Do you need to be a member of the SCS Fan Club? I know I should, and plan to some day - but lot of expenses with oldest DS in college! and youngest a Sr. in high school...
It sounds like fun - also I am just a newbie at making cards and I love it, but my work is pretty basic and I use a lot of ideas from the Wednesday design challenge. Is that a problem? I would think someone could learn a lot from a group like this.

Thanks, Carole
No. All you need to do is sign up. (see first post) No problem. Everyone is welcome.
And by the way, I have not been participating as much as I could in sending cards to individuals on the list. When I first joined, I sent a card every month. I have become lazy recently, which means that I also don't receive a lot of cards.
Since I really love getting cards in the mail, ya' think I should send more? thinking........thinking................DUH!
Ok, this is so silly, but I can't make up my mind to do this or not....there is this looming fear of something...has anyone else on the RAK list had these insecurities that you know of, and managed to overcome them or am I just forever doomed?

I promise there is no pain involved. You don't have to get shots or go see the dentist or or even stub your toe first. RAK is really truly PAINLESS!
I hemmed and hawed for a while too.. and then once I bit the bullet..I was doomed.. because it is so much FUN. I think I lasted three days before joining WishRAK.
I am enjoying it because through W-RAK I am able to try new stamps without breaking the budget. Through them I have found Hedgies and Fluffles and House Mouse and discovered there are other companies out there that offer some way cool embellishments( Dew drops, anyone?!)
I am also finding it a nice way to pass along some extras that I have without filling up a landfill. its like freecycle for the stamping set!.
with several thousand members, even if you are JUST starting out and only have a few stamp sets or a few accessories, you can almost always find somebody to grant a wish to.
or you could just become part of the birthday RAK and send Birthday cards every month.
it's really up to you how much involvement you want.

Oh, I was totally unsure about it at first and now look at what I'm doing!
Part of the problem is that there's not much info available ahead of time about how RAK works and that scares people that they might get roped into something with lots of time and/or resource requirements.
It's totally up to you how much you participate so if you join and decide you don't want to do anything, you can 1) ask to be removed from the group or 2) just lurk. And as far as resource requirements, the general RAK group doesn't have any specifics about what supplies you can/can't use.
Now, if you decide to join the WRAK sub-group, there are a few requirements so that high quality stamped images are produced. However the requirements are not strenuous (IMO). For example, there are limited papers that are "acceptable" but the list includes Georgia Pacific 110lb from Walmart (you can't get much cheaper than that) and Hammermill White 110 weight as well as SU paper, papertreyink white and CTMH white.

HTH,
Kerry
WRAK stands for Wish Random Acts of Kindness. That sub-forum is not actually "random." You can ask for specific images that you would like someone to send to you. Then you send images to others.
I have found some of the Wish Lists and challenges a bit confusing. I really prefer the simple, original RAK... just send a card to someone, truly randomly, someone you do not know.
Wish RAK is my fav!! It's so much fun. It's nice since I can participate whenever I have free time. Unlike a swap there is no pressure at all, no deadlines. Gotta love that. Plus it's allowed me to try before I buy.

Ok, I did sign up so will wait for the invite - looking forward to it. Wish RAK caught my interest too, as there are many images I would think I would like to try, but may not want to purchase a stamp for. I was worried about the 'quality' that would be wanted as far as paper went, cause I was afraid it would be limited to only SU products, and my white card stock is generally wal-mart stuff, so you eased my mind on that one. Of course I don't mind being el cheapo for myself, but I would never want to be that way when helping someone else - LOL and wasn't sure what I would be getting into. Would always try and get them the best I had to offer
OK - I'm liking the sound of the RAK!
But as I live in the UK would it be fair of me to expect anyone to pay the extra postage costs?
We have RAK members from all over the world. I remember seeing someone from Israel join in one of the last batches and we have a fair number from the UK already as well as Canada, India, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.
Remember, it's all voluntary so if someone doesn't have the resources to mail internationally, they don't have to.
