I have a Cricut Expression and a Cuttlebug. They serve two differ purposes for me but they can easily work together.
I got the Cricut Expression because I wanted to have to most features possible. I hate when I buy something and later on realize that I should have got the better one. So I did it right the first time on this one!
I'd really like the Expression, but I can get the personal one for $99 at Jo Ann, w/ free shipping.
Why would I want the Expression compared to the cheaper one?
I have an Expression and a Big Shot and I love them both! I use the Big Shot for cutting and embossing my Nesties, cutting Cuttlebug dies and embossing with Cuttlebug folders, and cutting with Sizzix dies. I like that you can cut a wide range of materials with the Sizzix like fabric, felt, craft foam, thicker chipboard.
But then I love the Cricut (and you'll NEED Design Studio too!) for cutting TONS of different shapes! The Expression is really great for cutting bigger stuff like boxes and bags and there are a lot of creative people out there making really cool .cut files!
I just sold my Expression and decided to go back to the Original Cricut. I was going to buy the $99 one for my daughter but I am keeping it...I decided I love the size more, and I only once in a year cut anything smaller than 1" with the expression. All the other options were useless to me, and I never cut anything larger than a half sheet anyway.
As far as the Big Shot...I have that too...for entirely different reasons. I use nesties and do dry embossing...etc.
You really can't compare the Cricut to a manual die-cut machine as they are so different. But if I had to start over and choose ONE...I would take the Big Shot any day.

It depends on what you want to do with it. The personal is great for scrapbooking and cardmaking. The bigger the better for larger projects.
I have a Cricut and a Cuttlebug. I use them both. I love the embossing plates, but the Cricut has a lot of variety on a cartridge.

i got the cricut expression (and the SCAL program is in the mail to me as I type) and also the cuttlebug.. LOVE mycuttlebug as that was my firstborn.... LOL
Oh i LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE SCAL!
Ive found some really good sites with FREE svg files
and if you go to http://forums.surecutsalot.com/index.php
youll find LOTS of help in creating your own images to use with your cricut.
I have both DS and SCAL but I use SCAL more often.
I have a Cricut (original version) and a Big Shot. I use my Big Shot all the time. The Cricut collects dust. I wonder if my Cricut can hold some hangers like my treadmill does?
I have a Cricut!!! I was totally enabled by that infomercial! LOL....I would probably like mine more if I used it more...the last time I had it out and turned on was in November for Christmas Card making and I still barely even used it! *sighs* I'm thinking it has more to do with my laziness than it has anything to do with the Cricut itself. I have the baby bug, but I'm definitely wishing I had just splashed out and gotten the BIG bug as it can do everything the small bug can and MORE! I really love the cartridge that makes bags and boxes, I used that a lot when hosting a bridal shower for my cousin. I made little boxes filled with candy as guest favors!
