I have never submitted anything to any publications and am considering doing so. What is the protocols, do you only submit projects you have never shared or can you submit those as well? I looked through guidelines but didn't see anything on it.
I've often wondered what the rules are around this as well, however I don't think I'd ever submit anything as I don't feel it's publishing worthy but huge kudos to those who are brave enough and best of luck to them as well.

As Debbie mentioned - check the magazines submission calls that you are submitting to, not all calls follow the same guidelines. Some online magazines allow you to submit work that has already been posted on the web, but ask that you remove it if it's accepted for publication. Other magazines want work that's never been published anywhere - just be sure to read their fine print. Good Luck!
As mentioned, some places are fine with you submitting stuff that you've shared in online galleries or your blog but ask you to remove it if they accept the project for publication. Personally, I just find it too confusing to try to keep track of where I might have uploaded things (here, blog, stamp company's gallery, other forums etc) in order that I can delete them if necessary so I tend not to upload anything I'm going to submit. If it's not picked up, then I can always share it online later
Just wanted to add a note of encouragement to wenchie and anyone else who eventually wants to publish but doesn't feel they are deserving or good enough yet. Sometimes we are our own worse critics. I'd say to go ahead and start submitting. You never know when your style might be the right fit for what an editor has in mind for a particular issue. You can't always tell ahead of time.
But the most important reason to start going through the submission process is that you learn so much by doing it. As long as you don't set yourself up to be crushed by rejection, the whole process is a plus and helps you to grow as a designer.
What do you have to lose? Go for it.
