Do you color with colored pencils? I am trying to learn shading and would like to see some of your art done in colored pencils to get an idea on how to do it. Do you know any tutorials online that can help? Thanks!
Any art store would have Gamsol (name brand) or other odorless mineral spirits (OMS). I use OMS that I got from the paint section at Walmart. What kind of pencils are you working with?
I use mostly coloured pencils in my work. Prisma mostly but have even used laurention and crayola and OMS. I really love the look without a whole lot of effort.
I am using Koh-i-noor and I have some regular ol crayolas. I have watercolor pencils too. I'd love some prisma's but I can't afford them. One day! I just need to figure out how to shade using them. I have thrown away about six things now as the shading isn't right and I am a perfectionist when it comes to coloring. I don't know why, I just am. hahah!

GypsyRose that video was really good, thank you for sharing. I did it right along with her and it was easy to follow and my little flower is cute not as good as hers yet, but it's cuter than it was.

I think there could be some value in a brief overview of the different kinds of leads in colored pencils. I was using very hard lead because I didn't know any better. :rolleyes:

I have all the Prismacolor pencils and the Derwent watercolor pencils and feel like all I know how to do is color like a little kid would. I've been trying to watch demos and learn, but I still don't know much. So include everthing you know, lol.

I have always wondered about the various brands of colour pencils. Maybe you can do a comparison. You don't have to buy the colour pencils if you don't have it, borrow from someone who has. Another would be the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of lead - the soft and the hard, the kind of effect each turn out on different kinds of paper like watercolour paper vs cardstock.
I have been doing lots of video tutorial viewing since November 2010. Go to You Tube and look for videos on topics such as colored pencils, shading, etc. There are many tutorials on coloring. I have learned a lot and found good understandable tips.
Practicing these techniques on basic shapes such as circles, squares etc. is helping me improve. Good luck! I am excited at working on these techniques to make my cards look more professional.

Right now Im having trouble choosing colors to work with so that my colored images have depth and not end up looking flat. With Copics I know I can choose markers that are numbered nearly the same (for exp. YG95, YG97, YG99) to color leaves but Im not sure how I would pick the pencils to get that effect? Does that make sense, lol?
I was playing around the other day coloring a girl image with green eyes and discovered that if I add a little dark blue (901-Indigo Blue) to the upper corners of the eyes, it really made it pop! I was amazed. I'd like to learn more tips like that too� ;)

I spent so much money on copics and went back to pencils, so thought I would pop in to let you know they do indeed have online classes~~go to Color Me Creative Classroom - A place to learn all about Copics, Art & Other Crafts and hover over class/info at the top of the page, you will find pencil classes by Marti. If you visit her blog: Pez-a-Doodle Designs, you will find some examples of her pencil work @ the top of the page, she's excellent. They also have started a live chat every Wed. night, and there are groups to join as well. I went to the chat last night, and it was small and very informative~~I was having a problem finding some colors and Marti got back to me right away with the answer! I think the more you branch out, you will find a great network of pencil lovers! HTH, and I look forward to seeing you in the chat room!
Thanks everyone! Keep the questions coming! It really helps me to be able to collect information with purpose when I know what the major questions and needs are. Here's a quickie for you, some images I was playing with earlier, thinking about shading and colors...
The top fish was colored with sort of 'gradient' colors - warm colors, but not all yellows - going from the yellow to yellow-orange, red-orange and a reddish brown. The second was done in all yellows, just darker shades of yellow as I went on. When I color, I start with the lightest color and create a base, then determine where my shadows will be strongest... those are generally toward the bottom of the image, in a part of an image where something appears to be behind something, or part of the image that would be further away from you if you were sitting in front of it. So I find those areas first, then work my medium colors out from those points, leaving my base color alone where the highlights would be (areas that would be closer to me, rounded out toward me, or higher) blend, then add the deepest tones beginning in those points as well, but not pulling the color out so far. Later I'll have more step-by-step diagrams so you can see better what I mean.

Hi, Cassandra -- Before you buy Gamsol, have you tried baby oil for blending? That tip has been shared elsewhere on the forums here, and I prefer the baby oil. I've explained the blending method in this blog post: Angels Landing Digital Stamps � Colored Pencils
Sometimes baby oil is sold in a small bottle, about 3 oz, in with the travel-size products.
Where is the best place to buy Prismacoloured pencils, the town I live in doesn't have them available!

Judi, I haven't tried baby oil, I don't know how to use it. I don't know how to use any of the oils. haha!

Hi there! Prismas are sold at Dick Blick, and Dini has a link on her blog to get there. Jerry's Artarama sells them for .88 apiece. I'm starting to switch over to DW Colorsofts, they seem to blend better. DW Studios are really hard and so great for shading, but I do not use them as a base. I just ordered some Faber-Castell Polycromos, so will weigh in when I ge them~~HTH!

Starting Sunday and lasting all week, Michael's is having buy one colored pencil set get one for a penny. They have Prismacolor pencils, Derwent Coloursoft, Faber Castle, and Art Sort and Generals. Don't know how good Art Soft and General pencils are but I really like Coloursoft and Prismacolor pencils. My Prismacolors I have for years so they're made in America but I've heard some people say they don't see a difference in the Prismacolors made in Mexico and other people have said they don't blend well. If anyone is interested in taking advantage of this sale, I'd go Sunday because they will probably go fast.
The biggest tip I have is to start with a large tin of colors. My husband got me the 48 count Prismacolor pencils as a gift. I quickly discovered that I wanted more color options. It's more expensive to purchase by the individual pencil to complete the set. I'd recommend at least the 72 pc or 120 pc. when you can get them on sale.
I've used colored pencils since I started stamping -- I sometimes use Copics but I always go back to pencils. I got my Prismas on Ebay -- I've just recently started buying other brands such a Caran D'Ache & Polychromos. I actually use Goo Gone rather than Gamsol -- I can find it at the Dollar Store & it works just as well.
