So, I've decided to merge the stamping world with scrapbooking. I know all about the acid free need, but what ink is the best for stamping on photos (ie it will stay on and not smudge or refuse to dry) IN scrapbooks?
Of the several I've tried...Stewart Superior's India Ink Black - permanent, fade-proof, archival. DYE ink. I haven't found a white ink other than StazOn, and not terribly pleased with it. I believe all of Tim Holtz's Distress Inks will work.

I haven't tried this yet but I heard the Tim Holtz Distress Inks will work well for this application.
One word of advice....if you're printing your own photos at home I've had problems with the ink lifting off my paper when I stamped on it. I changed photopapers and it works better. You might want to test on a photo first.
Professionally printed photos work fine.
Oh and yes you can use distress inks. I took a class on distress inks and you can use them to actually even tint your black and white photos. Very cool effect!

Thanks for the great idea of using distress inks. I have a few B&W photos that would look great in a sepia tone!
I use Stazon, Versamagic, or Memento inks all with good results. They seem to dry quickly enough on my photos for me. I don't print my photos at home. I just order them from a couple of online sources.
Ranger's Distress inks are another great ink with lots of technique possibilities. If you scroll down the page on the Distress Ink link, they talk about how to use them on photos.
While I've never stamped on a photo for a scrapbook, and thus have never worried about archival issues, I have recently been stamping on photos to make cards and I use StazOn. You do need to still work quickly and carefully because the photo is essentially gloss card stock and if you're not careful, the ink will smudge.

The Black Staz-On is great but the what isn't very opaque but plain ol' white acrylic paint works very well. Just be careful with eather method that you dont let your stamp slip on the slick photo surface and be sure to clean your stamp (i use an old toothbrush and water) immedaitly after using the paint!
