This is my first post on Split Coast, although I have been visiting for years. I am currently debating to become a Demo or not. I buy a great deal of SU, to the point that I don't really have to have a "Party" my order alone is usually over 200 dollars or more and I order at least once a month.
Becoming a demo make's sense to me for the amount I buy alone, and the fact that I hate waiting to get my cataloges and not being up to date on the latest information. I only use SU product, as I am purest and like that everything coordinates.
The only problem is, as I don't see myself being super aggressive about actually Demoing. I have two close friends who demo, and we all have the same friends. I see myself doing a lot of workshops or stamp-a-stacks.
Any thoughts?? I hate to do it and not be committed. But at the same rate I love SU so much...I can hardly stand it.
That's the great thing about this business...you can do as much business or as little as you like.
There are demos who never do workshops and just buy for themselves or for a few friends and family and those who have events scheduled every week. It's really up to you...if all you do is buy for yourself (and as you say, you are spending enough to make your minimums all by yourself), then go for it!
If you can make the quarterly minimums on your own, go for it.
Some questions to think about, though: Do you currently buy from your 2 friends who are demos? Will they be upset if you stop buying from them? If you sign up under one of them, will the other be hurt? Do you plan on approaching the same group of friends to attend your workshops? Will that take business from your other friends? Will that be too many stamping events for your group of friends and will it cause friction in your group?
If you are buying that much you NEED to become a demo and get a discount!! You don't have to do any workshops if you don't want to. There are great benefits to being a demo. I highly recommend it!!

same here, i signed up to be a demonstrator in march, and since then i have only sold to um, myself! hehe, i have talked to some people about wanting products, but nothing as of yet. i can make the minimums, its only $100 a month, which as you know is not hard!
i say go for it! you can find customers later! i'm addicted to stamping already, or shopping for stamps or both! hehe:p

Take care!
The two friends are sisters. And I am not sure how the one is going to feel. Although, her sister would be my upline and is the one who is encouraging me to do it. Knowing me, I will still buy stuff from her. You know when she has to get a certain order amount, and can't...or when She is just ordering a few things, and I need paper or something. We're very close so hopefully it won't be a big deal.
I have also went back and forth about the idea of becoming a demo.
Currently, I do not spend $100 a month on SU supplies, but I sure do on everything else stamping and scrapping related. I'm sure I could take some of that money I spend at Michael's and Hobby Lobby and transfer it over to SU!
Here's my question. I understand how the hostess sets work, but do you actually get cash from SU? Or are you just getting free product money?

Thanks for your answers in advance!
Basically we get 20% of the price of the products we sell, which is called "instant income". So a customer buys a $27.95 stamp set from me. I get to keep $5.59 of the money she gives me and the rest, along with the shipping and tax the customer pays, I pay to SU!
When I buy for myself, I also pay only 80% of the retail price. But unlike a lot of DS companies, I can also get hostess benefits on my own orders. So if I put in a $150 order, I not only pay only 80% of the retail price, I also can get $15 in free product plus a hostess set. And during Sellabration, I also reap my own free SAB sets with any orders I put in.
After that, based on my sales, I can earn an additional percentage called "volume rebate". And I can also earn downline commissions, based on what my downline sells and what I sell myself.
I think the way it goes is, if you as a demo sell at least 300 per month then you make a commission, real cash, depending on how much over you sell. Other wise if you just order 100 per month or under, you get an instant discount of 20 percent off your order.
I signed up to sell to myself. A few friends saw my cards at work and wanted to learn to stamp. I now have four people who order from me, one receives my discount since she was going to sign up as well but we each couldn't make $300 a quarter on our own. I know have once a month stamping workshops at my house and I do parties. Thankfully I don't think anyone wants one. My mom will occasionally have a catalog party in which I'll give her fun samples to show off.
Hey! I say go for it!! That's one of the great things about Stampin' Up!, if you buy the starter kit and give it a go and it doesn't work out then you don't have to sell anything back or give anything back. You would only be out your initial investment, which contains all kinds of fun stuff that you can continue to use!! It's also soooo much fun! and you can put in as much or as little effort as you want into selling! Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions that you want specific answers to or even if you just need some opinions on things!

Can anyone tell me where on the SU website do you find info on becoming a demo? At one point someone here had said it is under Specials and Promotions, but I can't find anything!!
Thank you!! I guess my question is... if you already have items in the Starter Kit can you switch them for something else? I'm sure this has probably been asked on here before and don't mean to threadjack

oh yes you can definately switch out the stamp sets, (for the same priced ones or less) you can change the paper assortments as well

The items you cannot switch out are such basic items/tools that i'd just keep them as inventory and sell them off to new customers. I'm sure you'd run into someone who wants the rubber scissors or a versamark pad! There's a thread on here listing all the contents of the kit and what's exchangeable. I'd link to it here, but i'm still new and figuring out this site. If I can figure it out, i'll post the link...

Another use for the extra stampin scrub, scissors, etc. is that should you do workshops or whatnot, more than one will make it easier for everyone to get more done. I already have a lot of the 'set-in-stone' supplies, but figure it'll make stamping in a group better as we won't be passing around the scrub, etc. And I would feel totally comfortable loaning out a pair of the scissors to a potential customer...they'd see how great they are and hopefully buy some!
The discount is just enough to cover shipping and tax in most places. So at least you would not be paying that on top of the retail prices. And I don't agree that you would be upsetting your friends, I think you would be in the sisterhood if you know what I mean. It's a good idea for you.
