Default Ask Beate - Framelit dies

Judi has a suggestion for this weeks Ask Beate question:

Quote:
The best way to load the Big Shot is this: platform totally closed, cutting plate, cardstock, framelit with cutting edge DOWN, second cutting plate. This allows you to cut out a stamped image easily. A Post-It note does a great job of holding the framelet in place, should that be necessary. Just thought I'd share this to help others. The method you suggested doesn't allow you to position the framelit over an image easily.

How do you do it so you emboss instead of cut with the framelit?

This is how I always run my dies through. I prefer to see where the die is going to cut.

Do the framelets emboss? I know some of the sizzix dies cut but are not made for embossing, so I just wondered if the framelets emboss. Thanks!

I checked youtube and it looks like you can't emboss the cut outs like you can the nestabilities. Am I wrong? How to Cut and Emboss with the Framelits - YouTube

Lydia (understandblue) said in another forum that she used the No More Shims mat from ScorPal (?) to emboss with the hearts framelits.

I know some SU demos have shown how to emboss using the Framelits. Angie Kennedy Juda showed her method on her Jan 9, 2012 blog.

You do need several different kinds of mat so hope you have something that will work.

If you want the debossed side (non indented side) to be on the card front, just flip the c/s over.

Good luck!

When I think of embossing with dies like this, I'm talking about embossing the cut out piece, like the spellbinders do. Do these do that? From the tutorials I watched, it looks like you can emboss the image into a piece of cardstock, but I couldn't see anywhere that you could emboss the cutout. If there's a tutorial, I would love to see it if anyone would be so kind as to post it for me. Thanks!

Sorry, I misunderstood what you wanted to emboss. I don't think you can emboss the cut out image because the Framelit die cut ridge is right along the edge so there is no 'lip' like on a Spellbinder die.

Thanks. That was what I was thinking too. I have some Sizzix star dies and I can't emboss them like spellbinders so that's what I wondered about the framelits...

The lip is on the outside of the Framelit instead of the inside, so if you want to emboss the edge of the piece that you cut the shape out of (around the edge of the opening) Framelist DO emboss that...makes a nice framed opening for diorama cards or as a mat for a stamped image.

i always tape my dies down so i can then turn the whole thing over and cut with the cutting edge face up. this means i don't have to move anything if i then want ot emboss. i also have turned my platform over on the BS so that the tabs are on the bottom. this means i can just drop the tab down and add the embossing mat to emboss without having to remove the cutting plates from the platform to switch over.
