My son is a woodworker, he's fourteen and does scroll saw art and I am a mixed media artist. We would like to combine our art together and have a shop.
Every name we've thought of is taken. I've looked on Thesaurus for other ways to use words. Not finding anything that flows. I'd like some of your ideas if you have any.
We thought of:
B and C Designs
Sawdust and Glitter
Sawdusted Glitter
Red Barn Designs
My DS was looking for names for his band and came across a site (band name generator) or something like that. Not sure if it would help or not, but you could check it out. I think he put in some words and it would generate some names for him....
Are the names you like taken by companies doing similar work??
When I was looking for a company name, I did searches to make sure there weren't any negative associations for one thing. (Let me just say, there are reasons I did NOT choose Shady Tree Lane for my company ;) ;). )
Beyond that, I didn't want a name that was used for a similar product. There are photography studios and art galleries I've seen with "Shady Tree Studio," but there is no mistaking them for stamp companies, plus they are in other parts of the country.
The only thing is that if you want to file dba papers, you won't be able to use the same name as another business in your county - but I'm sure you wouldn't want to anyway.
I like the sawdust/glitter combination... but are most of your designs glittery? Red Barn Designs sounds very cool to me!!!
I made a list of words that conjured up images I liked and my husband and daughter helped me whittle it down. My art is primarily inspired by nature so I went with a nature theme.
Is there a feature of your home/studio -- like 'yellow house' or 'big willow' that you could use? Or the area you live - river? mountain? farm? Some of my favorite company names are not literal translations to what they produce. Think about the style you like to create as well... or is there a primary wood type he uses?
I'd be tossing around terms like expressions, design, studio, art, inspiration/inspired . . . wood, timber, rustic/elegant (depending on your style or the type of wood items), and then try out combinations of those.
Good luck! Please let us know what you decide on so we can see what you make ~ and I hope you find something you both love. It will become part of company's identity so you are wise to give it serious consideration!!
I love your blog banner...beautiful! How about: The Rock, Paper and Scroll Saw? It combines your three loves, but maybe it's too silly? I do like Sawdust - I'd keep working on that angle!

Thanks for your help.
I too like Sawdust and Glitter.
Random thoughts and brainstorms here:
Your tools consist of paper which comes from trees along with the sawdust of course.
When I was in Europe year before last, the Eternity Tree, or Tree of Life, was very popular. https://www.google.com/search?q=eter...w=1280&bih=628
Most of the names were taken by GoDaddy.com that we liked so I figured I'd keep looking. Sawdust and Glitter is taken and no I don't use a lot of glitter, but I do use at times. Being a mixed media artist I use all types of things so I kinda didn't want it to be specific to one area because as we all know interests in our creativity change so I'd like a name that will go with whatever we'd like to have in there.
I love Red Barn Designs but of course it's taken and so is blue barn hahaha! I will continue looking. Thank you again and if you come up with more ideas, please share them.
My son actually said the other day in the car when he said Sawdust and Glitter, I said oooo I like it, keep thinking and he said Glittered Sawdust...I said I loved it, but I am not sure if I could make a shop out of it, ya know. When I think of a name I think of how the logo for a site and shop name would look on a sign. Any ideas on how I could make the logo look for a website, if I used Glittered Sawdust? Thank you again so much ladies!
Oh wow Karen, that's a good one too and Holly that's cool too! See it helps to ask to get other people's ideas as these are all great! Thank you ladies sooo much!
A couple more ideas for you:
Art On A Limb
Bark 'N Art
Personally, I don't care for the use of the word "sawdust" because it sounds deconstructive to me, contrary to what you're doing - something constructive.

I've been thinking on all the things you've suggested. I would like a name that doesn't pertain to any of the art we're doing.
The one I really like Red Barn Designs, the .com, .net and .biz are taken. I am still at a loss. I also like 316 Designs and that's taken too and B and C Designs is taken too. Gracious.
The one I want has to have a good flow for me. Gosh, I didn't know this would be this complicated.
What about B and C Red Shed Designs? Or could you use some combination of the names that you like but are not available? Or use the word art rather than the word design - Red Barn Art by B and C? B and C Red Barn Art?

Hmmm, I've been adding names from the ones that I like that are taken and they don't seem to flow so well. I will add these to my list too, thank you Becky.

I like the name a bunch! I have no idea what a scroll saw even looks like, but could you make your logo show a "jazzed" up, glittered version of the saw and put the name underneath?

Where do you live? My family had a shop in a tourist town in the 70's. We used all C letters in the name. We lived in Cripple Creek, Colorado. Our shop name was Craft and Collectors of Cripple Creek Colorado. We made a cool sign in old time font and it was well received!
Do a play on letters or acronyms and perhaps spell out your desired name with an Acronym?
Add an adjective. I worked in a little burger joint on a two lane highway of a town whose population was 800. The stand first started as a vegetable stand. The owners farmed the veggies and sold them. As they got too old to farm, they made it in to a burger joint. However, the stand was a little (REALLY little) red barn. The official name of the stand was "Stephany's Garden" (the owners' last names), but it was always known as "The Little Red Barn".
I've been following all of these suggestions and so impressed with the ideas!!
And I LOVE Blue Lily Designs! Especially because it has meaning to you. You'll be able to convey the nature of the product in a logo design, and any kind of promotional material you do -- by using your actual art, woodgrain, etc.
