Default wood blocks for mounting?

I have had several people tell me they save their rubber "trimmings" and mount them to use for stamps. Where do you get the wood blocks to mount them on?

I teach a "hands on" arts and crafts class at our homeschool academy and had the shop teacher cut up some wood blocks for us and the kids(grades K-3) made their own stamps. I'm not sure if they ever use them, but they had fun making them. So if you know someone good with wood... Kathy

I've made a number of my own "stamps" from the extra rubber (... I just made a great one that looks like a harlequin bg from the extra pieces on more petal prints). It's such a waste to throw those big pieces away!! Anyway, I use a number of things to mount them...
1. For a large one like the one I just mentioned, I'll buy a $1 stamp from AC Moore or Mikes (the cheepest I can find) and heat it for 10 secs in the microwave, then peel off the yucky stamp from the bottom and the clear cover with the image from the top, then mount my re-cut scraps. Then I use stazon to stamp the image on a piece of clear packing tape, or a permanent label, and voila! ... a new stamp.
2. For smaller images, like my own set of shapes, I used the bags of wooden blocks that come hanging in the wood section of mikes. In fact, I often glue those blocks together with a little tacky glue (being careful to have a flat surface to line allign them first)
3. For little bitty ones, like the tiny stem off my strawberry or something I've separated from the main stamp I use a small cork (also available at Mikes). ..I got that idea from a friend!
4. If you know someone who does any wood work, sometimes they have little scraps that they'll give you.
5. The most unusual source I've used was that I raided my kids wooden block set (it's ok, they're 10 and up now) and found a few that were just the right size for making a stamp. I used long strips to make a striped block, random rectangles to do a BG etc. FUN!

My DH saws wood planks for me - size made to order!! I sand the edges and Voila!! I use them for the foam-backed stamps I have purchased on sale (especially sentiments) from Michaels and Jo-anns. I use fun-foam and rubber cement to glue the rubber to the foam and the foam (after I have trimmed it neatly!!) to the wood. I have had some a couple of years now and had no problems. I know that I'm real lucky having a DH who will do this for me.
