Maybe the sponge is the same as the Ranger Cut-N-Dry Foam Stamp Pad?

No, it is not. The sponge Dee uses for inking is called compressed sponge and they are super dense. They used to come in a pack of six or so and are about 1x1x3 inches. I have some but over time they have become too hard to use and some have even flaked into dust. The Cut-n-Dry Foam is very soft with a fabric-like cover to use for making your own ink pads, comes in a sheet about 8x10 inches. If I see any new compressed sponges for inking I will post here.

Aren't they kind of like the make-up sponges (the kind cut into wedges) only rectangle in shape?

I'm happy to see that these are still for sale somewhere. I used to shop in Dee's retail stores, then in their warehouse but now it is so hard to find official Dee stuff. Thanks for doing all the leg work for me and the OP.
