Question Unmounting Stamps

Can anyone please tell me what the point of unmounted stamps are? How does it work? Does it hurt the stamps???? I hope you can help! I feel really out of the loop! Thanks!

I am contemplating unmounting my SU wood mounted stamps, and as far as I can tell, the "point" is to save space. The wood takes up so much more room than just the flat rubber, or rubber with foam.

It's a personal preference. I prefer unmounted because I feel like I can see better where exactly my stamped image is going to end up when using the clear stamp blocks where as when using a wood mounted stamp, I feel like I'm guessing exactly where my image will end up. The fact that they save on space is just an added bonus to me.

editing to add: you microwave each stamp for 10 seconds to loosen up the adhesive and then peel the rubber off. I doesn't hurt the image.

This is a topic that has been discussed many times in this forum. You might want to search for unmounting stamps and read the existing threads. There are pros and cons and as jenny said it is a personal preference. I've remounted mine to EZ Mount because I have several hundred SU sets and they take up a lot less space when they are not mounted on wood.

And so that DH doesn't really realize how many stamps you have! Hee Hee!

(although my DH recently looked in my stamp cabinet at the pictures on the front of the drawers and said "You must have thousands of dollars worth of stamps here". I just said "probably"! Didn't want to say how many thousands!)

And another good thing, unmounted stamps are a lot lighter in weight than the mounted ones. The weight of the wood mounts used to keep me from taking stamps to get togethers for scrapping or card making, but now that I have unmounted all of mine (and I have only a drop in the bucket compared to some of you), I can literally take all of mine with me. I use the CD cases and am quite pleased with this method of storage and I keep them in those 2 drawer thingys you put under your sink for cleaning things.

I've been thinking of keeping my new sets that I haven't mounted yet as unmounted...maybe painting the backs with Tack It and sticking them inside the plastic SU box for storage. I wish SU would go to unmounted, or at least give the option between both so we wouldn't even have to get the wood.

Anyone have any great ideas on what to re-use the wood for? I hate to throw it out - I was thinking of saving it in case I'd ever sell my stamps but I really don't need more things in storage either! LOL

I saved some of my larger blocks for making sandwiches for die cutting machines. No recipe for sandwich, just sometimes I use my die cutting machines for embossing folders and the larger wooden blocks and cork sheets work great.
Does this make sense?

I personally like mounted stamps. I have several unmounted sets, but I find it is a pain to mount them on blocks every time I want to use them. Space is an issue, but for now, I am leaving mine mounted. If I have something tricky to stamp where lining up is super important, I just use the stampamajig. Let us know what you decide.

I just started unmounting and I love it. I used to stay away from wood mounted stamps becuase I am so so so limited on space. I just didn't have the room for them so I used acrylic. Now that I have discovered unmounting I am in love with it. I can have tons of stamps and keep them in a small space. Now that some companies offer their stamps as mounted or unmounted I don't have to pay for the block only to take it off later I can just purchase the stamp no block allowing me to buy more stamps. Plus I love the ability to see where I am placing a stamp.

I usually collect a bunch of blocks and then offer then for the price of shipping. Sometimes I used them in my chiminea too.
