Coming onto the stamping scene in just the last year, it's all new to me! I watched a Jann Gray video where she used liquid applique as snow on trees. I recently used micro beads in the center of a sunflower stamp. Christie Tomlinson uses rub ons in her mixed media projects. I had no idea these were "out of style." Oh well, I'm usually on the trailing edge of most trends anyway.

I started art journalling to use a lot of my supplies because they are "too nice" to let go of etc....
For those of you who think eyelets are out - guess what I seen in Joann's today? A large tag punch that has an eyelet setter on one end. It was expensive at about $30.00. If I use eyelets, I prefer to use the hammer. As for all the other items, well, they still exist in my cabinets. Hate to throw anything away.
I find that because I'm now heavily into mixed media (MM), I've been able to use up a lot of odd bits and pieces. I really like glass bead gel and now I'm pressing my micro beads into modeling paste and even eyelets have found new life in my projects.
I don't think flowersoft is going out of style but I lost interest in it and now I'm incorporating it my MM projects and covering brads for flower centers.
I won't replace these items as I use them up, but it does feel good to have a use for them.
I will be doing a major purge of crafting supplies in the next couple of months (defined as getting rid of 75% of what I own). The following will be leaving my house because I just don't use them and they no longer fit my style:
Prima flowers
Almost all of my ribbon (I will keep twine and maybe seam binding)
Brads (regular and decorative) and eyelets
Most embossing folders
Almost all of those Martha Stewart border punches (with matching corner punches, of course)
Microbeads
Regular beads and charms
Buttons
Stickles
Old patterned paper
Lots of stamps
I got rid of the mulberry paper, decorative scissors, decorative border rulers (for tearing paper), metal stencils and a light table in the last purge.

I still like the look of eyelets even though I've really never used mine! The people I send cards to have no idea they are out ( and I guess they wouldn't care if hey were).
I may get them out still!

The thing is - just when you think something is out the "stamping/cardmaking elite" use it and it is the product of the season again. Case in point the hand spritzing tool by Tim Holtz.
So if you like it use it, if not send it to someone who will and make room for things you like.
BTW to read here you would think that stickers are no longer being used in scrapbooking, but I have watched many "haul" vids of scrapbookers and they are still into the stickers. So it all just depends.
This whole thing reminds me of when I was in school back in the 80's and the "in" shoe was a blucher. The exchange student from Australia bought some and promptly said there was no point in taking them back to Australia as her friends would laugh at her shoes!

Here's one for the graveyard: flattened bottle tops.
I never got into that fad but, I remember going to crops where women were crazy about those!
Just read a blog a week ago where a woman was making something to decorate her daughter's locker with them... I never got into them for cards but could see them being fun for locker decor!

I remember those ugly old shoes, lol. I moved around a lot as a kid. I went to different schools. Every girl/guy here that has moved around a lot knows that age old adage you can be popular in one school and not the other.
This one school I went too those ugly old shoes were it. My parents bought me a pair. Lasted one day. They were so uncomfortable. To say the least I was not very popular. I moved away to a different school in a different town. Our school would hold state tourneys that several area schools would attend. The girls from my old school would come in wearing those shoes. The girls at my new school were like "Why are they all wearing those ugly shoes!" ROFL! I will never forget that. I was popular in that school.
Do some of you remember the shoelaces that had designs on them like stars, hearts, etc? The girls would wear those shoe laces in the ugly shoes.

Stickers- I love stickers. One of my girlfriends keeps pressuring me to do YouTube videos on sticker hauls. I saw my husband eyeing a video camera the other day. I feel so ganged up on everyone thinks it will help with my shyness making You Tube videos. I am in my early forties. I don't think anything is going to help me being shy at this point in my life, lol.
I have more stickers than rubber stamps. I am crazy about stickers. I hardly stamp in my scrapbooks but I love stickers in my scrapbooks. No, I don't have snicker sneeze.

I'm one of those people who doesn't like to get rid of things. After all I thought they were worth spending money on, so I must be able to find a use for them.
Some things I use because I like them, I don't care of they are considered trendy.
But I think like most things when a new trend comes out it tends to be overdone. IE eyelets are nice but do we really need 50 different colours and 100 different shapes (Same for vellum- why did we think we needed 30 different colours?). It was over done (and yes I bough too many).
But using a few eyelets on a masculine themed card, or using an eyelet for the hole in a tag is perfectly expectable.
And I think some of the items listed may be "out" as far as being used the way they were originally intended. Instead they are being "re-invented". IE embossing templates used with modeling paste or mulberry paper for tear bears.
In/out. I don't get this. Don't use it if you don't want to, or if doesn't suit your style, but why shouldn't anyone else?
I use lots of stuff on that list. And have seen cards using other things on it (like paper clips) that I thought looked great.
Besides, everything old becomes new again. Someone is going to come up with a really cool new way of using eyelets and then everyone will want to use them.
Think I'll go buy a crimper. I've been eyeing one. ;-)!

Is that the contraption that you slide a marker into? I have one from SU, and only used it once! I may still use it!
I realized from this thread that my stamps/supplies have to be REALLY dead and gone before I let pry my grip off of them!
I find many times a stamp I haven't used in a long, long time or is even in the sale box is needed for a specific card or craft! It's then pulled out of retirement and placed back in an honored position in my stamp armoire!

3D flowers are flowers whether they are Prima or punched. I always altered my Primas anyway. And I have seen Magic Mesh used in the last couple of weeks on Youtube for cards and mixed media. Guess it all depends on where people are looking.
3D flowers are definitely making a comeback in paper! Which is great because I always hated those "silk" flowers you had to put together. They would always fray. Paper flowers look good no matter how badly you damage the paper!
SU has the spiral flower die for your to roll around a toothpick.
Spellbinders has a bunch of new flower dies for you to build like, Daffodil, Dogwood, my favorite is the Iris. However, I have been myopic since 1st grade and as I've aged I've developed Astigmatism. So putting these little pieces together for flowers like the Dogwood whose largest piece is 3/4" and the smallest is 1/4" is a bit much for my eyes!
Sizzix has a whole line of 3D flower dies from Susan Tierney-Cockburn, her tutorials make the flowers look so real...at a glance anyway.
MacGill has a line of flower punches to make 3D flowers with but if you have any of the old MacGill punches like the Birch Leaf, Medium Pear, Small Pear and Alpine Snowflake, you have the same punches being sold as the Garden Rose Flower Punch. All of the petals are made from the pears and the bottom that holds it all together is the Alpine Snowflake.
At least, that is how it was explained to me.
You'll need a 8mm ball stylus to ball and cup the petals and a small ball stylus to make veins on the leaves.
I have used the spiral flower dies and Tim Holtz's pine cone die, but they are so hard to mail. Everyone I send cards to are out of state and I love making cads with the pine cone die which means I buy a lot of padded envelopes!
You can make cabbage roses from Tim's strip die called tattered flowers. You can also make a lit wine or wreath from Tattered flowers too. I have Black and silver (aluminum tape) flowers with tiny purple lights decorating my
window for Halloween.
So, 3D flowers do not seem to be going anywhere for awhile!

I am proud to say I own/owned all this at one point...lol! - Well, except the webbing spray...not sure if this was said, but remember Micro-beads? I still have so many of those, but never see them anymore. Went well with the slides - which I still have several boxes of...lol!
And I use Background stamps, Vellum and Glossy Paper still like it's going out of style...lol!

Anyone remember "bubbles"? They were all the rage for a while, as ready-made and do it yourself embellishments. Just pop the soft plastic bubble sticky side down on top of pattern paper and boom, color-coordinated embellishment. I just dragged mine out that I got at Joann at least five years ago, and they were starting to yellow and the edges were curling up :-| Repeat after me: we must not hoard our stash, we must not hoard our stash�
Remember when everything in the SU catalog had a button on it? Or machine stitching? I remember when everything had a ribbon bow, brad or eyelet on it! Now it is fishtail banners, baker's twine and chevrons but that seems to be waning.
My nonfunctioning decorative scissors were donated to a neighbor long ago, and my rub ons are starting to lose their sticky (see my comment above) so probably need to be trashed. Remember when precut chipboard embellishments and alphas were all the rage, before personal die cutting machines? Yeah, I've got sheets and sheets of those!
I still love my background stamps, and border punches, and was just thinking about putting some eyelets on a mixed media journal page as I saw someone do on YouTube. Those microbeads that I bought at Big Lots about 8 years ago are going into some modeling paste that I'm about to buy for sure! I still have a few spools of SU stitched ribbon which I love, and never goes out of style imo.
I think mixed media is giving new life to lots of bits and pieces in my stash. They can be half-usable and altered and still look pretty cool. My rub on technique always looked like that anyway � could never get the hang of those things! LOL
I have a bout a billion buttons, but I'm gonna keep them, sooner or later they will come back in and I'll be ahead of the wave....my story anyhow....I have a ton of eyelets and brads also....
Mixed Media has put a lot of things to use that I haven't used in a long time. Micro beads, tiles/bubbles, eyelet have been used lately. The one thing that I won't use are stickers - they are all gone to goodwill or schools. I do paint over the chipboard stickers with gesso and then recolor.
I read that if you when you have a rub-on that doesn't work anymore you can use your heat gun to soften it back-up. I haven't tried it yet.
I'm more selective about what I buy so I never got into twine, chevron, banners or washi tape. I think washi will be out soon. In fact I rarely buy embellishments any more as I have plenty to use up.

I was just thinking about buttons a few days ago! I also have tons! They faded from my radar without a notice! I used to put a button on almost every card. I just got a tale end SAB freebie...yep, the button/ribbon combo. I thought, will I even use these buttons?
I'll keep all of them though!

What a fun thread to read. I am certainly glad that the people I gift my cards to aren't card makers who might realize I used something that a isn't "in" haha.
Zombies rule my craft room. Nothing dies in there. Mulberry paper scraps live on and on and on with brads, eyelets, foam stamps, and self adhesive ribbon.
LOL Just read through the more recent comments on this thread (I have read it since it started) and wasn't going to comment and the next thread I went to was about stitched dies starting to get old and I didn't even know what they were talking about :P I looked them up, cute I guess. but yea, I am clearly out of the loop and I am ok with that. I lost my craft budget nearly completely a few years ago so I have had to make due. One thing I have noticed a lot of recently tho - sequins on cards. I don't like them - looks unfinished to me. love sequins and beads on felted Christmas things but not cards. To each her own right?! But I suppose if you are trying to build a following you have to stay on trend.

Thanks also for the link! I see why it's called that now...It's a pretty name. I also googled it, and found lots of different colors and looks...and they looked pretty on my screen, not sure if they are in real life but I'm kinda loving paper, so may have to look for some one day just to find out for myself. ;)
I've been doing cards for almost 2 years now. I now have a whole craft (thanks to an amazing hubby) and TONS of stuff. When I first started I was buying tons of stickers and chip board pieces because I didn't think I would be into stamping and coloring so much (I didn't think I'd be that great at it). Though I'm still working on my coloring I am getting better.
I hope to go through my drawers this weekend and sort out some of those earlier purchase and put in a craft box for the nieces/ nephews. I do seem to have a ton of sticker letters and I'm not sure what to do with. I did use some the other day because I made a dark envelope and used the stickers to spell out the nephew's name serial killer style but eventually I'm going to use all the letters that spell their names....what do you do with all the extra sticker letters??
I'd also add the jagged/ patterned scissors I bough (luckily on clearance) when I first started I don't really use them, but the nieces/ nephews tend to use them when they come over to make a card. I also have a lot brads that I need to use more.

LOL... Just got caught up on reading this thread... You all know you can still use your metal stencils by running them through your Big Shot??? I use mine from time to time that way.... I don't care for all the embossing paste look.... that is so popular with Mixed Media... and speaking of the graveyard...lol I won't even go into all the Tole Painting, Metal Stamping, Glass Fusing, Stained Glass, Mosaic, FABRIC, different kinds of Art Paper and Paper Mache stuff... that is around because I make stuff with it..... and my home doesn't look like I'm a hoarder... well, at least I don't think so...lol Why even when a friend mentioned that she was looking for a 45 rpm record adapter (Yes, I even have some of my old 45's) because she was going to get a tattoo of one and she wanted it the right shape and size to show the Artist.... and who had a handful and knew right where to look for them..... (as my 30 year old daughter would say) "Of Course you do Mama...." That's my story and I'm sticking to it... I LOVE Stuff....
