I had a question about stamping on fabric! I recently got into stamping onesies for baby gifts. I did my first trial run a few days ago and it worked out pretty well. However, I didn't wash the onesie first. I stamped the onesie with Stazon inks and heat set with my heat gun. Then I ran them on gentle cycle in the wash to make sure the ink would stay. The ink stayed pretty well, but looks like it faded a bit.
I was reading the back of the stazon pads and noticed that it says, "Not recommended for fabric". I was confused because I have read severel tutorials on stamping onesies and some of them have used stazon inks.
So has anyone ever stamped on fabric with stazon and do you have any advice for me. I already have 6 different stazon ink pads and would hate to have to buy a different kind if I can avoid it!
Some please help me!!
I've used staz on on denim and it stayed really well. I think you may have run into issues because you didn't prewash the onsie. There is a residue on most fabrics (sizing) that should be washed out before painting or stamping on it. Also do NOT use fabric softener on the item before stamping on it. using it after is fine, just not before stamping.
I was going to recommend washing before stamping. I used Staz-On on some knit bags and the ink seemed to do well after washing, but I had washed the bags prior to stamping. I agree with hawk, most manufacturers use some sort of sizing and that can interfere with the way the ink adheres to the fabric.

Definitely use Palette inks. That's all I use when stamping on fabric and I never have a problem with fading. Be sure to NOT use fabric softener when washing the first time, though.
Stazon isn't recommended for fabric because the solvency of the ink eats at the fabric. Make sure you wash whatever fabric you are using first....to get rid of that manufacturers sizing (coating) and then use a fabric ink like Versacraft (it is my favorite!)

It's also not really meant for use on porous surfaces, which is why you can't get a nice, vibrant white on paper with the Opaque StazOn.
Good luck with attempt #2 on the stamped onesies! I think those are always so adorable!

I did a test once, I stamped on fabrics, then laundered. I stamped with StazOn, SU Classic and SU Craft. The ony one with any staying power was the SU Craft. I always hear great things about stamping on fabric with Pallette inks, too.
I'm with Sherrie - Versacraft is my first choice for fabric stamping, just iron to make it permanent and it goes through laundry fabulously! You can buy it in small cubes as well as full size pads so it doesn't have to be ferociously expensive either. It also works on wood, paper, papier mache etc. They also make markers in most of the colours - not tried those yet.
I asked Tsukineko about the "not recommended for fabric" thing on Stazon and it is about the potential for the solvent in the ink to decay the fibres of the fabric. They used the word "eventually" so for something that will only be around as long as a onesie it may not be a biggie but if you're stamping anything that you want to stick around for any length of time then avoid Stazon.
I'm getting ready to try stamping on onesies and would like to use the Versacraft ink pads that a lot of you recommended. Where is a good place to buy them? Do you get them online or a local stamp store? I didn't really see much online for it. Thanks!
i too love to stamp on fabric and did many tests beforehand - the clear winner was versacraft ink pads and fabrico markers. i do not usually carry them in my store but have done several special orders when i get a request - the small cubes are a great option so you keep your costs down. if anyone is interested please let me know with a pm. if there is enough interest i can put an order in.
Sorry Kathy - I'm in the UK so not much use to you to know where mine came from. I have seen them on eBay though if you don't mind shopping there and Cerridwen doesn't get enough interest to do a special order.
I've used Stampin' Up's craft ink and it worked fine but I find the easiest way is to make a t-shirt transfer and iron an image on. You just can't use it for words because it mirrors the image.
1. Stamp with Versamark or Craft Ink on computer paper.
2. Emboss with black embossing powder
3. Colour in with good quality crayons (like Crayola)
4. Iron on with a dry Iron.
I wouldn't dry it on High heat but it washes well and mine hasn't fadded yet
Thanks for the responses...I'm going to wait and see if Cerridwen has enough interest to place an order for them. In the meantime, I might try the t-shirt transfer technique. You are all so talented and willing to help others here. Thank you so much for that! Kathy
my blog post today features some fabric stamping i did over the weekend for a neighbor....used versacraft and fabrico but i used a waffle weave type towel which is not the best i think......
