I like to browse the B/S/T forums, in search of a deal, or something I can't find anywhere else, but I have a real problem when someone is listing SU sets. For those of us who don't buy SU (proceed throwing eggs now);-) this is really hard because I don't know wht the sets look like. I don't know anyone who has older catalogs, so I can't find out what the sets are like. Occasionally, if I have heard on the forums about a particular retired set and the curiousity is just killing me, I'll find them for sale on eBay, but this is not very often. I dont' want to have to asked the OP to send me a scan of each set, so I guess what I'm wondering is is there a resource (preferrably online)that allows me to see what these retired sets look like?
Have you tried looking in the gallery? I think most of the sets have a stamped image page in the beginning ot it's gallery. Example, if you are looking for "IN Full Bloom", go to the Gallery, click on G-J Sets, scroll down until you see "In Full Bloom", click it & the very first pic you see is the image of all the stamps to that set. Hope this helps!

You can get a pretty good idea of some of the stamps included in each set by searching in the gallery. The gallery is broken up by SU stamp sets. Look under the appropriate alphabet letter that the stamp set name is, and the for the particular set.
The very best source is the Splitcoast gallery! It was having a couple of tough days, but seems fine now. The alphabetical listings are for SU set names. When I first started, I even went there and looked all through the galleries for ideas of what older sets I would like. If that fails, I do check ebay in case there's one out there. And if I can't find it in either place, the person selling usually realizes it is rare and will email you a photo or a link if you ask. Sometimes I've been able to google the set, e.g., "stampin' up counting sheep," and you might get a blog or a personal website or sales listing somewhere else that shows a picture.
Good luck to you - it is hard at first if you aren't familiar with the names, but browsing the gallery when you get a chance is really helpful. Anyone I've ever asked for a photo has always obliged, too.
Also, since you use stamps from other companies, did you know you can do a search in the gallery - for example, MFT (for My Favorite Things) and as long as the person put that in the 'keywords' field when they uploaded, that search will bring up cards/projects made with their stamps. I love that we can do this .
Happy Stamping!!
I'm always searching the selling forum, just write down the stamps sets that you want to check, and 99% should be alphabetical in the gallery, for CTMH, I have to try a "google search"

Just one more thing!! If you go to a particular set in the gallery and you don't see an 'index' right away (a page with a stamped image of all of the stamps in the set), you can search from there for 'index' and usually it will find one ~ sometimes, there isn't one to find....
One thing I also do is if there is a set that isn't in the Gallery, I look on ebay for a picture -- usually there will be at least one for sale. If there isn't, you can also try searching completed auctions (if you have an ebay account).
I agree with hquinzelle. Even though I have old cattys (1997 and on) it is quicker to refer to ebay. It seems I can most often find wht I am looking for listed there, complete with a picture.
Just a quick note about looking up sets on ebay... this has happened to me about a half dozen times, so not as rare as you might think.
Apparently, there is some sort of automated naming method that sellers can use, and I have seen sets that are given the wrong name! If it's listed more than once, the oddball will obviously stick out to you.... but if there is only one, if the name and picture don't seem to make sense together, it's worth checking out elsewhere.
Whenever I've seen this I've sent a message to the seller so they can correct it.
I ordered a spread sheet from e-bay that list what stamps, when they were out and how much the sold for . As for the photo look at completed sells if the gallery does not work,
